The bronze wire is a quest item from the Recruitment Drive quest. It is picked up from a bookcase in the Miss Cheevers challenge room. The bronze wire can be used on the tin with a plaster cast of the key to retrieve the bronze key that is used to complete the challenge. Along with the bronze wire, the chisel and knife serve the same purpose.
It appears identical to a normal bronze wire, but cannot be taken out of the room.
