Ankou are undead monsters found on the fourth level of the Stronghold of Security and in the Wilderness Volcano. They are described by Vannaka, a Slayer Master, as "neither skeleton nor ghost, but both." All varieties of Ankou have a maximum hit of 89. The highest-level Ankous are one of the strongest monsters open to non-members, surpassed only by greater demons, hellhounds and certain revenants. This monster is a very popular monster to train in members worlds because of its decent blood rune and death rune drops and their weakness against melee attacks and the Salve amulet. In free worlds, Ankous are rarely attacked due to their high level, but some players may kill these monsters for their law rune and adamant arrow drops. Members can use this monster for money making; the drops of blood runes, death runes, battlestaves, pure essence, adamant arrows, and level 3 clue scrolls are a good source of money. However, the popularity of Ankous makes it very crowded. Ankous act very similar to attackable human NPCs, and attack by punching (crush-type attack). This makes a chainbody such as rune or dragon preferable to a platebody.

The Ankou is the only monster to drop the left skull half, a component needed to assemble the skull sceptre. There is a safespot to range or mage the level 82 Ankou in the south-west part of the stronghold. This makes it possible for low level players to obtain the sceptre piece.

One strategy is to use Bones to Peaches (tablets, if you don't have the spell) as the Ankous always drop bones. Ankous are highly recommended for players who want to use any strong Ancient Magicks spells or do not want to spend money on runes such as bloods and deaths, as they drop the runes very commonly.

Trivia

• In Breton, the word Ankou means Grim Reaper or Death.
• Although the examine info says, "A bony ghost," they do not count towards a Slayer assignment of ghosts.
• It appears that when an Ankou drops a Left skull half, it'll usually drop a rare seed/item too.
• A Dwarf Multicannon, despite belief, is actually very effective against Ankou in the Stronghold of Security, though it is highly recommended players stand behind one of the Portal of Deaths because it is not a multicombat zone.
• Even though Ankous are moderately high level, with some good food and rune weapons/armour, a medium level player can kill these monsters with little difficulty.
