Welcome to InconsistencyScape, sponsored by Jagex, with your host Salix. It happens naturally, when a big group of people work on something, things, in this case wiki articles, tend to differ on small points, for instance the order in which infoboxes are added to the articles for equipable items. You'd say that using common sense would be the most logical way, but some consistency would be nice. This thread was started because I noticed Henneyj added infobox recipe above infobox bonuses on several teletab articles. So I notified them that infobox bonuses is usually always at the top, just below infobox item and the article intro. But they disagreed and said that for these articles it makes more sense (see there's common sense again :P) to have infobox bonuses below infobox recipe. And after looking at those pages again, I have to agree that does make sense to have infobox recipe at the top followed by infobox bonuses (with a section header) on articles for pocket slot items, since the only noteworthy in bonuses is that it says that it is a pocket slot item, while other equipable items have more useful information in infobox bonuses. So I would like to propose a default order for infoboxes on item pages, including the exception for pocket slot items as described above.

Default order:

  1. Header templates
  2. Template:Infobox Item
  3. Article introduction
  4. Template:Infobox Bonuses (without header, except when recipe is above it)
  5. Miscellaneous sections like history
  6. Template:Infobox recipe (put above bonuses if on pocket slot item)
  7. Template:Dropping monsters list
  8. Template:Store locations list
  9. Template:Disassembly (always at the end)
  10. Gallery
  11. Trivia
  12. References
  13. Navboxes
  14. Language links
  15. Categories

Above is just an example and does not include everything. Also, infobox item and the article introduction/contents are the only ones required, the rest is optional. Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 19:20, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

Sure - 1 questions though - where do references go (as in {{reflist}})? This may seem a bit nitpicky but this sort of thing can always be transposed onto other article types e.g. NPC articles Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 13:22, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

I knew I forgot something. I've added references. Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 15:27, August 15, 2017 (UTC)
What about the succession template? :P 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 19:12, August 15, 2017 (UTC)
You mean {{Succession}}? I believe this thread is specifically aimed towards item articles, but I'll answer your question as it is relevant towards JMod articles. Personally, I place it at the bottom of the page, before the trivia or references section (whichever one comes first). xHR7zpA.png6encXAo.png 19:17, August 15, 2017 (UTC)
Succession is less common, but it usually goes above trivia, doesn't it? :P Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 19:20, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

Comment - I agree with the premise of this thread, but I don't want to make things more complex than they are. A lot of this is common sense based on other item articles, and could be made into a style guide if necessary. My only concern about it is that according to the survey we're currently running, as I'll be posting about in a future thread, people think that our policies and the way we do things are too confusing/complex. I think we need to make it as easy as possible for new editors to make an item page, perhaps by making it a preload? xHR7zpA.png6encXAo.png 13:26, August 15, 2017 (UTC)

This is meant as a style guide, but I'm not completely sure if this can be made into a preload, since not everything I mentioned above is required for each item, only item infobox is required, the rest depends on what kind of item it is. Perhaps there could be preloads for different kinds of items? I've never done something with preloads yet. Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 19:36, August 20, 2017 (UTC)

Support - I like the idea in general, however Jayden makes a critical point that I feel would need be part of this if it were to be implemented. We don't want individuals new to the wiki to be confused or feel like their edits are constantly being reverted or changed because they didn't follow a specific format. Some type of preload would be ideal. Pernix cowl detail MAGE-KIL-R Zaros symbol 18:55, August 19, 2017 (UTC)

See above for my reply to Jayden, additionally, I'm assuming new editors would use other pages as an example, so if those pages are correctly formatted, then there would be no need to revert their edits, and instead of constantly reverting we should let them know why we reverted it the first time. I'm personally trying to do this more. And preloads would indeed be nice. :) Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 19:36, August 20, 2017 (UTC)

Support - I really need this in my life. Zahti (talk) 01:57, August 23, 2017 (UTC)

Closed - The proposed order will be adopted. Salix has kindly volunteered to find some policy/guide to park the list in. --LiquidTalk 20:09, August 23, 2017 (UTC)

P.S. Comment - I've created a new style guide to park this in, RuneScape:Style guide/Item. Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) 21:28, August 23, 2017 (UTC)
