Construction is an expensive skill to train. At low Construction levels, players typically make their own planks, use clay or limestone, and explore different rooms and furniture. To advance, most players use oak, teak, or mahogany planks to build and remove oak larders, driftwood prawnbrokers, or mahogany tables.

All constructed objects will always result in a loss of money, regardless if you make the planks or buy it off the Grand Exchange.

Typical costs for Construction experience vary from −14.02 (using player-made oak planks) to −9.44 coins per experience point (using mahogany planks bought from the Grand Exchange).

Items and bonuses[]

Due to the cost of training construction, it is recommended to use bonus experience or other experience boosting items, such as the Constructor's outfit, sculpting chisel, and the clan avatar skilling boost. Players should also consider unlocking the scroll of proficiency for a chance to save a plank when using 3 or more. Alongside this, it is recommended that a player trains Construction on a 'Double XP Weekend' in order to save money and train faster.

Sculpting chisel[]

Sculpting chisel (Guthix) detail

A sculpting chisel is obtained as a reward from the Distraction and Diversion God Statues. This can be acquired at level 1 Construction by building a god statue in the same location for a total of four months (non-consecutive). A chisel will grant a +1 boost to the player's Construction level as well as 1% bonus Construction experience, which stacks additively to the bonus from the constructor's outfit.

Constructor's outfit[]

Similar to other skilling outfits, the Constructor's outfit will provide a total 6% bonus when the 5-piece set is donned. The set requires level 44 Construction to wear. However, obtaining the set can be quite time consuming as it is rewarded upon certain milestones in the Temple Trekking and Burgh de Rott Ramble minigame. To unlock these minigames the third quest in the Myreque quest series must be complete. If a player is pursuing the completion of all Morytania achievements, they may consider doing this at level 44 construction.

  • Boots - Get Zachory Bragg to level 25
  • Hat - Get the total NPC level to 200
  • Trousers - Get the total NPC level to 300
  • Garb - Get the total NPC level to 400

Monkey butler[]

Mind-controlled monkey butler chathead

At level 50 Construction it is possible to obtain a Monkey butler. However, this also requires level 60 Invention and unlocking it with goblin currency from the cave goblin technology tree. The monkey butler can carry 26 items, but unlike his other butler counterparts, there is no cost as the player uses a mind-control helmet to domesticate the monkey Steve.

Scroll of proficiency[]

Scroll of proficiency detail

The scroll of proficiency is a Dungeoneering reward, which requires level 60 in both Dungeoneering and Construction. It will also cost 20,000 dungeoneering tokens to obtain. As aforementioned there is a chance to save planks once obtained and is broken down as follows:

  • 50% for normal planks
  • 25% for oak planks
  • 20% for teak planks
  • 10% for mahogany planks
  • 5% for protean planks

For a more detailed analysis please refer to the scroll of proficiency page.

Flatpack Depacker[]

Flatpack depacker

The Flatpack depacker is an Invention item unlocked at level 109 invention, used in the construction skill to automatically note or disassemble flatpacks while creating them in your Player-owned house. The flatpack depacker has 60 charges once activated. To activate, an empty inventory slot is required.

Understanding experience earned[]

Experience gained is calculated from the experience per construction material used. The experience gained from making 2 items with 2 oak planks is the same as making one item with 4 oak planks. Therefore, it is more efficient to make items requiring more supplies, as the cost per experience is the same.

Completing Tasks[]

Completing daily challenges for Construction guarantees reimbursement for used planks (for most flatpack items) in the form of other items, as well as additional experience. If you get other 99s before construction, disabling tasks for those can severely increase the number of constructions tasks you get.

A nice added feature is being able to use Protean planks to complete challenges which reimburses the amount of planks used to complete the challenge. The Mahogany toy box (flatpack) challenge is the most common task, requiring 240 Mahogany planks to complete which comes to a daily Challenge Mystery Bag/Rewards of 317,040 coins if challenges are forced.

