Amascut, "The Devourer", is the goddess of destruction and one of the four major desert gods. She is the sister of Icthlarin and daughter of Tumeken and Elidinis. She is the main antagonist in the desert quest series, and an enemy of Icthlarin. You can talk to Neite in Sophanem to hear Amascut's story.

She has the ability to hypnotise people to do her will, as seen in Icthlarin's Little Helper and Diamond in the Rough, and can also change her physical appearance to some extent, as she looks different in the guises of the Wanderer, Lady Keli, and Sumona (although, she tends to keep the appearance of a tan-skinned woman with orange/ginger hair and red eyes, so her shapeshifting powers may be limited, or she prefers that appearance).

If you pray at Amascut's statue in the Pharaoh Queen's tomb in Uzer Mastaba, your prayer will be boosted by one point, but you will lose several life points.

History

Amascut was born to Tumeken and the river-goddess, Elidinis. At one point she was considered the goddess of rebirth. She became somewhat disturbed by witnessing her sibling Icthlarin bringing the Mahjarrat to Gielinor who brought great destruction. She vowed vengeance upon her brother and "she brought obliteration, both physical and spiritual". It was after this warping of her mind when she became known and feared as The Devourer. When Tumeken departed on his journey he marked Icthlarin to rule in his stead, which further angered Amascut. Her original form was that of a lioness headed woman. When her followers rose against her, she cursed them by turning them into cats. They retained some of their former powers, and Icthlarin granted them immortality, making Amascut ironically deathly afraid of cats.

Quests

Stolen Hearts

Lady Keli

Amascut disguised as Lady Keli.

In the quest, Stolen Hearts, Amascut, disguised as Lady Keli, enlists the help of Khnum and his gang the 'Skulls' in the kidnapping of Prince Ali. She is confronted by the player, Ozan, and Leela on the coastline south-east of Draynor, only to make her getaway with Prince Ali by brainwashing the mercenaries of the Skulls and having them attack the player and his/her companions as a distraction.

Diamond in the Rough

The player (and Ozan) attempt to track down Prince Ali (with Leela at some point) only to find out that Lady Keli was Amascut in disguise. She reveals her idenity and escapes via sandstorm, leaving her guards, Heru and Apep, to deal with the player and his/her companions. She obtained the Kharid-ib in the process, but nonetheless, the prince was freed. It was known that she and Jabari were responsible for the emir's death.

Icthlarin's Little Helper

Amascut disguised as the Wanderer in Icthlarin's Little Helper

In the quest Icthlarin's Little Helper, Amascut disguised as the Wanderer. She wants to capture the soul of Klenter, a dead high-priest, before Icthlarin can. She uses the player by hypnotising them and forcing them into stealing a Canopic jar from the pyramid. However, the player for some reason awakens in the streets of Sophanem with the jar, and after touching the door of the nearby pyramid has a flashback where they see themselves traversing the pyramid's traps. After talking with the Sphinx and the High Priest, they decide to enter the pyramid (with the help of their cat) to return the jar to its place. There, they have another flashback where they defeat the jar's guardian and take the jar away. It is there that they realise that they weren't controlling their actions and return it. The player, however, had unknowingly planted one of Amascut's unholy symbolsin one of the sarcophagi while under her control so she could teleport straight inside the temple whenever she wanted. The player remembers this deed in yet another flashback and goes to warn the priests who are currently in the pyramid. As soon as the player arrives to foil her plots, she possesses one of the priests and has them try to kill the player. But this fails, after which she goes back to hiding. It is then revealed (in another flashback) that her spell was seemingly lifted from the player by her brother Icthlarin, before the player awoke in Sophanem.

Smoking Kills

In Smoking Kills, she disguises herself as a citizen of Pollnivneach, Sumona. She requests the player go down the Pollnivneach well into the Desert Slayer Dungeon, to save her non-existent "twin sister", Jesmona, in an attempt on the player's life.

Contact! and Dealing with Scabaras

She also manipulated Scabaras' followers into attacking Sophanem, but was thwarted by the player. However, Senliten mentions that in simply convincing the Scabarites to attack, Amascut caused them to go against the principle of isolation, which Scabaras holds above all others.

Do No Evil

Likewise, in Do No Evil, it is revealed that she both stole Apmeken's sight, voice, hearing, and killed almost all of Apmeken's followers (the only known survivors are the Three Wise Monkeys of Ape Atoll.)

Trivia

  • Until the release of The Chosen Commander, she was the only deity that players had direct interaction with, apart from Icthlarin. She was also the first deity encountered in game.
  • The symbol of Amascut is an upside down Icthlarin symbol, an ankh (☥). The ankh is a symbol of life, therefore Amascut's inverted ankh shows she is Icthlarin's opposite and his sister.
  • Another thing to keep in mind is that ankhs, (☥), were held by ancient Egyptian gods. This is also a reference that she despises gods of peace (Such as Apmeken).
  • Her name may be a reference to Ammit the Devourer, a god in ancient Egypt who was said to devour the hearts of evil souls.
