Hallowe'en portal

The entrance portal to the event.

The 2010 Hallowe'en event, also called Partying is Such Sweet Sorrow, was released on 18 October 2010 and features a bone brooch, and the Puppet Master emote for the reward. The event can be started by talking to Pumpkin Pete, who is located north-west of Port Sarim or by entering the portal (it will automatically let you talk with Pumpkin Pete).

Walkthrough

Note: An explorer's ring 3 or 4 can teleport you to a location near the start point of the quest.

Talk to Pumpkin Pete near the portal to start the quest, then enter the portal. When you talk to him inside, he will tell you to talk to people around the house to help prepare for the party. You can do the various parts in any order.

Moonshine

File:Moonshine ingredients.png

Items required to make moonshine.

  • Talk to the werewolves, Helga, Greta, and Moira, in the north-west corner of the ground floor.
They tell you that they are the backup singers for the band Adamantite Damsel and that they need a special drink called moonshine to help their singing voices.
They tell you that moonshine must be made fresh and suggest that you make it for them.
However, none of them can remember the whole recipe, so they ask you to gather ingredients and then each of them may be able to remember a bit of a recipe. Anything that Helga tells you will certainly be wrong as her memory is not as good.
  • Search the table just south of them to get the ingredients.
  1. Moira remembers that the leaves are used to strain the other liquid ingredients.
  2. Helga remembers that the blood is never first, but she is always wrong, so the blood is first.
  3. Greta remembers that the ground bone is last.

Making the moonshine (must be done in this order):

  1. Use pile of evil leaves on empty moonshine vial
  2. Use big bottle of blood on the strained moonshine vial
  3. Use big bottle of fear on the unfinished moonshine
  4. Use pile of ground bones on the unfinished moonshine to make moonshine

Note: Making a mistake in mixing the drink causes the player to start over.

  • Go back to the werewolves to complete this task.

Autograph

  • First talk to Grim Reaper, who is upstairs, to the east.
He will explain that he is very anxious because his favourite musician, Zabeth Corvid, is present at the party downstairs and indirectly hint the player about his inability to talk to Zabeth as he is too shy.
The player will offer to get Zabeth's autograph for Grim, but Grim will warn the player that because Zabeth was heavily drunk when he died, he accidentally stumbled a few seconds into the future, which can make conversations with him difficult.
  • Head downstairs, to the south-eastern room, where you will find Zabeth.
Because he is a few seconds into the future, what he says will not seem to make sense, but the player must choose the option that makes sense for Zabeth to have responded to it in the way he did.

Choose the following options:

  1. Hello, enjoying the party?
  2. So, what do people call you?
  3. Sheesh, you're an idiot.
  4. Sorry, how about I make it up to you with another drink?
  5. Exactly how drunk are you?
  6. A vampire and a werewolf walk into a bar...
  7. Do you know Grim?
  8. Can I get a million XP? (optional)
  9. Can I get an autograph for Grim?
  • Zabeth will agree, and give you his autograph.
  • Bring this back to Grim, and he will thank you and hang the autograph in his room.

Spiders

Halloweenspidermap

Map of spider locations.

  • Talk to Minstrel Web, the giant spider in the big room just after the portal room.
The player is told to look for eight spiders, which are hiding around the house.
They assist with the lighting on the dance floor.

If you have Eek the Spider in your inventory, your conversations with Minstrel Web will be a little more humorous and interesting, as Eek chimes into the conversation.

Finding the spiders

The spiders are hidden around the house. Two are on the ground floor. Six are upstairs.

Downstairs:

  • Purple: In the room downstairs with Pumpkin Pete, search the 2 cabinets.
There will be a spider in one of them.
  • Orange: Standing on the east side of the first floor in the middle of the house.

