Chinchompas are explosive animals that may be caught with the box traps at level 53 Hunter. They can be found at the Piscatoris Hunter area just north-east of Eagles' Peak, and provide 198.5 experience each. When caught, they turn into chinchompas, which are level 45 ranged weapons.

Chinchompas can be attacked and explode when killed. If the attacking player is next to the chinchompa when it explodes, they will be pushed back 1 square and dealt 20 life points of ranged damage (this cannot be mitigated by Prayer). Players hunting these chinchompas should take care, as clicking on one will cause the player to attack it. A player can avoid this entirely by equipping a Ranged or Magic weapon without ammunition, or by selecting the "Hidden" option under the NPC Attack Option Settings Using spicy tomato as bait whilst catching chinchompas increases capture rate by 30%.

Trivia

  • The chinchompa is most likely based on the real-life chinchilla.
  • If you go to the Piscatoris Hunting Area through fairy rings (code AKQ) and back, a chinchompa may come with you into Zanaris. Catching the chinchompa with a box trap is also possible there, just as if you caught it in the hunter area.
  • Attacking a chinchompa without killing it will cause it to retreat. They never retaliate directly.
  • When attempting to analyse or disassemble a chinchompa the following message in red appears in the player's chatbox: "You monster! You can't disassemble a living thing."
