Forums: Yew Grove > Better Yew Grove Archives

Our current yew grove archives, let's face it, really suck. It's barely an archive! It's nothing other than a huge category that serves little purpose for finding important policies that have been discussed. So let's take some time to tidy it up and make it useful.

REWORDING: Make a better archive by date of closure specifically by month.

Disscussion

Support- I think it would be best to separate it by year with a link on yew grove, on that year's page, a link to each month it was archived and all forums on that page (Yew Grove > Year > Month > Archived forums). I also volunteer to do the work, if this passes. Hair 04:32, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Support - It would be quite useful to view Yew Grove threads in order of their closure.

Support - Sounds like a logical improvement. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 07:14, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Conditional support - I will support on the following conditions:

  1. We know who/what will do the work. There are currently 1584 threads in the archive, and even if it won't be that much work for every thread, it will add up.
  2. There'll be three different archive "levels"
    1. The current archives will be kept for people that don't know anything about the closure date of a certain thread
    2. There'll be an archive for each year (not divided into months) for people who know the year but not month
    3. There'll be archives for each month, for people that do know about when the thread was closed.

Otherwise, I oppose. —The preceding signed comment was added by I Am Me (talk contribs). 08:51, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Hair volunteered to do it. And you want to have a page that splits into year, and then another one that's year and month? What's the point of having two seperate pages?

I volunteer to do it the easy way: putting this in Template:Forumheader:
{{#ifeq:{{{archive|}}}|true|[[Category:Forum archives by date|{{#time:o m d|{{{date|}}}}}]]|}}
(that time format looks like "2024 04 19") That will sort it by date in that category, but all forum threads will all still be in the "2" part (categories always sort by the first character, and within those lists they sort by the rest; 2006 and 2012 will both appear under "2"). We could also use {{#time:y m d|{{{date|}}}}} (24 04 19) to let it use the last 2 characters (so 12 instead of 2012) which would at least seperate the earlier-than-2010 forums from the later-than-2010 forums. But, this is a problem with sorting within the categories, not in who will do what, so I can say all can be done with that single line of code in the template. No need for a bot spamming the change. Comment - Surely you can rig up AWB to group them by year and month considering all the threads have the date closed in the Forumheader? 222 talk 10:43, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Nub, don't editconflict me in explaining how it can be done much easier :o JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:54, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Support - would be nice to have a date sorted archive too. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:54, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I just felt the urge to comment and say that I don't see this being useful at all. I've never needed to back through old threads and have gone crazy because they're not categorised by date. What annoys me is when I'm looking for an archived thread about a particular topic, and I can't remember the exact name. But that can't really be solved. Anyway, I won't oppose as it appears there are people who may make use of this. Chicken7 >talk 12:36, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I agree with Chicken. How the heck am I supposed to remember when something was closed? I think a better search function would prioritize over this if it were possible. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 12:39, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

How the heck am I supposed to remember when something was closed? Category:Forum archives by date closed Wink Hair 14:49, January 23, 2012 (UTC)
Not useful since there is no search function. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 20:12, January 23, 2012 (UTC)
What's the point of using that to find when something was closed when it gives you a link to what you were looking for anyways? ._. bad_fetustalk 21:10, January 23, 2012 (UTC)
A better search function would help, but how are we meant to do that? We can't simply redesign Wikia's search engine. The only option we really have is to use advanced search, selecting only the "Forum" namespace. Chicken7 >talk 01:55, January 24, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - I agree with Fergs here. When I'm searching through the archives I go on the title of the forum, not on the date closed. I only consider the date when I'm selecting the pre 2010 or post 2010 archive. Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 21:44, January 23, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Seems to me like a logical improvement, how widespread use of this improvement would be, I dont know. Also, the search function idea discussed above is sound. Raglough 01:25, January 24, 2012 (UTC)
