[FAQ] [doc]

The Corporeal Beast (a.k.a. the Corp Beast, the Beast, C beast, the Corp, and CB) is currently the second strongest monster in RuneScape, behind Nex. It was released on 15 September, 2008 with the Summer's End quest, and completion of the quest is required to fight it. When it was released, players could stand underneath the Corporeal Beast and not be harmed; but on 15 October, 2008, Jagex changed this, giving the beast a stomp attack that harms players underneath it. The beast's health meter is three times as long as that of players and as that of almost all other NPCs.

The monster has a maximum melee hit of 513 and a maximum Magic hit of 650. It resides in a multicombat area, so it can be fought in teams. It has very high defence and life point levels, making it extremely hard to solo. Others could solo it by using a glitch (such as the 9 June 2009 game engine update glitch which prevented the Beast from retaliating).

Gravestones cannot be obtained within the area. However, players have exactly 2 minutes to return to the cave and pick up their lost items if they die. The fastest returning method is having a death spawn at Soul Wars, getting a super energy potion, teleporting to the Corporeal Beast's cave using the Games Necklace and running to the end of the cave. However, a grave will appear for players who die outside of the room in the passageway.

Habitat

The Beast resides in the caves north of the ruined farms in the Wilderness, in the final room. If players have not completed Summer's End, they will not see the beast; the cavern will be empty.

Getting there

File:Darkcore.png

The Dark Energy Core, summoned by the Corporeal Beast

World 22 is the unofficial Corporeal Beast extermination world. Usually, teams meet up at the Wilderness Volcano, or outside the cave entrance.

The easiest way to get to the cave is to teleport there using a Games Necklace and then walk through to the final room.

The Corporeal Beast is in the final room, so it is advised to stop outside the final room to regroup, turn on auto retaliate, activate prayers, drink potions, food, etc.

Beast attacks

The beast's attacks are:

  1. A translucent ball of energy propelled at a player, which is a range-based attack. This will deal ±550 life points without prayer and will drain a player's Magic, Prayer or Summoning level by a small amount. If the attack tries to drain a stat that is already at zero, the attack will instead drain life points.
  2. A more powerful, magic-based spiky blast of energy. This can deal up to 650 life points.
  3. An attack that looks like a flying claw. This targets a location on the ground, rather than a player. If players move out of the way before it lands, the first Claw will not deal any damage. Once this lands, however, it will fire off four smaller Claws. These attacks will deal up to 400 life points individually; this is slightly reduced by Protect from Magic.
  4. The beast also has a single-target melee attack which hits up to 513. It can be blocked completely by Protect from Melee, although using this prayer makes the other attacks more dangerous. It will only use this attack when standing next to the target player. This move used to be avoidable by standing underneath the Beast until it targets another player, but is no longer effective because of the beast's stomp attack.
  5. The beast will sometimes summon a Dark Energy Core. It is level 75, and has 250 life points. Even with its low Defence and life points, it may be difficult to kill as it can only be damaged some of the time. The Stranger plant special move and Emerald bolts (e) will help to freeze it for a long period of time, and it will cause damage at about 1/30 the normal speed. The Dark Energy Core jumps around the room, hurting all players standing within one square of it for 50 to 100 life points rapidly; about every half second. Any damage this deals also heals the Beast. However, continually avoiding the Core will not help a team, because the Core cannot be attacked while it is jumping after a player. The best thing for players to do is to stun it. They should not worry about the beast healing; these healed life points will be quickly depleted if the player has a good team.
  6. The beast was given a stomp attack that damages players standing underneath it. This attack cannot be blocked by Protect from Melee, and deals up to 513 life points. Players can run out of his range of stomping so that they cannot be attacked, but this is hard to do. Vengeance is not activated by this attack.

Its attacks will always follow through to the area outside the passage if already discharged, even when players leave. However, if the beast kills you outside the main area, you will be granted a gravestone upon death.

Killing tactics

Starting off

  • It's best to have a somewhat large team (8-15) using a mixture of melee and ranged. Magic is not recommended because it is ineffective, and players may have their magic drained during the fight. The only magic recommended are vengeance spells
  • Once your team is assembled outside the Corporeal Beast's lair, peek inside to see if any teams are already there.
  • If you are using LootShare, check now to make sure that everyone has turned it on, and the settings are how you want them.
  • If you are using Lunar Spells, cast Vengeance. Heal Other may also be useful.
  • Protect from Magic or Deflect Magic does not help against the magic splash attack. It's a rumour, that magic protection stops the Beast from hitting high.

