A Certer underwater.

The Certers are a random event. Miles, Niles, or Giles present a player with a rotating image of an item, and three possible choices of what it is. If a player correctly identifies the item, they may receive coins, food (such as a kebab), gems, a spinach roll, or a half of a crystal key. An incorrect choice will result in the player's weapons and note-able items being noted and the player being teleported to a random location. The certers used to only note items; however, players took advantage of this by dropping any items they wished to remain un-noted and then answering incorrectly, resulting in the certers noting their raw materials and allowing the player to carry more. If you ignore them, they will give you 4 warnings and then teleport you somewhere and note your items.

Trivia

In RuneScape Classic, the Certers were employed in Draynor, converting fish (Niles), ore (Giles), or bars (Miles) into certificates. When the new RuneScape was introduced, the certers were removed from the game and replaced by the bank note system. Jagex released this random event as a reference to their old trade.

An example of a question asked by the certers.

If a player goes underwater the Certer will be with the same gear as the player.

The Future

In Postbag from the Hedge 35 30 October 2008 this is shown: "We are most hopeful that this little piece of bureaucracy will soon be a thing of the past, and we can all go on a well-deserved holiday, or possibly even retire. I'm sure you know how long these small legal issues can take to resolve. In the meantime, if you can lessen your annoyance, we shall speed up this process - quid pro quo, no?"

This suggests that this random event will disappear soon. This is might be the Random eventupdate as announced on the Update:Behind_the_Scenes_-_March_(2008)
