Crystal Shapeshifters are Slayer monsters located on Tarddiad after completion of the quest The Light Within. They can fight with all three combat styles, and similar to the Revenants they will switch dependent on the combat style you are using. Crystal Shapeshifters are more dangerous than their combat level suggests and shouldn't be taken lightly if fought for the first time. They use combat abilities to a much greater extent than the Prifddinas elves. They also have two unique abilities which makes them challenging.
Crystal Shapeshifters switch their combat styles by shapeshifting, dependent on the combat style the player uses to attack them, focusing on using the style the player is weak to. Activating a protection prayer that protects from the style that counters the player's attack style will prevent them from shapeshifting altogether. For example, if a player uses magic equipment the shapeshifter will switch to Ranged, but if the player has Protect/Deflect Missles prayer in use, the shapeshifter will be unable to switch styles and use its initial style for the remainder of the combat or until the prayer is switched off. It should be noted, however, that the melee shapeshifters are capable of disabling a player's protection prayers/curses.
In addition to regular abilities in their respective combat style, crystal shapeshifters can roll into a spiked ball and run through the player, dealing approximately 1500-2500 melee damage. It is unknown what causes this but a shapeshifter can roll several times in a row, dealing massive damage.
Angof can be spoken with to make the shapeshifters unaggressive if desired. While aggressive, they have a rather large aggression range and it is dangerous to have more then two shapeshifters attacking you at once.
For every piece of crystal armour worn excluding the first piece, the maximum amount of crystals dropped increases by 1. For example, using 3 parts will cause them to drop 2–5 crystals.
Without wearing any crystal armour pieces, getting 2 crystals is more common than getting 3 crystals.
Without wearing any crystal armour pieces, 1-2 crystals are dropped with the main drop and 1 shortly afterwards. The first drop can be boosted with crystal armour.
Crystalline Shapeshifters are featured in the Armies of Gielinor game as a level 5 unit, though they share very little similarities with each other in appearance.
In their melee form, Crystal Shapeshifters have a unique melee attack animation where they seemingly attack three times for the duration of the animation, even though the attack hits only once.
Crystal shapeshifters received the following changes due to player complaints:
Combat and slayer experience was increased.
When a crystal shapeshifter shifted styles prior to the change, the player would have to click on them again as they would have "lost" their target even though they were fighting them. This was changed so that it could change styles without turning into a "new" target.
