The following table uses live Grand Exchange Market Watch prices to calculate the profit from smithing cannonballs. Although the second option gives a much higher profit, consideration should be given to the extra time taken to first smelt the raw materials. Consideration should also be given to the experience you get from smelting each of them, which is 691.2 exp per inventory. (With an ammo mould and 27 steel bars.) It takes approximately 6 seconds to smith a steel bar into 4 cannonballs. That's 2 minutes 40 seconds for 1 full load of cannonballs, (27 steel bars). A round trip takes 3 minutes and 45 seconds in the Falador furnace using the west bank. If buying steel bars, the profit is per hour, excluding time to walk to the Grand Exchange, but including time to walk to bank and furnace in Falador.

Carrying the raw materials and an ammo mould one could smelt 36 cannonballs per trip. One can easily do 32 of these trips in Al Kharid, resulting in and 12413xp per hour, buying the materials on the Grand Exchange. This can also be done using the coal bag making 68 cannonballs per trip and making 19 trips per hour giving you and 13921 xp (This was done in edgeville furnace with Varrock armour with about 3 mins spare.) However, buying steel bars one could do about 17 trips per hour in Al Kharid, making 108 cannonballs per trip. This results in and 12027xp per hour. Note that the steel bars method is much less intense.
