Dragon boots are considered the most powerful boots in the game because of their strength bonus which is double that of Rune boots. The only boots that have higher defensive bonuses are Bandos Boots, which have a prayer bonus of 1, but no strength bonus. They were released along with the God Wars Dungeon on 28 August 2007.
The boots require a Defence level of 60 to wear and can be obtained as a drop from Nex and Spiritual Mages (found in the God Wars Dungeon), which require a Slayer level of 83 to kill.
Within hours of their release, prices were between 5,000,000 and 9,000,000 coins. Within a day of their release, prices were between 1,000,000 and 3,000,000 coins. Their release also caused a rapid drop in the price of Rune boots, which fell from 200,000 coins to below 100,000 coins within a week. Due to their low alchemy price, they are commonly lost on death because other items have higher alchemy prices, such as Capes of Achievement, RFD gloves, or Amulets of Glory.
As with all dragon equipment, the Dragon boots cannot be made from raw materials using the Smithing skill. The dragon platebody and the dragon sq shield can be smithed from their component parts.

Trivia
- During the early hours after the release of the boots, players found that they were not a very rare drop. Many higher-levelled players were able to get several pairs per trip. As the day progressed, the price fell rapidly as with most newly-released items.
- In the first few hours after their release, their in-game name was "dragon boost", spelt incorrectly. This was swiftly corrected.
- This item is seen throughout Runescape; most players have this item not only because of its cheap price, but its high strength bonus.
- After the 16 June 2009 update, the price of Dragon boots have fluctuated significantly. This is due to the drop changes and PvP changes done in this update.
- When Bounty Worlds were released, the price of Dragon boots rose from the 280k it had been staying at for a long time to 500k. This was due to increase in demand, but supply keeping around the same as it was before.
- The dragon boots appear to be smaller when worn by a female than when worn by a male.
- The Dragon Boots image is viewed from the front, while the other metal boots icons are seen at an angle, excluding Bandos boots and Frog-leather boots.
- The Dragon Boots, as of December 2010, cost more than the Dragon Platelegs, which have been experiencing a huge drop in price.
