A Character is any being in the RuneScape world. Characters fall into two categories: Player characters (commonly referred to as "players"), and Non-player characters (also known as NPCs. NPCs can either be attackable or non-attackable. Most attackable NPCs will attack players if they are a lower or slightly higher combat level than them. If so, the monster is known as "being aggressive". The former variety are commonly reffered to as monsters, while the latter are usually known as NPCs (even though the term can apply to both kinds of characters). Every character that you can attack and can attack you will have a Combat Level. For example, a Lesser Demon, a monster very common for training, especially in F2P worlds, shows a Combat Level (82), while the Wise Old Man does not show a Combat Level, as you cannot attack him.
