Forums: Yew Grove > Closing the RSWP

As much as I like the RSWP, it can only function on the condition that people actually submit to it. However, over the past few months, little content has been submit. I blame no one for this, because frankly, few people with the time to write an article are interested, and few people who are interested have the time to write. In fact, all the submissions are generally written by one of three-or-so people.

I just had this conversation with Cook. Our last-ditch effort to revive the post failed when nobody viewed the RSWP submission page (which has several links on the main page).

[18:16] <Stelercus> I think the RSWP is dead.
[18:18] <Cook_Me_Plox> I was looking at the numbers, they're not good.
[18:19] <Stelercus> So what do we do?
[18:19] <Cook_Me_Plox> Hmm...
[18:19] <Cook_Me_Plox> if we were to get it revived we would want to shuffle the box somewhere else
[18:20] <Cook_Me_Plox> Like I said I think people have developed a blindness for that spot
[18:21] <Cook_Me_Plox> but at this point I don't know there's much that can be done without starting all over
[18:21] <Stelercus> Problem is, even if everyone knew, who has the time to write for it?
[18:21] <Cook_Me_Plox> people are just not interested in it, at least in its current format
[18:22] <Stelercus> We tried to change the format. People are not submitting either way.
[18:22] <Cook_Me_Plox> what do you want to happen?
[18:23] <Stelercus> for people to start submitting.
[18:23] <Stelercus> What do I think will happen? The RSWP will whither away until we kill it.
[18:24] <Cook_Me_Plox> the point is people are not submitting. 98 views on a prime spot on the main page in 15 days is not good.

I'm sure the only person who wants the RSWP to stay more than me is User:Jack Spiral1. Given that, there's no use running from the fact that the RSWP is dead.

I'm sorry to say, I think you may be right. Perhaps we could just start submitting work to the Runescape Tipit Times? That would be okay, surely?  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ZamorakRevan (talk).

Oppose - I didn't even know this existed! I think it just should be advertised more, because, after reading some editorials, I'm quite excited about writing one myself. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 14:00, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - It's certainly not completely dead yet, and personally, I find it enjoyable. Moreover, as seen by Fswe's reaction above, there are people that still care about it. Also, it's not hurting anything. Sure, I don't mind if you remove it from the mainpage, but I believe it should stay until there is absolutely nobody visiting it - which I don't think will happen. Just because it's not the most popular project shouldn't mean it should get closed right away. bad_fetustalk 16:17, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, actually I oppose removing it from the mainpage too. The newest editorial has 846 votes in it, which means 846 people actually read it. That's not few at all. Now, I'm aware that it has been ages since that last editorials release, but then again, proven by fswe's reaction above, some people don't even know about it. I say we advertise it more for a while, and if it's still inactive, then we can reconsider. bad_fetustalk 16:24, March 22, 2011 (UTC)
The wiki post has had its own spot on the main page for quite a while now. There's also a link to the wiki post's submissions page on the wiki news template.  Tien  20:36, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

Support - What's gone is gone. User:Swizzl3d/Sig 17:59, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

Support - If something has to be removed from the main page, then (I hate to say this) there is no better candidate than the wiki post. As an initial supporter and "chief editor" of the wiki post, I had high expectations for the project. However, it has clearly been dying out for the past several months, especially if only three people have submitted content. The state of the wiki post becomes even clearer when we realize that we even need this notice to goad people to write for it. It's great that people are interested in reading the articles. However, there are few people interested in regularly writing articles.  Tien  20:36, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - I actually enjoy reading these articles and would hate to see this go. I wish that there were more frequent entries, but it seems that there's not enough people that want to write the articles. I have considered writing for the RSWP myself, but I just thought it was weird how we needed to 'email' it to some dark hole. I think it would be better if these was a page dedicated to submissions, just so...you know you're not the only one writing for the RSWP. *shrug* Farming cape (t) Lil cloud 9 Talk 11:35, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

