Food, in RuneScape, is what enables the player to regain life points, although some foods may have additional or different effects as well. Food can be obtained through the Cooking and Farming skills, as a drop from certain monsters, from other players, or from non-player characters. The highest healing food for non-members is a swordfish; for members it is the sailfish soup with 1 bite. However the fastest healing food for members with multiple bites are summer pies which only takes 0.6 seconds per bite (three times faster than some types of food).
A certain Constitution level is required to gain the maximum benefit from eating certain tiers of food. For example, at level 10 Constitution, a rocktail will only heal 250 life points but will heal 2300 life points instead at level 95. The maximum health recovery from eating food can be determined by multiplying the player's Constitution level by 25. At a constitution level of 50, players can heal up to 1250 life points per bite of food that has a maximum value of that or more. The required level to eat any food can also be determined by taking the maximum healing value of that food and dividing it by 25. If the player's constitution level is lower than this number, then they will be restricted to healing the maximum for their level.
Some foods affect stats other than life points. Wine increases life points, though it temporarily lowers the drinker's Attack level while their Strength level temporarily increases. Beer raises Strength while reducing Attack. The negative effects eventually wear off and the affected stats go back to normal in time. Most effects do not stack.

Types of food
There are many types of food such as fish, meat, bread, cakes, pies, and pizza. There are also foods which grow from the ground such as potatoes, cabbages, and onions; these items can be put into baskets and sacks. Players could also get food as a treasure trail reward in the form of purple sweets or biscuits. Lastly, there are holiday items food such as pumpkins and Easter eggs. It is strongly recommended that players do not eat holiday items as they are rare and extremely valuable.
Most types of food can be found in one of the following articles:
Notes
Factors to consider when choosing the right food:
- Players should try to find food that heals more in one bite than the max hit of dangerous monsters they train on. This should not pose a problem for players who train on much weaker monsters than they are.
- Some items require inventory space, like baskets of strawberries to take out strawberries. Monsters drop items that require space, so consider the value and frequency of drops when bringing food.
- Try to avoid eating during combat if it is not necessary. Not only does it prevent an attack from being used, it also uses some adrenaline. Some areas have aggressive monsters that hit hard and foods that take multiple bites, like cake, may cause problems.
- Some foods, such as cakes, require two or more servings. This can easily be remedied by storing the food in a Cornucopia during combat as this action does not interrupt attacks and allows the food to be eaten at once.
- Eating one piece of pie only takes 0.6 seconds as opposed to other foods which normally take 1.8 seconds (3x longer), making high-level pies valuable where fast healing is necessary. The limit is 330 life points with summer pies.
- Items such as expensive spices, shark's tooth necklace, and Necklace of gluttony can increase the potency of healing from eating certain types of food.
Trivia
- Purple Sweets, magnetic minnows and biscuits are the only stackable food in the game. Purple sweets heal 200 life points and restore 20% run energy per serving, and biscuits restore heal 250 life points and 10 prayer points each.
- The mouse cursor for eating (after 2 September updates) represents a half-eaten apple, although you cannot eat apples in RuneScape (except rotten apples which do not heal anything).
- The animations for eating food were updated with the release of the Dungeoneering skill.
- In Daemonheim, it is possible to "feed" a fellow party member by using a piece of food on them, which makes them perform the eating animation and heal, using the food from your inventory. This is only possible outside of Daemonheim when on a coop slayer task with the ability bought at a slayer master with coop points.
- On German servers, the old eating animation is still in effect.
- Most foods take 3 game ticks to eat; exceptions are purple sweets and pies.
