Forums: Yew Grove > Featured Article Videos

As of today, Wikia has decided to start implementing featured videos at the top of various articles across the wiki, starting with those that are most popular. These are visible on Money making guide and Treasure Trails/Guide/Coordinates. They can contain pre-roll ads if you're not using any kind of adblock software, and auto-play (with no audio).

We'd like to stress that these videos are not created by us, nor did we ask for them to be implemented. We have contacted Wikia about them, but it's completely beyond our control. This thread serves as a place to give feedback on and discuss them.

We have created a messagebox template that we will put on articles that we spot using these videos to clarify that they aren't our videos, with a link to this thread.

Hiding the videos

Due to Wikia's Terms of Use, it would be a violation for us to remove the videos using JavaScript and CSS site-wide for all of our users. Instead, if you have a Wikia account, follow the steps below if you would like to hide these videos yourself:

$('.featured-video-wrapper').remove();
  • (Optional) Go to this page (to hide across Wikia) or Special:MyPage/common.css (to hide on this wiki)
  • (Optional) Edit the page, paste this code in on a new line and save:
.featured-video-wrapper {
    display: none;
}

Alternatively, you could try blocking the element using Adblock or similar extensions.

Discussion

Ugh - They're terrible. The scripts are so bad it isn't even funny. The narrator clearly has no game knowledge. These videos will ruin articles because of their outdated information (see the MMG video and you'll understand why). We don't want them, we didn't ask for them, but we got them.

Wikia won't be working with communities on scripts, so we don't even have any input at all. https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 22:23, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose - <--- Not like that does anything, but I'd like to emphasise my contempt for these featured videos. The two I've seen so far were so poorly made, it was as if the author had little to no knowledge of the game. I don't want them here, or on the OSRS Wiki. EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER

As for the OSRS Wiki, we too will use the messagebox template with a link to this same thread, should we spot any featured videos on our articles. -- Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 22:34, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

It's so bad - The videos are the first thing people will see when they get on the page. If they don't have an adblocker installed, that means a 30-second autoplaying ad above the article content. Secondly, the videos are bad. Like, really bad. The person narrating them have no idea what they're talking about and are just quoting somewhat related wiki articles, and poorly at that (how do you not know what minutes are regarding latitude and longtitude?!). It's just a bad idea all around, but because Wikia seems to not care about the input of its communities and only about money, it's very likely nothing will change and we won't have a say in the matter. move to gamepedia when Lily of the valley ThePsionic White Rabbit 22:41, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Also @Wikia stop stealing your background videos from youtube - either create your own or have someone who plays the game make them for you. This is just distasteful. (And yes, I asked Moto, who made the video on the MMG page. He didn't give permission.) Lily of the valley ThePsionic White Rabbit 05:26, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose - I started to watch the MMG one to see what they were like, and... ugh. Even if you don't have any knowledge of RS, it doesn't make sense. "There are two main ways to grow your money reserves in RuneScape. The first being: hourly profit." Wut. That's not a way to make money, that's how effective your method is!

The correct answer to that sentence was: Slayer. 0/10 update. -- F-Lambda (talk) 22:58, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Level 7 Zamic wizard - How can they be this bad. Just, wow.

I think the level of care that was put into the videos is most clearly shown at about 20 seconds into the coordinate one. She says it takes 2 minutes to travel one game square, which may easily fly under your radar unless you realise that she's talking about 2 minutes of time, and the article is talking about 2 minutes of distance (longitude/latitude). Just like coordinates works IRL. Two sentences earlier she mentions that it works like IRL. I just... ugh.

No one gave a shit when making these videos and it makes us look bad. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 23:00, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

I DONT LIKE THIS - I couldn't even watch the first 10 seconds of the MMG one when she said "all currency is calculated using current Grand Market prices. Jesus effing Christ. These are terrible because even if the videos weren't out of date, they will be eventually. And as others have already pointed out she clearly didn't know what she was talking about. The whole point of Wikis are so that people passionate about something can share their up to date knowledge on it! I don't know much about the wiki higher ups and exactly what influence we have with each other (but I'm guessing its very one sided) but I find it incredibly stupid that they would force something on us that defies what makes wikis great in the first place. </rant> Superiosity the DragonriderQuick chat button: User:Superiosity/Signature chat 23:17, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Damnit wikia! - Did ye ken a single vial of water costs 4000 coins? At least according to the video. Nae 10 coins, 4000 coins! By Guthix, they're openly distributing misinformation! Probably just going to consider pulling the plug on visiting all wikia sites then if this is the level of incompetence they intend to put in. - I'm sure this sounds like the standard "quitting runescape" you might hear someone say. But given how much trouble wikia fansite specific editors/contributors already have to deal with unnecessary edits and even malicious edits ... a person for Wikia stated that despite their already hectic schedule, they are going to create these videos without any input from the local wikia editors/moderators on their own time? Yet the local wikia editors usually have 10000000 times more knowledge of the local wiki content than the people making the videos? ................ so are they forcing us to create our own videos for every page? do we need to create false traffic on pages that we don't really care about (ie Thingy) so they waste their time on those pages? Sure you guys have seen things ... but the quality of these videos is so bad it actually takes away from the quality of the articles ......... Frankly, if they don't pull the videos out after a while, I'll ping Salix in game to revoke my in game title, and just change my status on here to 'retired'. Why bother if Wikia is going to &^%$# up their own site? --Deltaslug (talk) 00:59, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

I can't revoke the title myself, but I could pass it along to Mod Shauny who might be able to do it, although I remember that Jagex wouldn't want to do that. Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 08:43, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Wikia is clueless - Congrats, wikia. You continue to make the user experience even worse, but at least you are driving analytics up (which is all that matters, right??). The videos are awful and filled with misinformation. But more importantly, they're completely useless for readers. Readers don't need a video that gives them vague information about what map clues are, and that it can be "a great excuse to work co-op with other players". They are looking for a quick answer to the clue they're on -- having an auto-playing video that auto-follows as you scroll is NOT going to make them come back. I had a good laugh when they showed private server footage in the OSRS map clue video, though. Clueless. Mining cape (t) Rune14 (talk) Mining cape (t) 05:51, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

why are we still dealing with this crap - simply put, this wiki and its sister wiki (old school) should move to a different host, like gamepedia. I can not see any right reason to stay with a host that is pulling crap like this. --User:Heavyoak/Signature 08:09, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Let's change hosts (again mk IV) - It's truly admirable how profoundly horrible each of Wikia's new updates are. I don't think they've done any good at all since deleting Monaco, and that was years ago. I honestly don't know whom they think this is going to help, apart from themselves. And since that's glaringly obvious, it's quite plain that they only care about themselves. We should do everything we can to get rid of this crap. Put a huge notice on the main page on how to do it for readers, and ditto for removing ads, if those are still a problem (yay adblock). 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 08:24, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

OK, watched the video. What the actual flying duck? This is even worse than I thought. On a side note, why does the wiki look like this for me on Oasis (50% zoom)? 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 08:30, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Changing host - I'm relatively new to editing the wiki so I didn't get the whole 'changing host' thing before. But my god, I get it now. Those videos are so horrifically bad. Literally anyone with 5 minutes of gameplay under their belt would have done a better job. Which is fine, they can create all the bad videos they want. But refusing the input of us? That's just a no-go. They seriously refuse to delete this abomination that they spent a whole 2 minutes on creating. I'm not one to get mad easily, but man I'm mad. The level of incompetence and apathy goes through the roof. We should seriously consider changing host. (Which I know has been done before.)--Galian prist (talk) 08:41, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Comment - The featured video feature wastes every editor, reader and Wikia Inc.'s time. Easily outdated if some effort was put into them and the wholesale stealing of videos from Youtube is horrifying. I would have hoped that they would understand they cannot have their interns or whoever is involved to present these farces. The videos are intolerable and represent the content on this wiki in the worst possible way. Moving hosts will do nothing; just send the proper message to Wikia Inc. that this cannot continue. Ryan PM 09:04, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Wikia care more about monetization over reputability - may sound harsh but it's true. With the private server videos appearing (mainly on OSW) and I bet there's some dicing or gambling sites somewhere too, it's clear that Wikia do not really care about our inevitably tarnished reputation as the best RS resource. I remember earlier threads about forking to another host years back, I wouldn't be surprised if another popped up again.