And so you know what topics people are writing about, so you don't duplicate it. Farming cape (t) Lil cloud 9 Talk 11:38, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Sad to say, but just like other projects in the project namespace, another one comes to pass. If it was because of just reader drops I wouldn't want to close this, but when both readership and editors on this project had fallen then one would say it would take that much more work on certain individuals to keep up and running. Maybe it'll be revived again in a few years, but until more people want to participate, I see this as the end of the RSWP. Ryan PM 15:50, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

Strong oppose - Whoa, I came to look at what's been happening here, and it looks like this wiki is discontinuing everything. If it's not working out the way it is, change how it works. Get users to become regular columnists, as well as letting users submit editorials. Write stories about recent updates, or quest series, or any of the 17,000 things we have pages for. Work the WP more like a real paper - have stories about Jagex's updates, interviews with players giving their thoughts. Anything. But this is one of the last places users can give their thoughts, where people might actually read it. Lack of viewings is probably down to lack of regular updates to it. This is just like the forums - some users actually really enjoy it, and closing it will put an end to that. It's getting views, even if they're not plentiful, so that proves some people still look at it. Improve it, don't close it. User:Real Not Pure/Signature 17:47, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

  • "If it's not working out the way it is, change how it works." See Forum:Improving the RSWP.
  • "Get users to become regular columnists, as well as letting users submit editorials." Users can already do that. They aren't, and we can't force them.
  • "Write stories about recent updates, or quest series, or any of the 17,000 things we have pages for." We tried the first of those for a while. Users are not choosing to do the second two, and again, we can't force them.
  • "Work the WP more like a real paper - have stories about Jagex's updates, interviews with players giving their thoughts. Anything." See previous explanation.
  • "But this is one of the last places users can give their thoughts, where people might actually read it." I was planning to leave the RSWP page open for people to leave links to their userspace. It's not worth having any formal administration anymore. If it comes back to life in this form, anyone would be free to request Editor-in-Chief "status" on the Yew Grove.
  • "Lack of viewings is probably down to lack of regular updates to it." Regular updates are down due to lack of regular submissions.
  • "This is just like the forums - some users actually really enjoy it, and closing it will put an end to that." I enjoyed it, too, when there was something there to enjoy. The difference is that we can bring the RSWP back, but not the php forums.
  • "It's getting views, even if they're not plentiful, so that proves some people still look at it." The articles that are already there will not go away, but the way things are going, new articles are not going to appear.
  • "Improve it, don't close it." There is one way to improve it -- one. People have to write and submit to the post. Nobody on this wiki can force anyone to do that, and nobody is doing it.
The post used to receive regular submissions, though that is no longer the case. The number of submissions temporarily jump when an attempt is made to improve it, though none of them last more than a month or so. Cook and I attempted to boost interest by linking to the submission page on the main page. However, very few people even looked at the page, let alone submit anything or contact me about it. There is no interest in submitting, only interest in reading. Unfortunately, the second is totally reliant on the first. There's nothing we can do to help that. User:Stelercus/Signature 19:00, March 23, 2011 (UTC)
And closing the rswp helps the wiki how, exactly? Even if the activity is low, it's most certainly better than not having at all. bad_fetustalk 19:17, March 23, 2011 (UTC)
So nobody has to worry about maintaining it. User:Stelercus/Signature 20:15, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I would be very happy if the RSWP came back, but it has to be for a long time. This can't just be something where after the thread starts some people start to care about it, but after a week or two they lose interest. Unless you guys are ready to contribute long-term, we need to close it. ʞooɔ 16:22, March 24, 2011 (UTC)

Well, if several people would write once a month, that's be good. I think it need more advertising on the main page, an introduction on the project page and perhaps also small rewards for authors as extra encouragement. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 17:08, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
More advertising? It's got something on the sitenotice, a box of its own..what else can we do? ʞooɔ 17:37, March 24, 2011 (UTC)
Make flashing ads for it@@@@ Liek, someone sees an ad for pills, they click it, BAM, they are on RSWP. bad_fetustalk 19:25, March 24, 2011 (UTC)

Also, if I have to to keep it going for his sake and for all those who wish to read and contribute, I would write articles for it.