Cost of earning construction experience[]

Most materials used in Construction cannot be made with skills and must be bought from suppliers or the Grand Exchange. Wooden planks are made by handing over logs and money to the sawmill operator or by using the logs in the Portable sawmill. Construction materials that can be made by the player are soft clay, molten glass, limestone bricks, and steel bars. Even these items are normally used in combination with other bought Construction materials, except for a very few, low experience items such as clay fireplaces (3 soft clay for 30 experience). Specialty items such as gold leaves, marble blocks, and magic stones can be bought from a specialty shop in Keldagrim or the Sawmill operator in the Ithell Clan District of Prifddinas.

After completing the appropriate Morytania achievements, one may receive 30 normal planks, 20 oak planks, or 10 teak planks daily from Razmire Keelgan, potentially worth 990, 1,200, or 900 construction experience respectively.

Notes:

  • You can turn clay into soft clay by adding water to it. This can be done in a player-owned house using a garden or kitchen water source.
  • You can turn limestone into limestone bricks using a chisel on it. This gives 6 Crafting experience.

Special logs[]

Special teak logs and special mahogany logs can be obtained randomly while cutting down their respective trees. These logs can be sold to a sawmill operator for 3,900 for mahogany or 1,300 for teak. If you have two of the same type, the sawmill operator will convert your inventory of logs for free in exchange for the special logs. This can be used to help reduce the cost of training Construction.

Techniques[]

Trip time[]

Note: This section does not apply if the player is using Servants.

With the correct choice of teleport techniques, very little running is required to make a round trip (either two-way or three-way). This means that the total trip time is largely dependent on how fast the player can click and select various options. Maximising the experience earned per hour depends on balancing the fastest possible round trip (i.e. least clicks) vs. a slightly slower round trip maximising the experience earned per trip. Players, therefore, vary in their precise technique - fast clickers tend to prefer the fastest possible trip. Players on slow computers or poor-quality internet connections tend to prefer maximising the experience per trip. Note that, because of the relatively low cost of teleporting compared to the cost of an inventory, the teleport cost tends to not be a factor in an optimised trip plan.

Plan round trip to optimise inventory[]

  • To maximise experience per trip, you need to maximise the number of planks/logs you transport per trip.
  • If you are using a beast of burden, you need at least one spare slot to swap logs/planks between the two inventories at the Plank Maker. A technique is to drop one or two planks to make this space and pick up the planks when done. Alternatively, you may decide that it is quicker to have a spare slot or two.
  • Bring materials in amounts equal to the highest multiple of the required materials to construct your items that are possible per trip (e.g., carry a multiple of 8 for larders, or 10s for Oak doors) as this reduces weight by not bringing extra material that won't be used. Alternatively, build something else to use the remaining planks (e.g. if you are carrying 26 planks, build two oak doors and then build two oak armchairs to use up the last 6 planks). With careful planning, this does not need to slow down a round trip very much.
  • Making Flatpacks can be a very fast way of using up almost any "left-over" planks. For instance, "Make All" Oak drawers will use up any even number of oak planks.
  • If you are three-way teleporting, always maximise your inventory of planks. Bank your unused planks, and when you have enough planks, skip the sawmill teleport for a cycle.

You cannot bring a summoning familiar in your house when you're in building mode.

Experience per trip[]

For number of planks carried. Higher numbers require a Beast of Burden.

Plank XP per item 24 28 30 44 58
Plank + Nails 29 696 812 870 1276 1682
Oak plank 60 1440 1680 1800 2640 3480
Teak plank 90 2160 2520 2700 3960 5220
Mahogany plank 140 3360 3920 4200 6160 8120

Servants[]

An alternative to travelling between your house and a bank is to use Servants to bring things from the bank to your house. This is faster than travelling yourself, because you can build while the servant is making the trip. Better servants make the round trip faster.

Servants have a right click option that allows the fetch-from-bank menu to be brought up quickly. Furthermore, the last request is saved, so the player can repeatedly ask for the same set of items to be brought without typing the specific quantity each time.

Hotkeys and minimal mouse movement[]

A game update in the week of March 10 2017 allowed players to use hotkeys (also called keybinds) to navigate the construction menu, as announced here. [1] This reduces the number of mouse movements per servant run from over 9 to just 3.

After right clicking to build on a hotspot, the client opens the window titled "Select a Piece of Furniture to Build" or similar. On this window, one option is to simply click on the desired item to construct. Another option is to press the number key corresponding to that item. Note that the items on this window are not numbered, but pressing keys works anyway, and this number corresponds to the order in increasing level requirement.

After building the object, one must remove it by right-clicking it. Pressing "1" is equivalent to clicking "Yes" to "Really remove it?" If one has moved the camera carefully, then one can right-click the hotspot/object without moving the mouse. This generally saves time because one does not need to aim the cursor. However, one should eventually right-click the servant, and this involves moving the mouse. Again, the servant's dialogue can be navigated using only hotkeys (see the Servant subsection below). Thus, with an appropriate setup, one only needs to move the mouse three times for each servant trip, with the rest of the procedure being accomplished with keystrokes and clicks. Beware of interface lag. Sometimes, pressing the right keystroke or click too early will yield the wrong action.

Remark: One may wonder why one needs a hotkey for the build window. After all, the build menu can be moved so that the desired item is in the same screen location as the hotspot. However, it is very desirable that the hotspot/object can be right-clicked without moving the mouse. The only way to do this is to move the hotspot/object near the bottom of the screen. Since the build menu cannot be dragged to the bottom of the screen, the only way to achieve three mouse-movements per servant run is to use hotkeys for the build window.

Flatpacks[]

Main article: Flatpack

Flatpacks are recommended as a less intensive way to train construction. Flatpacks are made in a workshop on a workbench and can be dropped or disassembled afterwards. Flatpacks can be added to the action bar to facilitate dropping.

  • Flatpacks can be sold on the Grand Exchange. However, there is very little demand for flatpacks so do not expect them to sell instantly.
  • Flatpacks can be alched, but the return is less than the cost of the runes.
  • Flatpacks may be sold to Advisor Ghrim in exchange for coins in the treasury of your kingdom, after completing the hard Fremennik achievements. In principle, he gives 10% of the material costs. How this is calculated is not clear, but the value of a flatpack is less than 10% of the GE price of a log plus the Sawmill fee. Since the Sawmill fee is fixed, this suggests that he values the logs at less than GE price but greater than the max store price.
    • Advisor Ghrim will not take noted items.
  • Flatpacks can be traded in at the Mobilising Armies activity for Investment credits. These credits are used to get reward credits which can be used to get money or other rewards. If you choose money, you can get a refund of the cost of the flatpacks.
  • Because flatpacks can be made while not in building mode, items can be dropped. This may be the most convenient way to get rid of flatpacks.
  • Flatpacks are rarely stored if using a Servant because the return is marginal or worse given the additional cost of using a servant trip to bank them. However, if you value the flatpacks at Advisor Ghrim rates, higher value flatpacks can be worth banking. Use a BoB to accumulate enough flatpacks to make the servant journey efficient.
  • Disassembling the flatpacks while the servant is retrieving planks is another good way to get rid of the flatpacks without being too click intensive. However, this requires Invention which is obtained at 80 Smithing, Divination, and Crafting.

You need a workbench to make Flatpacks, requiring a Workshop (Level 15 Construction). Higher levelled flatpacks will require you to upgrade the workbench accordingly.

Workbench Level Required Required Materials FlatPacks Able To Build

Flatpack return value[]

The following table shows the return on an example flatpack item used for training (note that all items with the same plank requirements will have different GE Sell prices but the same Advisor Ghrim return). The poor return should be compared with the total loss if an item is removed or dropped.

Flatpack Planks GE Sell Price Nominal Advisor Ghrim Return Return coins/XP
Oak magic wardrobe icon Oak magic wardrobe 4 49 336.4 −1.4
Carved oak magic wardrobe icon Carved oak magic wardrobe 6 16 504.6 −1.4
Teak magic wardrobe icon Teak magic wardrobe 4 19 242 −0.67
Carved teak magic wardrobe icon Carved teak magic wardrobe 6 85 363 −0.67
Mahogany magic wardrobe icon Mahogany magic wardrobe 4 331 720 −1.5

Note: Advisor Ghrim will value slightly less than the nominal 10% value. As a snapshot, on a particular day, he offered a return on some teak items that valued the teak log at 63 coins, assuming he gives full credit for the Sawmill fee. On the same day, the GE teak log price was 148 (plus 500 sawmills) and a teak plank 766, giving a real return of 9.7% or 8.2% respectively.