Note: It is best that you do not bring Summoning Familiars due to the fact that the beast may devour their souls.

The strategy

The strategy that most teams use is called the Lure Method. Players gather outside the entrance to the lair, where the beast cannot attack them. Using Protect from Magic or Deflect Magic, one player enters and lures the beast near the entrance, and then all players go in and attack. The player who lured the Beast quickly exits the cave, taking

File:Spirit 1920x1200.jpg

The Corporeal Beast.

with him the attention of the Beast. Once the Corporeal Beast has its attention on the player outside the entrance, the team will run out when they get targeted, to avoid heavy damage.

The fight

  • Once inside, spread out. The Claw attack will hit an area around where it lands, so spreading out will make this attack hit fewer people.
  • Warriors should form a ring around the beast, while rangers or mages should scatter, staying fairly close to the entrance.
  • The key to survival is knowing that the beast has targeted you, and run out of the cave before it can deal damage. However, if the entire team runs out of the cave, the beast will heal completely—regardless of how much damage it has already taken.
  • If massing, rangers should hug the north wall, as the beast will rarely attack them there.
  • In conjunction with Deflect Magic, the ancient curse Turmoil would be extremely helpful.

Solo Method

The Corporeal Beast is considered nearly impossible to solo. However, with higher levels, usually with 96+ Herblore and Summoning using Overload potions and Saradomin Brews via a Pack yak, it is possible to solo the beast. These players may also use the Statius Warhammer to lower the defence of the beast. Also, since the Dwarven Multicannon CAN be used in the beast's lair, assuming they have the concentration to do so while changing prayer and eating at the same time, players can augment normal battle damage with cannon fire, so long as they remember to re-load it. In fact, it has been shown that extremely skilled players can actually solo it with no food or Saradomin brews, switching briefly to the Soul Split curse to heal, and then back to Deflect Melee. This is an extremely rare occurrence, however, as the beast can easily hit the player hard if they slip up switching prayers. Currently when The Corporeal Beast eats a Beast of Burden you only have 2 minutes to pick up the items before it disappears.

The Corporeal Beast can also 1 Hit-KO a person with its claw attack that bursts into several different attacks. If you stand in front of it you will be hit multiple times and chance of death is very high. However, taking another person with you to share the damage has been proven somewhat effective and is highly recommended.

The efficient method

Efficient teams use 6-8 players equipped with spears and armour with high magic defence. Players on the team should also carry a ranged weapon but only use it to poison the Dark Energy Core. The Beast should be killed as it spawns to maximize kills per hour and luring should be avoided. In some cases, if a player attempts to bank after only a few spawn kills he or she will be kicked from the team so players should avoid using foods such as monkfish. Players should have Turmoil activated at all times. Players should use Deflect Magic, or Soul Split if they have taken damage, except the player currently under attack, who should not attempt to use Soul Split. Deflect Melee is not recommended for the current target - the Beast is much more dangerous with its magic attacks (and uses them more frequently in any case).

Though this is a fine method with a large team, people with fairly good teams of 4-8 should lure the beast to either side of the entrance. The lurer then stands outside while the rest of the team surrounds the beast making it unable to move around. If there is one ranger they stand in the beast's one blind spot around the last corner from the entrance. They attack the beast until it turns to them, then they stand in the safespot. The rest of the team should use black dragonhide and Helms of neitiznot as well as the Ardougne Cloak 3. This enables them to have good magic defence with minimum loss if they die. The cape is used for teleporting to the Ardougne monastery to recharge prayer between kills. All of the meleers should use Zamorakian spears for the stab offence and rangers should use ruby bolts (e). Meleers protect melee at all times and turn on piety or turmoil, rangers Protect from Magic and use Eagle Eye or Rigour . High level meleers who wish to risk it can use Soul Split when the beast is not attacking them. With this set-up you can do maximum damage to the beast as well as forcing him to turn to attack each player in much the same way as when killing the King Black Dragon effectively. Each player should use stat boosting potions and meleers should bring a magic short bow with rune arrows equipped to deal with the dark core without moving, or use a mithril crossbow or above using emerald (e) bolts to "stun" the core to stop it draining life points rapidly and stop it moving ( a player has to be within a square of the core for it to stop moving and the life point drain rate will be the same as poison).

