Clay (sometimes called Hard clay to distinguish it from soft clay) is a material that players can obtain with level 1 mining , to gain 5 Mining experience points. Players can mine clay rocks at the Crafting Guild, the Dwarven Mine, the Grand Tree Mine, the Fight Arena mining site, Rimmington, Rellekka, south-west Varrock, south of Barbarian Village, and north-east of Draynor Village.
If a player uses water on clay, soft clay is created. As of 15th February 2011, players no longer need a container for the water, meaning soft clay can be made directly at a water source. This is used to make pottery in Crafting, Urns, furniture in Construction and Magic tablets.
If a bracelet of clay is worn while mining, soft clay is mined instead of clay for 28 uses per bracelet.
It is rare to find a gem in a clay rock; about 1 in 350 rocks mined.

- Clay is the fastest respawning rock as it respawns in just one second.
- Some players find that mining clay is a good way to make money on F2P servers.
- On 15 June 2010, Jagex made it possible to make soft clay from clay, using the Lunar spell Humidify.
- Sometimes clay will appear "Half Done", meaning that if you are a lower level in mining that the clay will appear to drain slightly from the rocks.
- On 15 February 2011, an update allowed clay to be used directly on a water source to turn it into soft clay, instead of using a vessel of water on it. This makes for much faster production, and is necessary for urn-making.
- Strangely, you can make soft clay by using a well. When using vessels other than buckets on wells, you get the message "If I drop my (vessel) down there, I'm not likely to get it back"; normally the same should apply to clay.
