- This article is about the crafting skill. For more information on training crafting, see Free-to-play Crafting training or Pay-to-play Crafting training.
- For the skill of rune creation, see Runecrafting.
Crafting is a varied skill which enables players to produce items such as jewellery, armour, and pottery for use or trade. At level 40 Crafting, while wearing a brown apron obtained from the Varrock clothes store, a player can enter the Crafting Guild.
The current minimum requirement to be ranked (at approximately rank 1,060,795) on the hiscores for Crafting is level 15.
Pottery
Pottery is the craft of turning Soft clay into pottery objects. Soft clay can be obtained either by mining Clay and using it with a bucket of water, or mining with a Bracelet of clay, which will remove the need to add water. Once soft clay is obtained, it can be used on a Potter's wheel to make the object desired, which is then fired in a Pottery oven.

Leather crafting
Cowhide
To begin leather crafting, players need a needle and thread, normally purchased from the Al-Kharid or Rimmington craft shop, and some cowhide tanned into leather. In the free-to-play world, this means visiting the tanner in Al-Kharid, until players are able to enter the guild. Tanning costs 1 coin per ordinary leather, and 3 coins for the hard leather used to make a hard leather body. There is also a more expensive tannery in Canifis. Note: You can also make easy money by buying cowhides from the Grand Exchange for around 547 coins each, going to Al-Kharid, and making the hide into hard leather, which sells for about 670 coins each.
The cattle field east of Lumbridge is a convenient spot for leather crafters, since it is normally largely populated and easy to get to. Since getting from the Al-Kharid tanner to the Lumbridge cow pens frequently requires players to cross the Al-Kharid toll gate, it is advisable for players to complete Prince Ali Rescue to reduce cost. Players can also head north from the gate until they get to Ali the leaflet dropper, where they can go south again on the other side of the fence. Another convenient location to obtain cowhide in a free-to-play world is near the gnome copters as there is a field with cows and a merchant named Beefy Bill who can store your cowhide, flour, and meat for 10% commission nearby. The efficiency of this area is arguable, since the cows are widespread and the area contains many obstacles. The field just south of Falador is also convenient, since there are many more cows together in a smaller place, allowing faster kills. The distance to the bank from this field is longer than the gnome copters field, but shorter than the field east of Lumbridge.

Snakeskin (members)
Snakeskins are found by killing Snakes on the island of Mos Le'Harmless, during the Tai Bwo Wannai cleanup mini-game and during the Temple Trekking mini-game. They can be tanned for 15 coins each, and then crafted using a needle and thread.
Snakeskins are also used to make tribal masks into Broodoo shields. A member can make snakeskins into items of snakeskin armour, as shown on the table below, if they have a needle and thread.

Yak hide (members)
After starting The Fremennik Isles quest, members can kill Yaks to obtain Yak-hides and make them into Fremennik armour pieces. The Yak hides need to be cured for 5 coins to become craftable. It is not advised to make bodies for experience because you lose an extra hide in the process.

Dragonhides (members)
This members-only part of the crafting skill is extremely similar to normal leather crafting, except that:
- 20 coins are paid to tan one piece of hide.
- Only vambraces, chaps, and bodies can be made.
- High alchemy is quite preferred to be cast on dragonhide bodies or vambraces rather than chaps, for their difference in coins received.
- Obtaining dragonhides is slow but profitable.
- Buying dragonhides is faster, though price is far higher than the high-alchemy value.
- Players may attach kebbit claws to any vambraces to make spiky vambraces, giving +2 Strength bonus and 6 Crafting experience.
- Using a Sacred clay needle halves the cost of crafting.

