This is a problem that has irked me for a while, and I would like to address this issue and get consensus about it before I make any rash decisions.

I want to move a few high-use templates, optionally changing all occurrences with my lovely AWB. These are:

Right now, the names are (in my opinion) hard to remember and don't reflect what they actually show. Whenever I need one of these, I spend five minutes trying to find other articles that use the same template just to see how to call them. That should not be acceptable.

Please leave your opinions below. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 16:16, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

Edit: Feel free to leave other high-use templates that should be renamed. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 20:51, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

Edit 2: The thread will now be about the following templates:

Strong Support - I was thinking this myself, but never got around to doing anything about it. Can we also merge {{Cleanup}} and {{t|Cleanup image}}? Oh well. --latest?cb=20170911143617Scuzzy Betalatest?cb=20170911144529 22:08, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

While the two templates do have the same general meaning, I do think they should be kept apart since the explanation on both templates is different. However I can see why a merge would be wanted; to be honest, I've never seen {{t|Cleanup image}} used. Rather, {{Retake image}} is used pretty much everywhere. Maybe an idea to redirect the former to the latter? Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 22:28, December 17, 2014 (UTC)
I recently went through and modified a number of image maintenance templates, and was planning to clarify this soon on the forgotten RS:IM. We have a large number of templates that effectively mean the same thing, but all add unique categories - for example, jpg and gif both just mean we need a new image. These have been categorized into two supercategories: [[:Category:Images in need of cleanup]] and Category:Images needing to be retaken, and all image maintenance templates automatically categorize the image into a subcategory of one of these. The intended usage of [[:Template:Cleanup image]] is for any general image maintenance, and categorizes the image generically into the image cleanup supercategory. The template Template:Cleanup is meant to be used on and within articles, and puts the article into a separate category that has nothing to do with image maintenance. Riblet15 10:16, December 18, 2014 (UTC)
Still, what's the exact difference between {{Retake image}} and {{t|Cleanup image}} in terms of functionality? They both mean roughly the same thing. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 10:19, December 18, 2014 (UTC)
{{Retake image}} means someone has to go in game and get us a new image. {{t|Cleanup image}} means someone can use the image we have and do stuff in photoshop to improve it (eg add transparency, etc). Riblet15 10:45, December 18, 2014 (UTC)
Fair enough. Merging of those templates will not be needed in that case, as the two have different purposes. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 10:47, December 18, 2014 (UTC)

No. Stahp farming edits on yo bot.Jk, it's a good idea, cuz the current names don't make as much sense compared to the proposed ones. :P User:ChaoticShadow/SigReal

Support - sounds good and yeah per Chaotic Star Talk ayy lmao ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 22:19, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - some discontinued items are not holiday items so changing it to holiday items would be problematic. Sly Fawkes (talk) 22:20, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

The navbox title from {{Discontinued}} is "Holiday rewards" and would thus be moved to {{Holiday rewards}}. {{Rare items}} would become the new {{Discontinued}}. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 22:24, December 17, 2014 (UTC)
I think Sly's point is that the navbox is poorly labelled, since not all the items are holiday-related. Would a better solution be to relabel the nav box "Discontinued items"? Then it doesn't have to be moved. --User:Saftzie/Signature 01:16, December 18, 2014 (UTC)
In that case the navbox should be properly labelled. I would in that case move it to {{Discontinued items}} still, since {{Discontinued}} should be the proper name for the template that is now {{Rare item}}. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 15:03, December 18, 2014 (UTC)

Support the first two and Neutral the last. Ozank Cx 22:41, December 17, 2014 (UTC)

Support to all 3 - Each of the suggested names seems sensible given the current content of the mentioned templates. However, whoever does the move should leave a note on the doc page of discontinued to avoid any confusion caused by said move. User:Cqm/Signature

That would be the easiest part of the move. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 09:31, December 18, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose Support 1 & 3, Neutral on 2 for Edit 2 proposal

  • {{Discontinued}} includes not only holiday items. About 1/3 of it is non-holiday items. Renaming a nav of non-holiday items to "Holiday rewards" is worse than calling them "Discontinued." It's stated above that the nav box is labelled "Holiday rewards." In that case, it's the nav box title that is wrong, not the template name. Just retitle the nav box to "Discontinued items." The confusion in the scope of the nav is somewhat apparent in the items it includes. If it's supposed to be a nav of discontinued items, rename the template "Nav discontinued." The convention for infoboxes is to call them "Infobox <whatever>."
  • "Rare items" are things like partyhats. The de facto term for them is "rare." Jagex even calls them "rares." In addition, changing the template name to "Discontinued" would be more of a source of confusion, since the existing Discontinued template should get retitled "Discontinued items" or "Nav discontinued" or something similar. There'd be two things called "Discontinued."
  • How exactly is "Removed" better than "Gone?" A more descriptive and unambiguous name would be "Deleted content," because that's what Jagex did. If you had them in your bank, inventory, or worn items, Jagex deleted them straight out of the game. * poof *

Here's my proposal per your points brought up:
Agree? I'll change it in the OP if you do. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 09:48, December 23, 2014 (UTC)
The first and last seem okay. I still think there's not much way to get around the fact that people call rare items "rares" quite commonly. It seems simpler to me to call the template that, as well, (i.e., no change) and avoid confusion with the first template. --User:Saftzie/Signature 16:40, December 23, 2014 (UTC)
I would entirely agree with you that "rares" are an often-used term. However I do feel that the template should be renamed, seeing that the category it adds is, in fact, Category:Discontinued content. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 16:45, December 23, 2014 (UTC)
It's not worth too much angst. I'd support 1 and 3 and go neutral on 2. I think there's a decent argument either way, so I'll choose not to choose. --User:Saftzie/Signature 17:01, December 23, 2014 (UTC)
Updated. --User:Saftzie/Signature 14:49, December 24, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - I created a redirect Template:Removed -> Template:Gone, so that both can be used now. If the move will still take place, the page can just be moved over this redirect. For now though, both names will work. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:58, December 24, 2014 (UTC)

Template:Removed and Template:Gone will both redirect to {{Deleted content}} when the move occurs. Fallen leaves.png ThePsionic Eek.png 14:03, December 24, 2014 (UTC)
