Back in June, I created this page to list ongoing discussions and requests in the community. I believe that this is a useful feature that will collectively organise our many requests and proposals, which can otherwise be hard to keep up with. Cåm then created his own version of the page in August and has since been diligently improving on the idea via DPL. I'd now like to propose that we create a hybrid of both pages for the RuneScape: namespace, to be located at RuneScape:Active discussions, or RS:AD. The proposed page can be seen here.

Happy Holidays. Ronan Talk 18:22, December 27, 2012 (UTC)

Strong support - It's definitely useful. One suggestion: Get rid of the archived threads under "Yew Grove", they don't belong there. Smithing (talk | contribs) 18:37, December 27, 2012 (UTC)

Disagree. It's useful in seeing the conclusions of recent threads without having to actually go to the Grove, and has been limited to the five latest by Cam for efficiency and to conserve space. Ronan Talk 19:20, December 27, 2012 (UTC)
I agree that it is beneficial to add recently archived threads, but my problem with doing this is it would render the page title misleading. Now that I think about it, wouldn't it be better to just merge the proposed page with the Community Portal? They both seem to serve a similar purpose and, since the Community Portal has been around for 7 years, these discussions are more likely to garner views. Smithing (talk | contribs) 22:37, December 27, 2012 (UTC)
They're different topics. I'd considered this, but as RS:CP is more of a user-centered page for displaying information not so much to do with consensus (such as birthdays etc.), I thought against it. Regardless, it would make the page far too long and tedious. RS:AD's main function is convenience. Ronan Talk 22:48, December 27, 2012 (UTC)
The last 5 archived threads is much more for my own convenience than anything else. I would however consider recently archived discussions relevant on the page. Even though I check every new comment on every discussion, I do not always know how the thread has been closed or how it has been implemented. With this I don't need to go to the Yew Grove page itself to check through the last 50 archived threads and see how they were closed. It's designed to be a quick check thing (mainly for use with wikiaphone as loading multiple pages is a pain sometimes), rather than something like RuneScape:Forum Archives (which still needs a lot of work) which will eventually be the full directory.

Comment - add "noresultsheader = " to your dpls. MolMan 19:48, December 27, 2012 (UTC)

Just vandalised your page for myself (only did a preview) and you'll need to remove any suppresserrors when you add noresultsheader = <div align=center>There are no current $$$$$$</div>. wink. MolMan 21:33, January 3, 2013 (UTC)

Strong Support - This is by far the most legendary page on the wiki. Oh wait, there's recent changes... :s. Moving it to the project space is a good idea. Haidro (talk) 19:52, December 27, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Thank goodness, I can finally get rid of the iframe of Cam's discussion page off my userpage. Hair 20:18, December 27, 2012 (UTC)

Strong Oppose - One of the cornerstones of this wiki is a so-called "pocket consensus", where you get to do whatever you want as long as nobody shows up to oppose it, because nobody knows the discussion is taking place. Sure, there were a few close calls but so far this has been working spectacularly. Nobody opposed the discussion on Talk:Ice Queen to reinstate hilites, so I'll get to do that! I'll get around to it one of these days. My point is this is one of the wiki's most appealing aspects. Removing it will be detrimental to sneaky admins unethically getting their way. Wat. 02:25, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I'll change a few things such as noresultsheader as recommended above, some of the dpl needs condensing down into one call rather than 3 (see featured content), attempt to do the equivalent of DPLforum's addcreationdate=true (if possible) and I'd rather use some classes in MediaWiki:Common.css rather than inline styling. Shouldn't be too hard to do. If/When the page is created it would also make sense to add it to the AJAX auto-refresh pages seeing as the Yew Grove is one of the pages currently on said list.

