Abyssal demons are located at the top of the Slayer Tower in Morytania, in Kuradal's Dungeon, and in the depths of the dark Abyssal Area (which is not the Abyss location used in Runecrafting) accessible through fairy rings with code A-L-R. Only players with level 85 Slayer can fight these demons and obtain their drops. Abyssal demons share similar, although slightly better, drops with black demons.

Abyssal demons are the ultimate goal of many slayers, because of the rare and valuable Abyssal whips they drop. The whip is regarded by many as one of the best weapons in RuneScape, so it is always in demand and sells well on the Grand Exchange. Slaying abyssal demons can therefore be very profitable. They are often slayed, rather than dark beasts, because the Dark bow the dark beasts drop is currently worth much less than the Abyssal whip. Dark beasts also have a higher Slayer level requirement, you need to start Mourning's End II and are more difficult to kill, making it not worth the effort money-wise.

High levelled players may find it easy to stay for long periods of time, using a healing weapon such as a Saradomin godsword (or Enhanced excalibur), a healing familiar (e.g. bunyip), or a combination of the two, or Guthans. Prayers such as Soul Split can also be utilised to extend life points. These methods, along with an occasional lobster drop, can sustain most players for hours. In addition, if you have naturally trained slayer to this point and have 68 Summoning, you will usually find that a bunyip's healing effect will keep you at or near full hp for the duration of the bunyip. Because of this, it might be good to bring just one or two bunyip pouches and a summoning potion, as well as High Level Alchemy Spells if you feel the need to alch mithril kiteshields, rune med helms, rune chainbodies etc. and if you have one, a gem pouch. Abyssal demons may also drop lobsters to help you if your life points drop low. Otherwise, the lobster drops can be used to prolong your stay after all of your bunyips disappear.

If players bring an Abyssal head to the Taxidermist in Canifis, she will remark "It's still glowing" and that the effect is preservable with magic, despite that neither the living nor stuffed versions of the abyssal demon glow.

Abyssal demons seem to fade and shrink slightly when they are hit.

Abyssal demons and cave horrors were the only Slayer monsters that did not receive a graphical update on or around the time the Smoking Kills quest was released in 2008.

Strengths and weaknesses

As the Abyssal demon is indeed a demon, it is affected by the powers of Silverlight and Darklight. Abyssal demons have a max hit of around 82 life points, which is quite low considering their level. This makes them very good targets when using Guthan's or Dharok's sets because of the low risk of dying. However, if using Dharok's set, players should consider activating Protect from Melee.

Abyssal demons have the unusual ability of teleporting around the room while also teleporting the player at the same time. While the player always ends up in one of the eight spaces next to the abyssal demon, it is possible that the ending position will prevent ordinary melee combat. For example, if the demon teleports east of a terrain feature and the player south of it, melee combat is not possible (except if the player has a long weapon like a Halberd). If auto-retaliate is turned off, the player will have to click or right-click to resume attacking. (Shifters, the Chaos Elemental and Imps are the only other monsters that teleport during battle, but only the Chaos Elemental actually teleports the player. Nomad, the boss from Nomad's Requiem, also teleports himself and the player.) The demons are also very weak to magic!