Glass (members)
Glass is a members-only part of the crafting skill. You will need the following:
- A glassblowing pipe. They can be obtained from various places, including respawn points on Entrana and in Hemenster or the stores in Dorgesh-Kaan and the Piscatoris Fishing Colony.
- Buckets of sand. There are sand pits in Yanille, Rellekka, Dorgesh-Kaan, in the Lost City of Zanaris, and on Entrana. Use an empty bucket with a sand pit to get a bucket of sand. If you complete the Hand in the Sand quest, you can get 84 buckets of sand a day delivered to your bank free of charge if you talk to Bert in person or via the NPC Contact spell.
- Soda ash is made by burning seaweed (or possibly swamp weed) on a range or fire (with no experience in any skill). There are a number of seaweed spawning on Entrana, on Karamja. Or it can be fished using a big net. There are two quick spawns inside the Piscatoris fishing colony. Arhein, the general-store owner in Catherby, will sell eighty per day to each player. Simply talk to him and ask about buying seaweeds. They cost 2 coins each.
- Note: The supply will remain 80 on each day even though the previous purchase in the day before may not empty the stock.
When you have all of the ingredients, use a bucket of sand and soda ash in a furnace to create molten glass.
- Note: The lunar spell Superglass Make also can be used to convert soda ashes/seaweeds and buckets of sand into molten glass. Buckets will be destroyed during this process. You will get 10 Crafting experience for each molten glass created using this spell, rather than the normal 20 with a furnace, but you will also make between one and ten extra molten glass.
Use the glass-blowing pipe with the molten glass to blow various items.

Locations
Entrana is a perfect place to blow glass, as it has respawns for glassblowing pipe and seaweed and has a sand pit, range and furnace. Dorgesh-Kaan also has a sand pit next to a furnace. Molanisks, which can be found just south of the city, drop swamp weed, a suitable substitute for seaweed. There is also a range just to the east of the furnace, making Dorgesh-Kaan an effective place to blow glass. For further crafting experience one can add a Cave goblin wire to a light orb. Copper wire is thieved from a machine next to the furnace in Dorgesh-Kaan (level 44 thieving required and 22 Thieving experience gained). Adding the wire gives 104 crafting experience (level 87 required).
Stills and oil lamps (members)
If you want to fill oil lamps with Lamp oil, you need to use a piece of swamp tar on a lamp oil still with an empty oil lamp in your inventory. There are 2 stills in RuneScape: the scientists house in Rimmington and the lamp stall in Dorgesh-Kaan The Apothecary in Varrock can also turn the Swamp Tar into oil for lamps.
Battlestaves (members)
The orbs you create through glassblowing can be enchanted at any one of the four obelisks. You can then use them to create elemental battlestaves and make a nice profit. An elemental battlestaff can be created by using a charged orb with a battlestaff.
A battlestaff may be bought in Zaff's Superior Staffs! in Varrock or Baba Yaga's Magic store on Lunar Isle. The stock at Zaff's increases if you are wearing Varrock armour obtained by finishing sections of the Varrock Achievement Diary. Baba Yaga's shop stocks a maximum of 20 staves. Blank staves cost 7000 coins at Zaff's, and the market price at Baba Yaga's, which is generally 8000-8300 coins (finished battlestaves with orbs yield 9300 coins after high-alchemy). Given the common practice of players to buy daily dose of 64 battlestaff items and sell them at a profit, it is a very interesting way to level crafting. Depending on GE prices for charged orbs, attaching orbs to a battlestaff can be a low cost way to train crafting. The only catch is the high cost of the items which requires a significant working capital.