Upstairs:

  • Turquoise: Located in the southern room of the second floor of the house. Talk to him first. With Eek the spider in your inventory, your conversation will be a bit different, similar to when you talk to Mintral Web with Eek. After a short conversation, you need to scare the spider off. Right-click to scare it. If you have unlocked the Trick emote, you can use it instead.
  • Pink: Wandering around upstairs.
  • Beige: Wandering around upstairs, on the north side of the house.
  • Blue: There is a spider under the bed in the centre room upstairs.
  • Red: There is a spider in the death clock south of the bed in the middle of the room upstairs.
  • Green: North of the centre room on upper floor there is a room with a towel rack.
Search the towels in the east.

Dance floor puzzle

Every spider can be thought of as having two states: "binary" spiders in a sense. They can either be "off" the correct tile, or "on" it. Choosing to move a spider may change the state of either one or two spiders, not necessarily the chosen one, as follows.

List of spider movements:

Which to click Which is moved
Blue Beige, red
Pink Pink, orange
Orange Turquoise
Purple Purple, pink
Red Orange
Turquoise Red, beige
Beige Green, purple
Green Green, blue

The quickest way is to talk to Allan (the raven next to Minstrel Web) and ask him to reset, if you have moved any of the spiders, then click on the following colours:

  • Blue
  • Green
  • Red
  • Purple
  • Orange

Note: This is only one of many ways to solve the puzzle. Shown here is an example of the fastest (5-move) solution.

  • Talk to Minstrel Web again once all the spiders are on their correct spots to complete this task.

Finishing up

  • Speak to Pumpkin Pete once you've completed all the tasks to finish the quest. Congratulations, quest complete!
  • You can stick around at the party and talk to the various characters after you have completed the quest.