Disabling run[]

Disabling Run may be a good idea to slightly reduce the time lost when one accidentally clicks to walk on a square.

Recommended training methods[]

Level 1 to 19[]

Skill Level: 1-19 1-19
Experience: 66 to 96 per chair
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −105,875
Requirements: None
Items required: 125 planks and around 300 iron nails
Below level 20 Construction, one cannot have a butler, so you will have to carry the items yourself. In order to do this, you could use a ring of dueling and a house teleport tablet or simply run to the bank and back.

For the first levels of Construction, you need to buy or make planks and iron nails. Start by making crude wooden chairs in your parlour and removing them, using 2 planks and 2 iron nails for each (several nails are broken while training, so one should bring plenty of spare). 13 crude wooden chairs are needed to reach level 8, at which point one can make wooden chairs. Switch to building wooden chairs up to level 19. (This saves a small amount of time and actions.)

Training from level 1 to 19 with this method costs −103,875.

Level 19 to 33[]

Skill Level: 19-33 19-33
Experience: 120 to 180 per chair
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −132,884
Requirements: Level 19 Construction
Items required: 239 oak planks, although 238 is possible
Make oak chairs in your parlour at the same hotspot and continue to remove them. This uses 2 oak planks each, and nails are no longer necessary. At level 26, switch to oak armchairs in the same hotspot. This uses 3 oak planks each. Training from level 19 to 33 with this method costs −132,884.

A servant may be hired at this stage to save a small amount of time.

Level 33 to 52 or 63: Oak Larders[]

Skill Level: 33 - 52/63 33 - 52/63
Experience: 480 per larder
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −978,560
Requirements: Level 33 Construction
Items required: 1760 oak planks for 52 or 5840 oak planks for 63, 8 oak planks each
After level 33, you can make oak larders in your Kitchen. First, create the kitchen by clicking to build on a Door hotspot. Making oak larders requires 8 oak planks. It will take 1760 oak planks to go from 33 to 52 construction building oak larders and another 16,211 oak planks to get to 74 Construction. At level 40, you should go to the Servants' Guild to hire a Butler, and at level 50, upgrade to a Demon Butler or Mind-controlled monkey butler. Servants can be used to bring you planks, thus speeding up your construction training. The fastest way to do this is right click the servant and select the option to fetch items from the bank. If using the Butler, you can make an average of 2.5 oak larders per round; if using the demon butler, you can make an average of 3.25 oak larders per round.

When making oak larders with a butler, demon butler, or monkey butler, repeatedly request planks, then build and remove larders. With the regular butler, you can alternate 2 and 3 larders per round, whereas, with the demon butler or monkey butler, you can build 3 larders on 2/3 of the rounds and 4 larders on 1/3 of the rounds.

It is possible to save money by not using a butler, but this greatly lowers your experience per hour. The monkey butler should be hired if you have the required invention level, as there is no additional cost.

Players should stop making oak larders at level 52 if they wish to train using mahogany planks. Mahogany tables are the second fastest construction experience in the game but are not commonly made because of cost. As teak planks can be cheaper per experience than oak planks, you can switch to driftwood prawnbrokers at level 63. Note that oak planks may be cheaper per experience depending on current market prices.

Training from level 33 to 52 with this method costs −976,892 coins.

Training from level 33 to 63 with this method costs −3,247,040 coins.

Level 52 to 99 (easier method)[]

Skill Level: 52 52
Experience: 840 each
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −121,822,620
Requirements: Level 52 Construction, workshop with a Steel framed bench
Items required: 92220 mahogany planks, 6 mahogany planks each (flat pack)
This is the easiest long-term training method, requiring significantly less attention than building and destroying. 4 mahogany tables can be made per round, with the demon butler fetching 24 mahogany planks from the bank each round. The flatpacks can be disassembled (an excellent source of simple parts) or dropped. Dropping is slightly faster as disassembly resets the workbench interface.

Flatpacking is slightly slower than build and destroy, with experience rates maxing at about 500,000 per hour.

Training from level 52 to 99 with this method costs −121,822,620 coins.