File:Staff of Air.png | Air battlestaff | 66 | 137.5 | The air obelisk is located in the members part of Edgeville Dungeon, in level 7 wilderness. You will find it north of the Black Demons, up a ladder. |
Battlestaves are one of the most profitable things you can make in RuneScape and give from 172 to 210 experience when you do all steps yourself, from making the glass, blowing the orbs, and attaching to staffs.
Tips for dealing with glass and battlestaves:
- Buy lots of buckets! Another way of obtaining large numbers of buckets is by speaking to Bert in Yanille. If you have completed The Hand in the Sand quest he will offer to give you 84 buckets of sand every day. You will also save the chore of filling them with sand.
- Once you have about 500 buckets you can start making battlestaves, skills required:
- Magic: 60 (66 highly recommended)
- Runecrafting: 27 (44 highly recommended, 54 is even better)
- Crafting: 58 (64 highly recommended)
- Quests required: Lost City
- Items required: Buckets, glassblowing pipe
Alternative 1: Collect seaweed on Entrana, and burn the seaweed on a range on the way to the bank. (Runecrafting law runes may be included too.) Alternative 2: Arhein on the dock in Catherby will sell you 80 seaweed a day if you talk to him instead of trading him. (He will also sell you 40 pineapples for making supercompost.) Alternative 3: Take charged amulets of glory and bank at Draynor instead. You'll get more laws and more seaweed this way, but you'll have to burn later, and plan a trip to the Heroes' Guild to recharge your amulets. Alternative 4: Another option is to collect it from people dropping in Catherby, or simply buy it from the people doing big net fishing there, or collect in Piscatoris while catching monkfish. Seaweed and soda ash sell for 100-200 coins each.
- Go to Zanaris and fill your buckets with sand. Alternatively, Yanille is a good place to get sand (see below).
- Go to Al-Kharid and make some molten glass.
- Make your glass into orbs with the glassblowing pipe.
- Go to any of the elemental obelisks and charge your orbs.
- For earth or air orbs: (This involves going into Wilderness!)
Wield either earth or air staff and armour. Fill the inventory with uncharged orbs and 3 cosmics for each orb. The earth obelisk is south of the black demons next to Chronozon, air obelisk is north of the demons up a ladder. Bring a teleport for a leaving trip. (Amulet of glory to Edgeville is suggested)
- For water or fire orbs:
Wield either water or fire staff and armour, dragonfire shield. Bring anti-poison potion (or Bracelet of Inoculation), a key to get through the gate as an alternative of using the agility shortcut, a teleport (or mithril grapple and crossbow for water obelisk), and fill rest of inventory with uncharged orbs and cosmic runes (3 per orb). The water obelisk is next to the black dragons, up a ladder and the fire obelisk is west of the black dragons. Note that making water and fire orbs is a really long trip and it's highly recommended that you make earth or air orbs instead. High agility gives a couple of possible shortcuts in the dungeon, as well as an escape from the water obelisk island using a mithril grapple & crossbow.
- Once your cash is exhausted from buying staves, attach all the orbs to the battlestaves, sell them or high-alchemise them.
- The most economical method is to have Varrock armour 3 to buy 64 staves daily from Zaff, talk to Bert to get your 84 buckets of sand delivered daily (requires Hand in the sand quest), and buy seaweed from from Arhein in Catherby. This limits you to 64 a day at the highest profit margin. Collect materials for several days and then actually make and alch your staffs.
Silver
Silver items can be crafted by using a Silver Bar on a Furnace while carrying the proper mould. The items you can make are displayed below.
Template:TableOfSilverItems
Gems and gold jewellery
For gold crafting, you need:
- Gold bars. Mine gold ore and smelt it into bars.
- A ring, necklace, bracelet or amulet mould, purchased from a craft shop or Grand Exchange, or freely acquired from a Tool store 4 in a player-owned house.
- You may include a cut gem. Cutting it with a chisel also provides significant crafting experience. Gems can be obtained while mining. They can also be bought in Keldagrim, Falador, Al-Kharid, and East Ardougne Market.
Gold items are made by using a gold bar with a furnace, while carrying a mould and any cut gems you wish to use. The items that you have the ingredients to make will be displayed by the resulting interface.
Be aware that crafting jewellery without gems gives very little experience compared to clay and silver.
Immense heat (members)
Immense Heat is a special move for Pyrelords. Players can smelt a gold bar (and a gem if one wishes) into an item of Jewellery without using a furnace, providing they have the required crafting level.

Unstrung amulets can be sold at a general store. In order to sell amulets at Grum's in Port Sarim or enchant them, they must be strung, using a ball of wool.
Stringing an amulet gives an additional 4 experience per amulet, and spinning the ball of wool is another 2.75.

