Hello everyone,

[[Special:Chat]] has the potencial to be a great resource, but I feel that it is being underplayed. I've been trying some things on other wikis, and these seem to work well;

  • Adding an ad for chat under the "over 9000 pages on this wiki" module.
  • Allowing monobook users to access it via a link on the sidebar. Monobook users can use it through this link.

Anyways, feel free to suggest more ideas/discuss these. Please do not support/oppose yet, but rather just discuss the benefits and downsides of suggestions. Thanks,

Discussion

Comment - Sounds good. It would be nice if it was used more since most people don't want to read a page to figure out how to use IRC. User:TyA/sig 20:05, July 1, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - It does have a lot of potential, and I think it could be beneficial to get the word out there more. Putting it under the page total might be an odd location though. Like "welcome to the rs wiki, we have 9001 pages, click here to chat!". >.< Maybe we could make a box (that doesn't cover up half the page, which I have disabled in css). Also, when I first saw this thread pop up, I thought you were to propose that all first letters of every chat line entered be auto-capitalized like in RuneScape. <.<

Comment - The reason I don't use Chat is because I still experience really bad connection issues.

That, and IRC is where it's at. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 05:31, July 2, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Just because you don't like Chat doesn't mean we shouldn't use it. Many of our users obviously don't want to use IRC, otherwise we'd have thousands of people in IRC at all times. If we can get more people to join Chat we have a chance of converting some of the viewers into editors and more editors is a good thing. User:TyA/sig 04:26, July 3, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - Ads will only drive away chatters, and slow down computers. Youdead0021:45, July 3, 2011 (UTC)

Why would I bother writing stuff if people don't read it? What part of " Please do not support/oppose yet, but rather just discuss the benefits and downsides of suggestions" do I need to clarify even more than I already have?

Really, there's no difference between supporting/opposing and just "discussing" besides putting support/oppose in bold. Just sayin'. User:C Teng/sig 03:04, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
Yes, there is. With most discussions, people take one quick look at the proposal and then support or oppose per what their initial impressions are. I'd like some actually intelligent discussion here, rather than people just coming in and, say, opposing an entire idea in one line obviously without reading the entire discussion.

Comment - *Ahem* Okay, sorry to offend, but I'm afraid the perspective of the proposal was relayed to my brain in the following text: Place ads in chat with over 9000 articles. I apologize and I will now think this through. And Ajr, control your temper! --Youdead0000:06, July 5, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not angry, never am at things on the internet... only mildly frustrated.

Comment' - What's the downside to this? Might as well try to get users into the chat... Dragon 2h sword oldCallofduty4 Talk 23:40, July 6, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - Bringing more users into the on-site chat may help to greater involve editors looking for a more social element. --Aburnett(Talk) 00:58, July 7, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I don't see how an ad for the chat and not to other websites would drive away potential chatters.Vommack 01:04, July 7, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I just wanted to point out that the word "ad" might be misleading as people might confuse it with an ad to generate money for the site. Farming cape (t) Lil cloud 9 Talk

Possibly. To clarify then, by ad I mean a link to chat, basically, with a sentance of what it's about.

Closed - Consensus was to implement some kind of ad for chat. Done in Common.js. Leave comments on the talk page of Chat.js for changes or improvements. Ryan PM 07:49, July 8, 2011 (UTC)