Strong support - I actually came across one of your subpages recently, and I thought that it looked really good. I like the idea of this because I'll check it every so often and see what's going on. 02:25, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Let's get rid of RuneScape:Page maintenance since it is covered on the active discussions page. Hair 04:35, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Support - This too. 07:28, December 28, 2012 (UTC)
I also support this, but can we move the auto refresh onto the new page :3? Haidro (talk) 08:57, December 28, 2012 (UTC)
Forgot to raise this in the proposal. As it would be rendered wholly unnecessary following this, it should logically follow that it should be shut down. Ronan Talk 10:36, December 28, 2012 (UTC)
@Haidro: Yes, very easy to add another page to the auto-refresh, just by adding another object to the array. Hair 21:08, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Psycho's stupid, mental case of a comment brings up a decent point. Can you consider adding another section for the 10 most recently edited Talk pages? MolMan 18:15, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Will the list include user talk pages, or for that matter, should it? 21:05, December 28, 2012 (UTC)
It'd be flooded with vandalism templates if it were. MolMan 21:07, December 28, 2012 (UTC)

Hey, I resent that you don't respect my opinion. Do I need to invoke SOW? I have equal say as everyone else! You are marginalizing my contribution and I don't take kindly to that. Robot talkSilver bar.png 22:34, December 28, 2012 (UTC)
SOW protects opinions from being affected by their proposer. It doesn't protect a stupid opinion from being useless. MolMan 15:41, December 30, 2012 (UTC)
It's possible, but 10 doesn't seem particularly useful, and much more than that is going to drown the page. Perhaps add that feature to a different page? Some user talk pages are more useful than others for notification of proper discussion, but as the most of it is unnecessary for the vast majority of us to view I would be inclined to limit it to talk pages excluding user talk, organised under different headings for each namespace. You never know, it might start making us pay attention to talk pages again.

Maybe a subpage of the proposed page for talk pages? Maybe a separate page for the most recently discussed talk pages could work. 19:35, January 3, 2013 (UTC)

Update - After spending most of the day working on it, I now have dpl versions of every discussion outlined in Ronan's original proposal which can be seen here, with the an example of uotm [[here. I felt it too bold to start implementing the template, see uotm, used for uotm before this was closed, hence the separate page. A similar template, see createdate, has been created to allow extraction of the creation date of the page, to be used for RfAs, RfCMs and RfRs, possibly extending to other discussions should consensus dictate. createdate needs to be manually applied to each of the open discussions as well as the preloads for each discussion: RFA, RFB, RFR and RFCM. Naturally, the manual application is a one off. When createdate has been implemented, the format parameter will need to be changed for each discussion that uses it, although that shouldn;t be a major task.

I have yet to write the CSS for the table classes. Another point Ronan raised, is the use of the noresultsheader parameter (The "There are no requests at this time" you see below headers that have no current discussions). It looks neater to use suppresserrors = true (which removes the message altogether). As a note to myself, the code for when createdate is implemented can be found here.

Discussions page, pages using createdate and uotm example all converted to using classes. The CSS can be seen here under the comment marked For Forum:Active discussions ignoring the part labelled Personal styling.

Support - It's very useful, and it'll help in the building of consensus for some of the discussions that don't get as much input as others. I've been seeking one of these for a while, I think I made a thread a while back asking for something like this, and people just drilled it into the ground. RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 07:12, January 7, 2013 (UTC)

And this is why the forum archives page is useful! I remember seeing that proposal, actually. Helping dead requests is the forum you're looking for. Nice to see this proposal gaining some traction, and actually likely to be passing 19:12, January 7, 2013 (UTC)

Bump - As is to be expected, talk has slowed down here. The page has been moved to RuneScape:Active discussions. Any further comments regarding suggestions for improving the page are welcomed. Ronan Talk 18:17, January 10, 2013 (UTC)

Can we get this on the recent changes links? MolMan 20:15, January 11, 2013 (UTC)

When it's closed we can add it to Recent Changes and the Nav bar. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 21:00, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
YAY! Saw no mention of it, so I figured I'd ask. MolMan 21:02, January 11, 2013 (UTC)
I prefer Cåm's active discussion page. Hair 02:56, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
So do I >.<. Haidro (talk) 06:08, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Uotm can now be automatically tallied up, with use of uotm and vote (different use to what it's RFD was for). If no one objects, I'd like to use this instead of the current clunky manual updated method, the result of which can then be transcluded for use on the proposed page.

SUGG Cån you add request for closure? And if you do, perhaps use include = to add the reason it is being requested? MolMan 15:53, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

This request for closure is complete A user has requested closure for Active discussions. Request complete. The reason given was: Proposed page already implemented, obvious consensus. Further improvements can be made on the page or through RS:AR if required.

As for the alterations to the navbar and recent changes, here are some handy links respectively: MediaWiki:Wiki-navigation, MediaWiki:Recentchangestext.