Massacre

File:Corpmass.png

A busy corporeal beast massacre

A massacre, commonly abbreviated to "mass", entails players grouping in large teams (40-100). Players can also bring cannons, which harm the beast and kill the core. Having so many players will allow the team to kill the beast in as little as 4 seconds.

The En Masse Strategy

This strategy is incredibly hard to pull off because of the large amount of people needed, but is also incredibly simple. Gather a group of 250 people with at least 60 Ranged. Equip each of them with a Dark bow and Dragon arrows. Then simply have each of them fire one special attack at the beast. Because of the minimum damage of the Dark bow special (80-80 normally for Dragon arrows, reduced to 40-40 on the corporeal beast) and the massive amounts of people attacking, this strategy is a guaranteed one-hit kill. However, this would reap little reward because of the large amounts of people. Still, it is often done for the entertainment value of killing the Beast in one hit.

Another theoretical (and possibly more effective) technique that has not been tested would be to mass enough people to kill the Beast in 1 hit with Ruby Bolts (e). Before the constitution system, it was uncommon (though not unheard of) for players FFA killing the Corporeal Beast to "tie" for the most damage for a kill, and 2 people both receive [different] drops from the same kill. As the Ruby Bolts (e) special attack is a guaranteed 1000 lifepoints, in theory if there were ~200+ people killing the beast all equipped with these bolts, the beast could be 1hit and every player that did a special that kill would receive a drop. It should be noted that this is only theoretical, and that the special rate for Ruby Bolts is rather uncommon, possibly 1/10 or rarer.

What to bring

Weapons

The Corporeal Beast can only be attacked normally by stab attack style, or magic. Range, crush, slash and non-spear stab attacks suffer a 50% damage reduction. This includes the chaotic weapons from Dungeoneering. Therefore if you plan to use melee on the Corporeal Beast the only really practical main weapons are the Zamorakian Spear and the Vesta's Spear. Both the Dragon Spear and Guthan's Warspear have too low stats to be effective on the Beast.

Despite the somewhat linear choice of main weapons to use, people use several different types of 'side spec' weapons in order to increase damage done to the Beast. These include:

  • Dragon Halberd - Despite the 50% damage reduction, the special hits twice on the Beast.
  • Darklight - Often used as a cheap option to drain the Beast's defence, but only mildly effective.
  • Statius's Warhammer - Generally regarded as the best 'side spec' going, it does high damage and drains Defence severely.

  • Pros: No risk of losing ammunition if you die; very effective.
  • Cons: The risk of dying is higher. The Claw attack is more likely to damage players who are using melee, as they are closer to the Beast and so have less time to avoid the first and then split attacks.

Ruby bolts (e)

Because the Corporeal Beast has 20,000 Life points, in theory, Ruby bolts (e) would be capable of hitting a 4000. However, the Corporeal Beast can only receive 1000 damage maximum from the special.

  • Pros: Ability to attack from a distance; hits up to 1000.
  • Cons: The risk of losing much more money (for the bolts) upon death, the beast often attacks you when the special of the bolt occurs.

Cannon

The Corporeal Beast is one of the few bosses that the Dwarf Multicannon can be used against. Teams should have 2–3 cannons, if possible, to minimise the chance of death.

  • Pros: Easily takes care of killing the Dark Energy Core when it appears, which greatly improves a team's chances of success. It will not be lost on death if it has been set up.
  • Cons: Cannon is somewhat inaccurate against the beast itself and also needs to be continually reloaded, plus the cannon could decay if the owner isn't paying any attention. If the cannon is facing the beast when it spawns it will be the first to attack it and the owner of the cannon will be targeted.

Armour

Since the possibility of death is high, it is best to bring only what you need to fight, and little more. It is good advice to bring only offensive items, as the Beast's Attack is so high that wearing armour almost makes no difference. However, with the Armour Soaking update Black Dragonhide is recommended due to its Magic soaking percentage.

Rangers

Due to the Corporeal Beast's damage reduction against all non-spear stabbing attacks, all ranged damage will be reduced by 50%. This has been proven through the use of the Dark bow's special attack, which hits a minimum of 25-25 against the beast instead of the normal 50-50 (40-40 instead of the normal 80-80 with dragon arrows). Due to this damage reduction, a spear weapon is strongly recommended over the ranged attack style, even at low attack and strength and high ranged levels. Rangers are advised to bring:

Recommended Ranged level: 85+

Warriors

Warriors are advised to bring (roughly in order of preference):

* Having one of these two capes is typically a requirement for high-level teams. The Fire Cape offers more defence against the Beast's attacks and a Strength bonus, whereas the Ardougne Cloak offers a stab bonus, a reasonable prayer bonus and an easy way to restore prayer.

