Before the Evolution of Combat update, the combat styles used in the game were a big contrast to the current system. The combat style that a player used in combat were divided into various categories, each giving specific experience in either one skill or shared across many. These styles could be chosen via the combat screen section of the interface.

Pound | Accurate | Crush | Attack | |
Pummel | Aggressive | Crush | Strength | |
Spike | Controlled | Stab | Shared (Attack, Strength, Defence) | |

Melee weapons varied in their attack styles. Most weapons had four options to choose from, as in the example shown above, where each style had a different performing action and was categorised into the following types:
Style | Experience per life point damage | Invisible Boosts |
---|---|---|
Accurate | 0.4 in Attack 0.133 in Constitution |
+3 in Attack |
Aggressive | 0.4 in Strength 0.133 in Constitution |
+3 in Strength |
Defensive | 0.4 in Defence 0.133 in Constitution |
+3 in Defence |
Controlled | 0.133 in Attack 0.133 in Strength 0.133 in Defence 0.133 in Constitution |
+1 in Attack, Strength, Defence |
- The controlled attack style was only available in some melee weapons, such as longswords and maces for all players, and spears and the abyssal whip only for members.
Ranged weapons[]
Combat style | Experience | |
---|---|---|
Accurate | Ranged | |
Rapid | Ranged | |
Longrange | Ranged and Defence |
Ranged weapons also had different attack styles, mainly sorted into three types, namely Accurate, Rapid and Long range.
Style | Experience per life point damage | Boosts |
---|---|---|
Accurate | 0.4 in Ranged 0.133 in Constitution |
Attack accuracy and damage |
Rapid | 0.4 in Ranged 0.133 in Constitution |
+1 to attack speed |
Long range | 0.2 in Ranged 0.2 in Defence 0.133 in Constitution |
Attack range |
- Although the Rapid attack style resulted in faster ranging, it also consumed arrows much faster than the other styles.
- As a player's attack range was increased using the long range style, it was widely used in Clan Wars and Castle Wars, wherein players would stand atop one of the towers and shoot their opponents.
Magic weapons[]
While wielding a Magic weapon (commonly a staff), a player can use the Autocast option, which makes the player automatically attack with a selected spell.
The spells a player can automatically cast are chosen from a list which varies with each spellbook. While a player has the autocast option chosen, they could also choose between two styles to represent how they are casting their magic: defensive or aggressive stance.
Style | Experience |
---|---|
Aggressive | Base spell experience in Magic + 0.2 in Magic per life point damage |
Defensive | Base spell experience in Magic + 0.133 in Magic and 0.1 in Defence per life point damage |
Tribrid Weapons[]
Name | Combat style | Type | Experience | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Scorch | Aggressive | Slash | Strength | |
Flare | Accurate | Ranged | Ranged | |
Blaze | Defensive | Magic | Magic |
Along with weapons giving experience exclusively in melee, magic and ranged, there is a class of weapon which gives experience in a choice of either Strength, Magic and Ranged - Salamanders.
