Food, in RuneScape, is what enables the player to regain hitpoints, although some foods may have other effects as well. Food can be obtained through the Cooking skill, as a drop from certain monsters, from some random events such as the Sandwich Lady random event, from other players, or from non-player characters.
There are several kinds of food, such as fish and meat, bread, cakes, pies, and even pizza. Some foods, such as pies, cakes and pizzas, have two or more "bites" or "slices". There are also foods which grows from the ground such as potatoes, cabbages, and onions; those items can be put into baskets and sacks. There are also special foods such as spinach roll and baguette gained from random events. Lastly, there are holiday items food such as pumpkin and easter egg. It is strongly recommended that a player does not eat holiday items, as some are rare and extremely valuable.
Some foods have effect on skills other than hitpoints. For example, wine makes your hitpoints go up, though it has a downside. If a player drinks a jug of wine and then goes to the skills tab, it can be seen that the player's attack level temporarily decreased, while the strength level increased. The negative effect eventually wears off, though, and the affected stat is back to normal within some time. Most of such effects do not stack.
Common foods
Here are some common foods. A complete list of cooked foods can be found in the Cooking skill page.

Notes
When players are selecting the right food for the next venture, there are a few factors to keep in mind:
- Effectiveness: If players know exactly what they're going to be facing, they should try to find food that heals for more than their max hit in one bite. E.g., a TzHaar-Ket will generally hit 15. Therefore, shark and monkfish are adequate while lobsters might prove ineffective in that scenario.
- Cost: How much will healing each hitpoint cost? Sharks are The time allocated for running scripts has expired. coins each and heal 20 hitpoints. Monkfish heal 16 hitpoints and cost The time allocated for running scripts has expired. coins, making them more cost effective. Also, what foods can be made on by the player for free? Is it worth it to invest the time to do so?
- Space: How much space will the food take up in player's inventory? Is it better to carry multiple bite foods such as a basket of strawberries or single bite foods like monkfish? Is space important enough to justify taking less food or more expensive, high-healing food?
- Restoration: Monkfish cost The time allocated for running scripts has expired. coins and heal 16. Potatoes with cheese heal 16 also. Depending on the GE price, it may cost less to use potatoes with cheese over monkfish.
- Time: How much time will it take to eat your food? Is it better to take high healing manta rays (Heals 22 - 1 bite) or the much cheaper summer pies (Heals 11 per bite - 2 bites)?
Trivia
- Purple Sweets are the only stackable food in the game, healing 1-3 health and restoring 10% run energy.
- The mouse cursor for eating (After 2 September updates) represents a half-eaten apple, although you can't eat apples in RuneScape.
- Food is mostly obtained from killing somethingbut in some creatures this is rare.