Inventory

The rest of the inventory can be filled with:

Miscellaneous

  • The Vengeance spell deals large amounts of damage and will not miss, but it is hard to make sure the spell is active for the whole team. Use Vengeance Other if a player does not have 94 Magic, but make sure you have Vengeance activated. Vengeance is best used in larger teams where inventory space is not at such a premium for every member.
  • Be cautious and stay away from the beast if bringing Summoning familiars, as the Beast will devour them after a set time period.
  • Try and let your team know in advance if you need to bank. Going from a 5- to 4-man team for a kill incurs a significant increase in food/brew consumption. Always remember to bank promptly after a kill—the Beast's respawn timer is shorter than you think.
  • Warning: Always confirm the Items Kept on Death before entering. It is very probable that you will die, regardless of circumstances. Use of quick-prayers for Deflect Magic and Protect Item is recommended. After receiving an item from LootShare, recheck your Items Kept on Death. Gaining a Mystic Robe piece, Dragon Spear or other items might cause those to be kept over something else you might want to keep.
  • Important: It is highly recommended to have a stock of at least one Games Necklace and a super energy potion, because if you die you can go back to retrieve your items quickly.
  • A Ring of Life or Phoenix necklace generally don't merit use at the Beast. They require that you not equip a more useful combat item in that slot and rarely prove useful enough to justify this; the Beast's attacks are very likely to deal more than 200 damage at once, in which case neither item will activate.
  • If standing directly under the beast, the Retribution prayer will not activate.

Trivia

  • It is possible to kill the Corporeal Beast in less than 5 seconds with a large group of people, all wielding Dragon halberds and using Vengeance, Piety, and Protect from magic.
  • The Beast has a strength of 497 if it is calculated using its melee max hit.
  • During the 9th of June, 2009, game engine update glitch, players could solo the Corporeal Beast because it would not retaliate using magic. It could, however, stomp players. The only users known to be banned were the ones who revealed their names in posted videos.
  • When entering the cave of the Corporeal Beast, the Wilderness level will go to 107 for a split second.
  • The Corporeal Beast is featured in the RuneScape trailer when visiting the website for the first time, under the caption "Slay the mightiest of foes."
  • When Summer's End quest came out, many players believed the beast needed to be defeated in order to complete it, when in fact only dodging its attacks is necessary.
  • The Corporeal Beast, so far, has the second most life points among all of the NPCs in RuneScape, the third being Nomad and the first Nex. At the time of its release, it was the only creature to have an extra-long hitpoints bar.
  • Corporeal means material; tangible; physical. It is the antonym of "ethereal," which means spiritual in form. Hence. when the Spirit Beast was killed in the spirit realm, and because the spirit and normal worlds (or ethereal and corporeal) are antonymous, the Corporeal Beast was born in the corporeal realm.
  • The Corporeal Beast is immune to dragonfire blasts from the Dragonfire shield and resulting attempts will hit 0 life points.
  • The Corporeal Beast does not have the highest max hit, despite being the second highest level monster in the game. Tz-Tok-Jad is capable of hitting much higher. With the release of the quest Nomad's Requiem, Nomad has an attack with a max hit based on the player's Constitution level. However, what it lacks in high hits, it makes up for with very high defence and life points.
  • While being the second strongest monster, it is not the hardest to defeat, as it can be piled (or pile jumped "pjed") by lots of high-level players at once. Yet, it is the second hardest monster to solo known to date. as it takes a lot of concentration and very high combat levels.
  • The Corporeal Beast is one of two monsters that drops the complete Crystal key (not just one half of it), the other one being Kree'ara. The only other way to get a whole key is as a reward from Elite clue scrolls or by looting a Kingly impling.
  • Before completing Summer's End, if you visit the final cave, you can see the graves of Summer Bonde, Erik Bonde, Meranek Thanatos, Jallek Lenkin and Jennica Bonde. However, after the quest, the memorial plaques seem to have been torn apart by the Corporeal Beast.
  • If you walk to the easternmost area in the Corporeal Beast's cave. you will be able to see the basement of the Tower of Life.
  • As well, in the westernmost area, right as you enter the cave, it is possible to see the Dark Warrior's Castle from an angle.
