A detailed image of the Dragon kiteshield.

The Dragon kiteshield is the ninth-strongest shield in the game, behind the Blessed Spirit Shield in overall defensive capability. It is the third-strongest kiteshield in the game, behind the chaotic kiteshield and third-age kiteshield. It requires 60 Defence to wear. The shield is a very rare reward from the Dragonkin coffer after defeating the Queen Black Dragon.

The dragon kiteshield gives slightly better bonuses than the dragon square shield, with a +2 greater stab and slash defence bonus, +5 greater crush defense bonus, a +1 greater ranged and summoning defence bonus although 1 less magic defence bonus. It has no quest requirements, unlike the dragon square shield. It is also comparable to the Farseer kiteshield with -2 range attack compared to -15, as well 11 more range defence, and 52 more summoning defence, while also having 11% range absorbtion, however, it has 3/1/2 less in its stab/slash/crush defence and 6 less magic defence.

Trivia

  • The shield's unplanned release was first confirmed definitively in a post by Mod Adj on Jagex's Youtube channel in the summer of 2010.[1] However, the post emphasized that it would not be added until an ideal method of releasing it was developed.
  • The dragon kiteshield has been requested and talked of by players since the introduction of dragon equipment. Jagex referenced this through an April Fools joke on 1 April 2008, during which Diango was said to be selling "dragon kites," a slang term often applied to dragon kiteshields. When Diango was spoken to, it was revealed that these were in fact toy kites bearing a dragon symbol. Diango went on to say that the kites had been ordered a year before their arrival in Draynor Village, but that they had been stolen by someone that had taken the shipment's label, "Dragon Kites," to mean that they were actual shields.
  • Originally the individual images of dragon square shield right and left halves combined would have resembled a kiteshield rather than a square shield. Jagex later updated the item's images after players noticed this. The symbol on the old dragon sq shield strongly resembles the symbol on the Toy kite.
  • The term "dragon kiteshield" has also been applied by players to heraldic rune kiteshields bearing a dragon crest. These are made of runite, however, rather than dragon.
  • An anagram of dragon kiteshield, "a soldiered knight", was mentioned during thes Chaos Elemental Letter 16, hinting that it would be dropped by the Queen Black Dragon, which was confirmed in the May 2012 Behind the Scenes.
  • On the day of release, the dragon kiteshield had an initial Grand Exchange price of 800,000 coins. However, the shield, like most newly introduced items, is currently expected to spike rapidly.