Level 52 to 73 (expensive method)[]

Skill Level: 52 52
Experience: 840 each
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −8,203,410
Requirements: Level 52 Construction, a dining room or a Steel framed bench
Items required: 6210 mahogany planks, 6 mahogany planks each
The second-fastest method in the game is making Mahogany tables in the Dining room, using a demon or monkey butler to bring you planks, building 4 tables per round, and 5 every third round. Players who are somewhat slow at building and removing tables may wish to save a bit of money by using a normal butler and building 3 tables per round and 4 every third round.

Experience per hour rates for building mahogany tables vary depending on attention and the butler being used. A basic range of 350,000 experience to 500,000 experience an hour can be expected, with some players even exceeding 600,000 experience an hour.

Training from level 52 to 73 with this method costs −8,203,410 coins.

Level 63 to 99 (Cheaper Method)[]

Skill Level: 63 63
Experience: 720 each
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −52,353,792
Requirements: Level 63 Construction, Aquarium
Items required: 140736 Teak Planks, 8 teak planks each
Making Driftwood prawnbroker's yields experience rates between 500,000 to 650,000 experience per hour.
  • Build 1 Driftwood Prawnbroker, then destroy immediately.
  • Fetch 24 Teak Planks from Monkey Butler or Demon Butler
  • While your Monkey Butler or Demon Butler is away at the bank, build and destroy your next Two Driftwood Prawnbrokers as quick as you can.

It will take a couple of tries to get this method correct, but it's by far the quickest method to gaining experience. Although click-intensive; you will complete an entire inventory in less than 9 seconds.

Make sure to use 3D world editing (Settings -> Edit Mode -> 3D world editing) and make the world as small as possible and drag it to the bottom of the screen. This will make the "build" and "remove" options line up with a right click.

Training from level 63 to 99 with this method costs −52,353,792 coins.

Level 73 to 99 (Expensive Method)[]

Skill Level: 73 73
Experience: 1120 each
Speed: 5*****
Profit: −113,627,136
Requirements: Level 73 Construction, Aquarium
Items required: 86016 mahogany planks, 8 mahogany planks each
By far the most efficient way to train Construction, yielding experience rates between 650,000 and 900,000 experience per hour, is making Flotsam prawnbrokers.
  • Build 1 Flotsam Prawnbroker, then destroy immediately.
  • Fetch 24 Mahogany Planks from Monkey Butler Demon Butler
  • While your Monkey Butler or Demon Butler is away at the bank, build and destroy your next Two Flotsam Prawnbrokers as quick as you can.

Training from level 73 to 99 with this method costs −113,627,136 coins.

Seasonal Bonuses[]

  • Royal battleship kits were obtainable as a Treasure Hunter reward on several occasions. They were also a possible reward during Summer Beach Parties via a Treasure map. Players who still have this item(s) and are aiming to achieve 99 in Construction should use these at level 98 as this will yield the most experience, as royal battleship kits' rewarded experience scales with one's Construction level.

Alternative methods of gaining experience[]

Some quests grant Construction experience. See here for more details.

Wilderness Warbands[]

Construction supplies detail

Wilderness Warbands is a dangerous Distraction and Diversion that takes place in the Wilderness. The aim of the Distraction and Diversion is to infiltrate a camp occupied by god-following NPCs and loot supplies, which can then be exchanged with Quercus for experience. Players can gain Construction experience if they obtain and hand in Construction supplies. Players can gain between 49.5 at level 1, and 4,851.5 at level 99, Construction experience per supply that they exchange. Players can loot up to 25 Construction supplies while playing Wilderness Warbands, which grant between 1,237.5 and 121,287.5 Construction experience in total when given to Quercus. Players can calculate the exact amount of experience that they will receive, based on their Construction level and the number of supplies obtained, using the calculator on the Wilderness Warbands article.

