Recently, Ameobea10 has been, through Nucleobot, adding item creation guides to the majority of Dungeoneering equipment pages. An example, from novite 2h sword:

  1. Obtain a hammer either by buying it from the Smuggler or by some other method.
  2. Find a Furnace and an Anvil.
  3. Obtain four Novite Ores either by buying them from the smuggler, by mining them from a Novite rock, or by some other means.
  4. Use the ores on the furnace and choose to make them into Novite Bars.
  5. Use the bars on the anvil and choose to make a Novite Two-Handed Sword.

I do not like these guides, and would like a discussion on whether we should have them. My reasons:

  • Meticulously outlining each step to create the item is redundant and unnecessary. It's quite enough for an article to say something like this instead: "This item can be made at an anvil from 4 novite bars with level 8 Smithing, granting 56 experience." Ameobea10 states on my talk page that he or she is filling out stubby articles, but lack of content is not necessarily a bad thing so long as the article is complete. Excessive content, on the other hand, is generally to be avoided.
  • Also on my talk page, Ameobea10 says that capitalizing the names of items in that manner (such as "Novite Bar" instead of "novite bar") is correct. I disagree. It's well established that most item names should not be capitalized except at the beginning of a sentence. This is, quite simply, grammar.
  • The article about a novite 2h sword does not need information about how to create novite bars. That's what the novite bar article is for.
  • I don't think the guides are particularly well-written. "...by some other means" isn't very descriptive or encyclopedic, for example.

I would much prefer that, in keeping with tradition, we simply have a line in the item's introductory paragraph stating the number of bars it needs, the required Smithing level, and the experience you get from it. That's all the info that's necessary.

Discussion

Support removing new guides - Redundant information is redundant.

What UCG said - About as ridiculous as our forums are right now. But those are a different matter entirely. Still, point stands. 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 01:06, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

Support - It's redundant, and not even particularly well written. However, I would like to see that all creatable items have some sort of instructions in the paragraph. 222 talk 01:30, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Per all. I think it looks rather out of place actually. Omg

Neutral - Probably not necessary here, but very handy for mystery stuff like chilli potato. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 06:40, July 9, 2011 (UTC)

Except for the fact that the first sentence of that article explains how to do it.

But who knows how to make chilli con carne? This is a better example. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 05:23, July 11, 2011 (UTC)
They can go to that article, to which there is a wikilink. The first sentence says how to make it. >_>

Support - Redundent information is redundent. Also, there's all the errors that Nucleobot has created, such as turning arrowtips into arrowheads and pretty much stating that coal is not neccessary for metalwork, as well as claiming alloys can be found as ores Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 19:39, July 16, 2011 (UTC)

Support - It's redundant and error-ridden. --AnselaJonla 23:36, July 21, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Is the proposal only for Smithing? Other skills require simple and to the point guides on how to do something. Without this, it will confuse a viewer of this wiki. --Youdead0016:36, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

This is to stop Nucleobot from adding these guides, and to remove the guides that were added by the bot. Items with significant complexity to making them either already have a guide or have guides linked from them, like the chilli con carne example given above. Comment/Oppose - OK, so I see that no one likes my idea. Fine, I'll stop. It's what the community wants. I'm not going against that. Now the question is if you want me to delete all the guides I've already made, or just leave them. I don't really care, I was just trying to add stuff. Honestly, I think it helps, but that doesn't really matter. I just want to say though that if you don't like it because of the errors, I'll fix them gladly; I'm still getting used to AWB and would gladly fix anything you point out. One last thing: I made these guides because in a previous yew grove page people didn't want to merge pages such as the unstrung bows and the strung bows. For example, look at Grave_creeper_shortbow_(u). Without my addition, the content wouldn't even be 1/4 of the length of the infobox, and it doesn't even have a stub tag! I think that for articles like that, a how-to guide helps add something to the article, and also helps to increase the amount of in-game usefulness if supplies. again, if you still want me to stop and clean up after myself, I will. Just listen to my idea. I don't really care either way.

16:36, July 26, 2011 (UTC)
That doesn't matter. As long as it has all available information with quality, then it's fine.

Closed - Nucleobot's "How To Make This Item" edits will be reverted through the use of AWB.
