To catch Rocktail you will need Living Minerals instead of fishing bait. It was once possible to lose your rod from random events, but after the 25 February 2009 updates, it is now impossible for this to happen. Free players can use it to catch Sardines, Herrings, and Pikes. Members can use Blamish snail slime on it to turn it into an Oily fishing rod. The Oily fishing rod can only be used to catch Lava Eels.