Armadyl warband

Wilderness Warbands takes place every 7 hours. The Distraction and Diversion begins with a camp appearing in the Wilderness in one of 3 possible locations. A server-wide announcement will notify players of the camp's location when it spawns. Players can also find out the camp's location by talking to Quercus, who is located north-west of the Varrock Grand Exchange. Players must travel to the camp, avoid the sentries posted around its perimeter and sabotage the camp's god's beam, which is found in the centre of the camp. Successfully sabotaging the beam will result in NPCs allied to the invading players teleporting to the area to fight the NPCs guarding the camp. Players can also intervene in the fight if they wish. After all enemy NPCs have been killed, players can loot the tents in the camp to gain supplies. Each Wilderness Warband has 3 tents which contain supplies that grant experience in 3 of 5 possible skills (Farming, Mining, Construction, Herblore and Smithing). Players may loot up to 25 supplies from tents in the camp. Players may gain additional supplies by killing other players and taking any supplies that defeated players may have looted, as supplies are dropped upon death. Participating in looting tents will skull the player and cause them to become attackable by any other player, regardless of combat levels. Players cannot teleport out of the Wilderness while they have supplies in their inventory, and logging out while inside the Wilderness causes all supplies to be destroyed. Therefore, players must escape from the Wilderness by running out of the area. To avoid being killed by other while participating in Wilderness Warbands players are advised to join one of the dedicated friends chats for the Distraction and Diversion.

Long and Curved bones[]

Long bone detail

Long bones and Curved bones are rare or uncommon drops from many monsters that drop big bones and may be sold to Barlak, a cave goblin found in Dorgesh-Kaan, for coins, they will also gain Construction experience if their Construction level is 30 or above and they own a Player-owned house. Death to the Dorgeshuun is required to enter Dorgesh-Kaan. Experience gained for selling these bones is affected by Constructor's outfit and Sculpting chisel.

Hill and Moss giants are the easiest way to obtain these bones, but players should note that the bones themselves are still fairly rare, with long bones having a drop rate of 1/400 and curved 1/5,000.

Players may also find long bones in the Uncharted Isles, but it is very inefficient.

God Statues[]

It is unlocked after completing Let Them Eat Pie and requires you to have tutorial mode off.

To begin, speak to Copernicus Glyph who can be found in five major cities: Canifis (near the lodestone), Gu'Tanoth (just south-west of Yanille), Lumbridge (just west of the Lumbridge cow field, Prifddinas (in between the Amlodd and Ithell districts, directly west of the Tower of Voices), and Taverley (near the stone circle). Select a statue depicting a notable follower of one of five gods (Commander Zilyana for Saradomin; Juna for Guthix; K'ril Tsutsaroth for Zamorak; General Graardor for Bandos; Glarial for Seren) to be built then help erect the scaffolding.

Each statue completed will award Construction experience equal to a large XP lamp, this experience reward is not affected by wearing the Construction costume or sculpting chisel or by bonus experience.

Shifting Tombs[]

Shifting Tombs is a skilling minigame that is accessed in Menaphos after the completion of The Jack of Spades. It may be played solo, or in a group of up to 5 players. Ironmen players can play in groups that consist only of ironmen. Ozan tells the player of many rewards deep in the tombs. However, due to Amascut's corruption, players can only stay there for 5 minutes at a time before having to leave before the corruption infests them. Basic gameplay mechanics are explained during the first run.

Shifting Tombs allows players to gain experience in skills of their choosing by pledging allegiance to different gods. The four primary skill choices are Dungeoneering, Agility, Thieving, and Construction; players are able to choose whether they gain experience in all four skills or a particular one of them. While inside the tombs secondary experience will be given in Crafting, Runecrafting, Prayer, and Divination. Alternatively the player may opt to receive coins and other loot instead of experience which is the default option.

The minigame has three tiers: the first only requires level 50+ in the four primary skills, while the second and third tiers require level 70+ and level 90+, respectively, in all primary and secondary skills.

Harmonium harps - (level 75+)[]

Harp

Playing the harps located within the Ithell district in Prifddinas offers moderate crafting experience (about 50,000 experience per hour, as well as a little construction experience) rates with little attention required. Levels 75 Crafting and Construction are required to play the harps, and the Plague's End quest is required to access the city. Playing the harps will yield small amounts of harmonic dust, which is used to craft crystal tools and equipment. Harps will gradually fall out of tune in increments of 10%, granting only half the harmonic dust at 50%, and becoming totally unplayable at 100%; the harp can be tuned again at any time, granting 50 construction experience for every 10% tuned.