Shilo Village gems can be obtained from:
- Gem mines in Shilo Village (after completing Shilo Village quest)
- Underground Shilo Village gem mine using Karamja gloves 3 after completing the hard tasks of the Karamja Diary
- Gem mines in the dungeon on Lunar Isle
- Cutting down "jungle" in Tai Bwo Wannai cleanup gives a small chance of a 3-gem mine
- Opening Zogre tombs

Rogue's Den (members)
An often overlooked corner of the crafting (and sometimes thieving) world is the Rogue's Den. Crafting experience lies not in the course, but in the wall safes at the entrance. Players looking to work multiple skills can crack the safes, which yield coins in 10, 20, or 40 increments or (the main lure to crafters) gems from sapphire to diamond. These gems can be sold for profit or used to further train crafting through the crafting of jewellery.
While a player may not receive a gem every time, it is efficient as it does not require but a second for a safe to respawn. As well, unlike its thieving companion pickpocketing there is no stun period to deal with. A major advantage is the extreme proximity of a bank to store one's ill-gotten gains. Unlike the gem rocks of the Shilo Village, a player doesn't have to deal with gems below sapphires which yield comparatively lower experience and can occasionally be crushed. If a player pursues this crafting route, it is advised to have food stored in the nearby bank as failure to crack the wall safes can result in 2~6 damage (but no stun period). It is also recommended that a player purchase a stethoscope in the Rogue's Den for use when cracking safes. A stethoscope is sold for approximately 10 gp in the den. The Rogue's Den is typically moderately populated, but this is not for the wall safes or agility/thieving course. Instead, these players train the cooking skills since this area has one of the closest "everlasting" fires to a bank in all of RuneScape.
Note the wall safes do require 50 Thieving.
Miscellaneous
Coloured capes
Capes can be purchased from the Varrock clothes shop or collected by killing highwaymen south of Falador. Dyes are made for you by Aggie in Draynor Village, at a cost of 5 coins plus the ingredients. There is also a purple dye spawn south of Ardougne. Also, players may buy any colour dye in the store in Lletya for 3 coins a piece
With just 2 experience for a single dye and 3 for a mixed dye, this is not good value, though many players like to wear a coloured cape to signify clan allegiance, or just because it looks good.

Fremennik roundshields (members)
After the beginning of The Fremennik Isles quest, members can combine woodcutting with crafting by making Fremennik roundshields. Making a roundshield requires 1 bronze nail, 1 rope, 2 arctic pine logs, and a hammer to craft it. The crafting of the shield gives 34 crafting experience.
Gloves of silence (members)
At level 64 crafting, you can repair Gloves of silence with a dark kebbit fur, needle, and thread. Wearing Gloves of silence decreases the failing rate when pickpocketing NPCs.
Feather headdress (members)
At level 79 crafting use 20 coloured feathers on a coif to make a Feather headdress for 50 experience.

Note that it is a good idea to earn both experience and money with flax and the Grand Exchange: Flax costs The time allocated for running scripts has expired. coins each while bowstrings cost The time allocated for running scripts has expired., which is approximately double. It is suggested that players buy a large amount of Flax , then spin it in a convenient location, such as Lumbridge, then sell the bowstrings on the Grand Exchange, which is in moderate demand among players. If player has finished Fremennik Isles quest, it would be a lot faster to spin flax using the bank chest one click away. Low level players can make up to 200k an hour by doing the process.
Players that have completed Throne of Miscellania quest can get a maximum of 1250 flax from their subjects daily.
Also, players wearing the Seers' headband 2 or better while spinning on Seers' Village gets the spinning time cut considerably, allowing more flax spun in less time.
Snelms (members)
In the Mort Myre swamp, there are snails that drop shells when killed. You can use a chisel with these shells to create snelms. Each snelm made gives 32.5 experience. Snelms come in two varieties - pointed and rounded.