Trivia

Halloween 2010 poll

Poll results

  • When you say "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", it is a reference to a song made famous by the band Poison.
  • This is the second time Werewolves have been seen in free-to-play, the first being Shanty Claws.
  • After giving the Autograph to Grim, he says something about where to hang it in the room. He mentions hanging it over the fireplace, yet there is no fireplace in the room.
  • The other rewards that could have been chosen in the 2010 Halloween Reward poll were:
    • Pumpkin Seeds - "If you think any patch of ground can be greatly improved by the presence of decorative pumpkins, these quick-grow Pumpkin Seeds will be for you. Plant and watch the instant results!"
    • Skeletal Puppy - "Give the dog a bone? Well, not if the dog is made out of them! This skeletal scallywag [sic] could be your new best friend - a bony new pet to play with!"
    • Squeak - "The little-known best buddy of Eek the Spider, Squeak is the bat everyone wants to have in their belfry! Cheeky and squeaky, he'll hang around and make you smile."
    • Mummy Costume - "Not your average cheap knock-off costume made of toilet paper - this is a 100% genuine, highest-quality set of mummy garments. You'll certainly feel like the daddy in these. Erm, so to speak."
  • In addition, a Halloween-themed event will be hosted by player and forum moderators, called A New Mystery.
  • "Partying is such sweet sorrow" is a pun on the line "parting is such sweet sorrow" as said by Juliet in the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene.
  • The event includes various references to real life heavy metal bands:
    • Adamantite Damsel is a reference to the band Iron Maiden.
    • The music track reads "Black Zabeth LIVE!" when a player is inside the Dark Portal compared to just "Black Zabeth" outside of the Dark Portal.
    • The Puppet Master emote is most likely a reference to the Metallica song and album, Master of Puppets.
      • The Puppet Master emote could be related to the horror movie "Puppet Master"
    • "Black Zabeth" is a play on the band 'Black Sabbath'.
    • Zabeth Corvid is most likely a referance to Ozzy Osbourne as he says things like Eat the Bat and 'I am the dark master of music' as opposed to Ozzy Osbourne's Prince of Darkness.
    • The stage decoration behind the performers might be a reference to the deathbat logo by Avenged Sevenfold or possibly the popular thrash metal band, Overkill, who've used a similar logo well before Avenged Sevenfold.
  • If choosing the option with a million XP, Zabeth will state that it is not funny. He will reply AFTER you ask, showing that the conversation isn't predetermined, and when your character asks about it, he will pretend to not hear you.
  • The ravens Edgar and Allen are a reference to Edgar Allen Poe's poem The Raven, and his examine info is a play on the word "pwn", being "Poe-n".
  • After you get the autograph from Zabeth Corvid he says "give my best to grim. Tell him every rose has a thorn." Which is a reference to a scene from "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" a movie where two rockers are killed and win a game against the grim reaper who then has to do as they wish, he later ends up quoting the Poison song 'Every Rose has a Thorn' at the gates of heaven. Asking Grim about this during the party receives the reply, "It was a long time ago in a dimension far, far away. It certainly wasn't an excellent adventure."This is a refrence to the Star Wars movies which start with "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away......" The second part, "It certainly wasn't an excellent adventure," is a reference to "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure."
  • If you wear the Jack Lantern Mask from 2006 Halloween Event, Pumpkin Pete will start every conversation stating how "fabulous" you look.
  • When the Grim Reaper tells you the story about the 'every rose has a thorn' sentence, which is a reference to a song by Poison, he says it was 'a long time ago, in a dimension far, far away'. This could be a reference to the line of Star Wars: 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away'.
  • The dancers at the end of the event wear the reward costumes from the 2008 (Warlock/Witch sets) and 2006 (Skeleton Set) Hallowe'en events.
  • When talking to Zabeth Corvid, he says he is a "space kebbit". This is reference to the saying "space cadet".
  • The "Death Clock" in the banquet hall is a reference to the predictors of when you die, found on several internet sites or the Heavy Metal band "Dethklok."
  • At the end of the event, you unlock the music "Black Zabeth" as stated in the chat box, but in the music list it says "Black Zabeth LIVE" while listening to it during the party.
  • Having Eek in your inventory makes your conversations with Minstrel Web and Pumpkin Pete a little more appealing.
  • Moira has a grammatical error in one of her dialogues. She says "See if you can some ingredients and then ask each of us if you can see and work out the full recipe" instead of "See if you can find some ingredients and then ask each of us if you can see and work out the full recipe".
  • If you have the fog setting on, it will be a bit foggier around the portal to the event than many other places.
  • When scaring the beige spider, the player will perform an evil laugh when talking.
  • The Grim says in conversation, "'Rock' is a style of music. It's is popular in certain other planes of existence." Simply "It's" or "It is" was intended.
  • The dancer at the very north of the dance floor wearing the warlock outfit can be seen performing the Air Guitar emote but without the music notes occasionally.
  • The examine text for the stage is "Made from the heaviest of metals and a pinch of rock."
  • On the event's Game Guide page the titles are a referance to the song Blame It on the Boogie, by The Jackson 5.
  • Before you talk to Pumpkin Pete, and you talk to one of the werewolves, she will say, "I'm a dragon longsword, short and stout. Here's my handle, I'll poke your eye out." This is a reference to the nursery rhyme I'm A Little Teapot.
  • Each coloured tile has its own image relating to Halloween:
Red- A scared cat
Blue- Jack 'o' lantern smile
White- A wolf's head (perhaps because of the dancers.)
Green- Two flying bats
Pink- A flying witch
Purple- Jack 'o' lantern smile
Orange- Skeleton Head
Turqoise- A ghoul with its tongue out (somewhat depicting Zabeth)
  • If you die during the Halloween event, Death will show up by you and tell you "There is no escape!" or "I have come for you, <player name>."
    • If you examine "Death" it will read Do not fear the reaper, referencing the Song (Don't Fear) The Reaper by The Blue Öyster Cult.
  • There are two ravens in the house named Edgar and Allan, referencing the famous writer Edgar Allan Poe. One raven references the story "The Raven" when trying to scare the spider.
  • Although it may be a coincidence, when the Grim Reaper says 'show me your teeth!', this may be a reference to "Utopia", a Doctor Who episode.
  • Pumkin Pete makes a reference to The Simpsons when he says You may remember me from such scary films as...