Though it's not all that surprising, in a way. We are one of the most consistent and active Wikia wikis, however I do think it's out of order to carelessly embed these abomination videos about "Zamic wizard" and other repugnance. They should have thought it through rather than giving us no choice but to accept them and no deliberation on the matter. — KnazO 11:22, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Jagex... - ...have contacted Wikia and they said they are going to "address any inaccuracies". It's good that they're helping us out. The bad thing is though, we don't want these videos altogether. We've consistently voted as a community on multiple occasions against them (most recently Forum:Videos on specifics pages). I'm sure everyone would rather these be removed rather than made "more consistent". I feel like, at this point, maybe it would be an idea to contact Jagex and see if they would theoretically be willing to fork the site onto their domain - if people are going to start talking about changing hosts again (which I can see has already started). I don't like Wikia either, and I want to move, but because of things like search rankings (as addressed in the countless amounts of 'move hosts' threads), the only viable way I see of doing this is to move to RuneScape's official domain. https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 12:38, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Featured Videos - Hi Runescape community. I've read through your feedback both here and on the Reddit thread. We've taken the video down from the Coordinates page based on that feedbck (you may need to purge the page to confirm its removal) and I am in contact with a rep from Jagex. I've also sent your feedback about the content of the video to the video creator for revision. As you know Featured Video is a new feature for us and, in this case, we've hit some bumps in the road; we will continue to refine and improve our offerings. Jen Burton (help forum | blog)

I'd love for this to be a step in the right direction, but all of the videos you have implemented on this wiki so far (including the Money making guide one which you haven't removed) are inaccurate. As much as it is understandable that you represent a company and the company's interests, it is not within our interests - as a community, as editors, and as players - to use these videos on our wiki. They will quickly become outdated and we'll have the same problem where there will be heavy complaints about the content. In a game like this, where anything can change at any time (in comparison to say, Grand Theft Auto), these videos are not suitable for us at all. Please save the increasing amount of complaints and the inevitable misinformation in the future by not implementing these videos at all on the wiki https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 16:53, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
Hey Jayden (and the whole community), we have now removed all the videos posted both on Runescape and OSRS and are evaluating processes going forward. As mentioned below re my conversation with Jagex, we're looking at including one person from the community in the script review process. The reason for just one person is that in our previous attempts (not here) to involve the larger community in script creation we found that having too much input resulted in lower quality scripts so if we continue to create video for Runescape, we want to test to see how having a single point of contact will work. I'll work with the admins to identify who the best person to start with would be. We'll also be having internal discussions today and tomorrow regarding whether the nature of Runescape and its ever changing elements means it's not a good candidate for featured video at all. Please know that I want to work with the community on this issue and, if possible, come to an agreement that works for both FANDOM and the Runescape community here. Jen Burton (help forum | blog)

Well said, Jayden. I haven't been able to trust Wikia on anything lately, but this is a new level of low for them. You guys at Wikia are lucky Mol quit, because he'd probably go even more ballistic than when ads were slipped into infoboxes, and I daresay he'd be angry enough to want to switch over to another host... https://i.imgur.com/7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 16:59, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
Right there with you Jayden. I don't understand why "Fandom" would think it is a good idea to have someone who clearly has no idea what this game is about make video content on it. If Wikia wants video content, ASK THE PLAYERS WHO PLAY THE GAME. Not this stupid junk that clutters many user's pages and makes the staff look like fools. I actually threw up watching the video about ZAMIK WIZARDS - like no bull, I was so utterly disappointed in FANDOM POWERED BY WIKIA POWERED BY FANDOM POWERED BY THE CHEAT POWERED BY NAKED LAWN GNOMES that my stomach actually said "hey Stinko, remember that roast beef sandwich you had for lunch? This blows - Why? Just why? Could you have chosen a more incompetent person for these videos? Just stop trying to ruin the communities that have been built. Amascut symbol Amascut Ia Morte 17:09, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the person reading these scripts is a robot. https://i.imgur.com/7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 17:19, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Update from Jagex - Jagex has been in contact with Wikia/Fandom about these videos and to summarise:

  • Wikia/Fandom have taken down one video - the one that was on Treasure Trails/Guide/Coordinates - but it will probably come back in a revised form
  • Wikia/Fandom will only be willing work with one member of the community for creating/reviewing video scripts
  • According to the Sales Director at Wikia/Fandom, the videos are here to stay

Our move. I don't think this changes much in terms of why a lot of us are complaining, but I also don't think Wikia are going to change their stance about this at all from the sounds of things. https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 17:58, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
