This article covers some strategies for those wishing to fight the Chaos Elemental, a boss monster with a combat level of 305 that spawns in the northern Wilderness.
Equipment
Please note that the Chaos Elemental resides in deep Wilderness. Only bring what you are willing to lose or are able to keep on death.
The Chaos Elemental is easy to kill with far less expensive equipment than is described below unless the player is very low level. For example, royal or black dragonhide armour with a black salamander and harralander tar are cheap but sufficient.
- The Hellfire bow, while risk-free, allows anyone to attack you and will alert other players in the Wilderness of your location if they are carrying a Wilderness sword.
- Only fires Bolt racks.
- Does not require ammo.
- Does not work with LootShare.

Strategy
The Elemental's primary attack can deal damage of all three aspects of the combat triangle. A protection prayer is thus effective only for one of three attacks on average since the attack style is random. As the magic attack is the most accurate, Protect from Magic/Deflect Magic is recommended over the others, but Soul Split and stat-boosting prayers are generally better options.
Because the Chaos Elemental is stun-immune, has a relatively small amount of life points for a boss, and has secondary attacks that interrupt channeled abilities (such as Rapid Fire), Legacy Mode's higher damage output is an appealing option. However, the lack of combat utility can be fatal in encounters with PKers.
A combat familiar, such as a Steel titan, can speed up kills, but a Beast of Burden, such as a Pack yak, provides inventory space for more food or to manage the Elemental's several unnoted drops.
Although the teleporting attack will dispel dreadnips, their damage is still handy to have, and the Elemental is not immune to their poison.
If only a few kills are needed for a Soul Reaper task, risked inventory value can be decreased by decanting potions to only 1 or 2 doses each.
Boosts from the spa facilities at Oo'glog can be useful, as well as the bonfire health buff.
Anticipation, Freedom, and Surge and Bladed Dive, especially with Mobile, can be useful for escaping invading player killers.
The Deserted Keep teleport lever can be used to restock. Edward is to the east in the Demonic Ruins; members may also bank with William, who sometimes travels above the fence.
Wilderness Safety
WARNING! Other players may attack and kill you in the Wilderness, including the area where the Chaos Elemental is found. Be careful not to risk anything you would regret losing!
The area around the Chaos Elemental is a multi-way zone, so players also can be attacked by the nearby wolves or set upon by multiple player killers, possibly cloaked by Camouflage potions.
PKing tactics include skull tricks and prayer drain to disable Protect Item. Therefore, prayer restoration can be useful beyond sustaining combat prayers. Disabling Accept Aid can help by preventing the use of Heal Other with Smite/Soul Split. A Fury shark also can protect an additional item.
Players killed in the Wilderness always respawn in Edgeville. There is a lever to the Deserted Keep south from the spawn point, allowing players to quickly get back to the Elemental if they die. The Wilderness obelisks can also be convenient, especially if the Hard Wilderness Tasks have been completed.
Escaping PKers
In the absence of a Teleport Block, the nearby obelisk can eject pursuers or escort a player to a depth of Wilderness where escape teleportation can be used if the Hard Wilderness Tasks have been completed.
Carrying Jennica's ring enables escape into the Spirit Realm through the portal by the Magic axe hut.
Under a Teleport Block, however, running into the Rogues' Castle and closing the doors may buy enough time to hop worlds or log out. As PKers are unlikely to bring lockpicks, players can also hide in the Magic axe hut, but this is not advised if under attack from the Elemental.
Unequipping Attack
The Chaos Elemental's multi-coloured attack unequips the targeted player's items, starting with their main-hand weapon; the Elemental will not use this attack on a player with a full inventory. Potion flasks thus are not recommended unless quick kills can be achieved.
Leaving one slot open allows just the main-hand weapon to be unequipped and immediately re-equipped. This may be useful because whenever the Elemental uses the disarming attack, it is not using the damaging or teleporting attack, and less overall damage is done.
Some foods leave behind a container when eaten instead of an empty inventory slot e.g.
- Summer pie
- Juju gumbo
- Stew or Curry
- Tuna and corn
- Saradomin brews and Super restores in vials (suboptimal if using combat potions other than Overloads)
- Wine for F2P rangers
Items from sacks of vegetables, baskets of fruit or cheese wheels can be withdrawn to fill inventory space as well as provide a small amount of healing.
The Expensive spices are free to replace and can improve the healing from multiple-bite foods, such as Chocolate cake, as well as the Elemental's common food drops.
A filled runecrafting pouch can be emptied to the same effect, but it is never kept on death. The snow globe can be used to fill the inventory with snowballs that can be destroyed as loot is obtained, but it requires past participation in the 2007 Christmas Event or the 2016 Christmas event and cannot be used in combat.
Teleporting Attack
The Chaos Elemental's red attack teleports the targeted player a short distance away. This can be very disorienting, especially as teammates suddenly run in from afar.
To minimise the effect, right-click the Elemental as the attack flies and attack the Elemental after being teleported. Otherwise, keep auto-retaliate on.
Teamwork
Although it can be easily soloed, the Chaos Elemental can teleport or disarm a single opponent multiple times, so going in a team is advisable. As with other group Wilderness events, a set of team capes can be helpful. Moreover, player killers will have a harder time fighting a group.
If fighting in a team, players should stand opposite one another with the Elemental in between to slow its attacks, as it has to turn to face its target. Unlike other boss monsters, it compensates for being surrounded in this way by teleporting players around. However, it still has to take time to turn and attack or teleport each target. Furthermore, it can attack two players standing beside each other simultaneously.
LootShare or CoinShare can be used; however, any coins picked up will NOT go into the Coin pouch while in the Wilderness.
