Below is a list of inactive bots:

For the purpose of this thread I have defined inactive as no edits for the past 6 months.

My main concern with having inactive accounts flagged as bots is that recent changes has the option to hide bot edits, which is enabled by default. There are cases of accounts being hacked, and the likelihood of this occurring only increases the longer they are unused. How long would it be before one of us noticed a rogue bot?

Inactive sysop bots are even more of a concern. Hacked sysops has occurred before, and no doubt will again. Imagine if someone gained access to a sysop bot and made hundreds of deletes. Imagine if they added a malicious script to MediaWiki:Common.js. Imagine if they undid all the abusefilter actions (this is irreversible). How long would it be before we stopped them and undid the damage?

With this in mind, I have 2 options:

  1. Remove all both bot and sysop flags (where applicable) from inactive bots.
  2. Remove sysop flags from inactive bots.

The removal of these flags does not signify a loss of trust in the operator. They would be free to informally request the flag back should they find a need for their bot.

Support 1 - Yeah, there's a distinct possibility of any one of those accounts (plus my AWB which I never used) being hacked into. If one of their owners wants to start running the bot again, it's easy enough to restore the flag as well. User:Real Not Pure/Signature 09:01, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

For reasons beyond my comprehension, Real Not Bot is not listed on Special:ListUsers/bot. It has been added to the above list, thanks for bringing it up.

Gawd Cam, learn to alphabetise! User:Real Not Pure/Signature 10:07, June 7, 2013 (UTC)
I like how it alleges that ɘ last edited over a month ago. BTW, you need to set it to all users for contributions amount. Real Not Bot was the only bot you missed though. MolMan 13:43, June 7, 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't realise why I missed it until I noticed it only had 3 edits. It alleged AzBot last edited in March or something, so it's not entirely accurate.

Comment - You left our Ajrbot from the list. I've also included BrainBot as its latest edit is only 2 weeks after that of Michabotbot in addition to its owner being inactive. Suppa chuppa Talk 15:58, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

I was under the impression BrainBot was a Exchange page updater, for when TyBot and AzBot both fail. However, I had forgotten that AmauriceBot also fulfils that task and is far more active, so I don't have any problem with it being added to the list.

Support 1 - It's not like I'm ever going to use AWB again and RyanBot did more than enough edits that are now gone from all those imports and file name changes. Ryan PM 16:37, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

Question - How can I continue to secretly abuse the wiki with ajrbot if he is no longer a bot??? Ajraddatz (Talk) 19:50, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

I can give you my bot's password : "ILOVECHEESEANDCHEESEISGOOD" Just don't share it with anyone MolMan 19:53, June 7, 2013 (UTC)
ty. With that settled, some bureaucrat can removed the flag from Ajrbot whenever. Ajraddatz (Talk) 19:54, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - Now if 1 passes we can have a discussion about desysopping inactive sysops Wait doesn't QBot still update pages via Template:Hiscore autoupdate? http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 20:42, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

NO - THE BOTS MIGHT COME BACK ONE DAY AND THEY MIGHT BE USEFUL AGAIN, THERE'S NO REASON TO REMOVE THE RIGHTS THE COMMUNITY AGREED TO GIVE THEM 7 YEARS AGO@#$ User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 20:55, June 7, 2013 (UTC)

I am actually not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, blaze. Really. Allcaps is not enough to show that it's not serious? I REALLY HATE YOU NOW CUS EVERYONE WHO DENIES AWESOMENESS IS A NOOB >:O JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 21:00, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

By removing their rights, we would be be sending the message that we don't trust them anymore, which might hurt their little bot feelings :c --Shockstorm (talk) 06:22, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - Most of these bots are unused. And those bots with sysop never needed them. 222 talk 01:17, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - If they're inactive then we may as well remove their bot and sysop flags. Temujin 03:48, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - Given that bot edits do not normally appear in the recent changes, there is greater potential of their edits going unnoticed. Therefore, there is greater chance of abuse and it is prudent inactive bots have their flags removed. Smithing (talk | contribs) 05:06, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - per above and me being too lazy to come up with a reason --Shockstorm (talk) 06:22, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support 1 - Keel them with fire and then remove the bot flags from them if they remain. User:TyA/sig 13:16, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support banhamm0ring everyone - I think your suggestion of adding that script to Common.js is really good. We should do that. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 21:01, June 8, 2013 (UTC)

Support - Although my bot has mysteriously removed himself from the list. Maybe he was hacked. (Seriously though, I'm eventually going to use it again and it's just a hassle to ask for it back again.) I don't understand why PointyBot was not removed in the original trim-down a couple years ago. ʞooɔ 11:43, June 9, 2013 (UTC)

Vouching against my bots - Image optimisation bot and RSW image renamer have indeed been inactive, and could be unflagged as of this writing. Proofbot has been active with the clan EXP scraper and Visual Editor fail fixer tasks unattended. More generally, support per Saftzie:
