I, Iiii_I_I_I, am proposing:

  • a new theme for Oasis;
  • a slightly new main page;
  • a new logo.

All of these changes are on my test wiki here.

The new theme entails:

  • a new background, stolen from the wallpapers section of runescape.com
  • a new color scheme:
    • blue, because I like blue
    • white, because
      • literally every other color matches white
      • our current brown only goes with other browns; it also reminds me of poop
      • it's a contrast to the dark RuneScape website
      • it differentiates us from other RuneScape fansites, most of which are also dark; Tip.it, rsbandb, RuneZone, etc.

The new main page entails:

  • a "slider" of six images near the top of the page, which
    • link to six major content articles
    • is easier to comprehend, I think, than three columns of text
    • makes up for the lack of images in the left column of the main page after the removal of FA
  • the merging of "Events" and "Wiki News" into a "Community" section
  • the merging of "Updates", "Patch notes", and "On this day..." into a "RuneScape News" section
    • I would also like to cut the descriptive sentences after each update. It's already making our current Updates section huge, and is not what most users come to the RuneScape Wiki for.

The new logo entails:

  • a change from our current logo, which
    • uses the font from another game, Neverwinter Nights
    • is ugly
  • a switch to a more professional-looking font (Brandon Grotesque)
  • two possibilities; one as the logo in the top left, and one in the center of the page

Sincerely,

Iiii I I I 01:40, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Edit: works on tablets too, although we can't design for Retina displays

Iiii_I_I_I Support - looks nice Elune (talk) fetus is a good boy 01:59, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Strong support - The brown theme we have now is very ugly. The new one looks nice. It's pretty close to the default Oasis theme. --LiquidTalk 02:03, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose color scheme - The blue looks like default Wikia monaco. Also that background is entirely overused by RuneScape. It was even our Twitter background for a long time because I got it from Jagex's Twitter background. Also why are templates brown? Doesn't match with anything. I do like the homepage look, however. It's very neat and new-looking. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 02:41, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

The blue is more or less like default oasis too. I don't see why it's a bad thing. User:Cqm/Signature
Am I the only one who really likes monaco? :( Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 08:43, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
The templates are not part of the proposal; only the three things I listed above are. Existing templates/diffs will just be recolored. --Iiii I I I 11:45, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
I think it's a bad thing precisely because it looks default, Cam. Regarding the templates: mkay good, then the only thing I have a problem with is the color scheme (or lackthereof). I like the logo because of how updated and clean it looks, but it might not fit with the spirit of the game. I wouldn't oppose it though, just the default blue and overused background image. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 18:41, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Strong Support - It looks fantastic. I've been wanting a new theme for ages but I lack the creativity needed to make one myself. My only issue is with the wiki logo being centered on the page; this looks weird when the icons below it are centered on their column. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 08:40, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

How about now? --Iiii I I I 11:45, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Perfect. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 13:10, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - I agree that we need a new theme, but I'm not too fond of the logo or colour scheme of this one. Wahisietel rejuvenated chathead Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon 13:35, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Can't do too much about the color scheme, but I've RuneScape'd the logo slightly. --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - It all looks very clean and chic, and it's good to move on from brown plus brown mixed with brown. One critique I'd like to offer, and that's on the logo. It's v plain and doesn't really speak "RuneScape". Now maybe that's because I'm not a professional and some chap with a beret and moustache should be telling me that it's minimalistic not plain, but my first impression is that it's just normal text, not anything recognisable that people will remember. That is my only little gripe. Ronan Talk 14:07, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

I thought it was trajan pro originally which was used on the rs site and logo iirc, not sure if it still is. User:Cqm/Signature

Oppose - Many users (such as I) are used to the current theme with this nice brown tint. The blue one looks... OK. However, I'm not sure where Wikia's functionality ends, so is it possible for the user to choose the theme he views the wiki in? If so, support. β (t&c)Oil4 I made this 14:18, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Actually, would it be possible for the old theme to be recreated in one .css file? That would still keep it as an option, and would definitely gain my support. β (t&c)Oil4 I made this 14:19, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
There's a considerable difficulty in maintaining css for a different theme due to the amount of css wikia regularly changes. The only viable method is to create a duplicate wiki with the old theme and import it from there.
I'm not sure how viable that is though because of how wikia caches it's css - $wgStylePath (which I think is the one that contains the most recent build number) isn't available in css, just js and php. You'd have to import it through js, giving you a flash of blue before getting brown again. User:Cqm/Signature
How does Wikipedia let users change their skin? Could we do something like that? --Iiii I I I 20:09, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Skin or theme? Skin is just a setting in Special:Preferences, I don't know enough about wikipedia to know if they have separate themes you can alter through preferences. Maybe a gadget, but even that takes maintaining. User:Cqm/Signature
Cam, I'd be fine with the flash of blue. Having said that, I'll look into making some form of plugin that prevents the blue from downloading in the first place. A chrome extension should do the trick. β (t&c)Oil4 I made this 20:48, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
If you can do it with GreaseMonkey or TamperMonkey it might avoid the flash and I think it's ok to insert a style tag before the DOM is ready. You just need to make sure it's inserted after the standard oasis scss file. User:Cqm/Signature
Ok, that sounds good. The only problem is that I suck at css :/ β (t&c)Oil4 I made this 09:42, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - The logo doesn't speak for itself imo. It's too plain. Also, the colors on the homepage looks empty lol. It's too bright. User:Jr Mime/Signature 14:24, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

>colors look empty

Anyway, I've darkened the gradient for each section, if that's what you meant, and changed the logo slightly --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - I'm glad everyone agrees we need to get rid of our current poop theme, and the organisation of this new one is very good, though I have some remarks when it comes to the design.

First of all, as others have said, the logo is too plain. I'd give it a fancier font (the pre-Mobilising Armies RS font if that's possible) and, I dunno, a rune instead of the dots on the i to make it more RuneScape'y.

The colours are okay, but I'd make the blue a bit darker. The links are pretty bad if you ask me.

The main page now has six content "tiles". I'd reckon another two could be added, really. Maybe Characters, Music, Graphical updates, Minigames or Future updates or something. Appealing stuff that people like, basically.

As for the wallpaper, I'm personally not a fan of it. Too commonly used and, well, meaningless, so to speak. I don't mind, really, so long as it's not this or any of the RS3 and citadel stuff... I'd be in favour of using in-game images, or a collage of them, fading into one another. Probably bright locations like, uh, the desert or Kandarin/Misthalin/Asgarnia. Just my two cents. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 16:12, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

I've changed the logo slightly and darkened the links. --Iiii I I I 20:06, July 21, 2014 (UTC)
Links are good, still not a fan of the font. Everything's just so...generic. :/ 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 08:43, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Support new theme - I support the need for a new theme, this current one we have at the moment is starting to look a little dull, however I will say that a much better colour scheme and logo is needed than the one shown in your example. Abyssal vine whip TonyBest100 Bandos chestplate 19:38, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Strong support - The new theme is a lot easier on the eyes. I like the simplicity of the logo, though it does take away from the 'medieval fantasy' feeling. BGUyLfN.png CJaW7Er.png 20:17, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

I don't agree that bright blue is easier on the eyes than gentle brown, but this is all subjective anyway. I really don't see how this thread is going to get anywhere. β (t&c)Oil4 I made this 20:48, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - It looks really nice. Broav pet Rhys Talk Completionist cape 20:29, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - Why are the modules in the 'sidebar' without a gradient background on the mainpage? Also, could we get a fixed background image rather than one that moves with the page - it looks better imo. I also converted the mainpage to use divs rather than tables a while back in an effort to try and improve SEO, would it be possible to have divs for this too? User:Cqm/Signature

The solid-colored right column was supposed to differentiate it slightly from the left column, but I guess it looks kinda weird. I'll make some changes tomorrow when I'm on my computer. The tables are just a placeholder thing so I can get the look right first, it's definitely not going to be the final product. --Iiii I I I 05:47, July 22, 2014 (UTC)
Also, the current favicon uses neverwinter. Do you have any plans to use the new font in the favicon, or use a different image all together? User:Cqm/Signature
I haven't really thought about the favicon. I like the sword favicon on my test wiki, but I have no idea where it came from. I'd be open to anything. --Iiii I I I 17:05, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose - Very bland/boring. Not a fan of the background or color scheme. Suppa chuppa Talk 23:43, July 21, 2014 (UTC)

Support - I think it looks pretty nice. Can we see what it would look like on an article page? User:TyA/sig 04:46, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

The colors of the infobox and the stub template at the bottom of Nex are about what it'd be like. Ignore the different look of the infobox; that was one of my proposals (stolen from Wookieepedia) that actually passed but was never implemented because I was too lazy/too inexperienced with coding to actually transfer it over. --Iiii I I I 05:28, July 22, 2014 (UTC)
Looks pretty nice on the article too. User:TyA/sig 03:47, July 26, 2014 (UTC)

Support - Looks good to me. -- Megadog14Talk 20:58, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Comment - Monobook at the Eye Wiki seems not so great and much more like the RS Wiki current Oasis theme than even the proposed Oasis theme. I suspect the Eye Monobook theme is not intended for RS Monobook. Can you confirm? --User:Saftzie/Signature 21:41, July 22, 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, my theme is only for Oasis. Monobook will stay unchanged. --Iiii I I I 01:59, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Support - The change would be a welcome cry from what we have utilized for so these past couple (or more) years. Simpler font and no more bland brown to muck around with. If there was anything I'd want to have different, it would be in relation to the background image. Although I am not sure what would be good to replace it with. Ryan PM 03:52, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the background, but if anything it's something to improve on at a later point. It works with the theme for the time being so I think it's an acceptable trade-off. User:Cqm/Signature
Oppose - At least in it's current form. I like the images, but do they not push pertinent info down the page? Also, as others have said, the blue/white colour scheme is too generic and too bright for my tastes. 10:57, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose - Images are nice, but the colours are kinda boring, and I have no problem whatsoever with the current theme. -- Cycloneblaze (user - talk - contribs) 12:25, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose - I think it's very plain-looking, and it lacks some of the charm of the current theme.Enigma 14:03, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Neutral - You know, in comparison, our current front page is kind of ugly. I'd personally ditch the shadow on the swords in the logo, though. — Enigma 00:09, July 26, 2014 (UTC)
I agree, but unfortunately I couldn't find the original source without the shadow and had to copy the swords from our current logo. --Iiii I I I 14:10, July 27, 2014 (UTC)

Partial support - Yes to color changes and most of the listed improvements. No to the merging of "Updates", "Patch notes", and "On this day..." into a "RuneScape News" section, oh and keep the current logo (could be revised a bit) for continuity. This reminds me... did you know the current background has a typo in the word "Taverley"? 5-x Talk 17:35, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Also, "Locations" looks better than "Places". 5-x Talk 17:38, July 23, 2014 (UTC)
I had originally labelled it "Locations", but it was too cramped inside the 170px tile, so I switched to a shorter word. --Iiii I I I 17:05, July 24, 2014 (UTC)
I have a feeling the current background image is a relic from the god letters or an early postbag. I wouldn't be surprised if there was much, much more wrong with it than one misspelling. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - Perhaps if a new theme is in order, (it has been, what, over three years now?) we could do what we've done before and have a theme competition! That would be quite exciting. I've been quite an inactive admin for a long time now. The renaissance days of over a dozen active threads in the YG seem to be over, and it looks like a lot of anti-vandalism is done by bots now. I think a theme competition would be a great thing to give everybody something to do to be active in the community! — Enigma 18:18, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Super duper Strong Support- Editing this wikia sometimes makes my eyes bleed of the bland colour. This one looks sooooo amazing~ --Sucy_orb_2.pngScuzzy BetaLuna_Nova_sigil.png 18:55, July 23, 2014 (UTC)

Partial support/Neutral - I've got no objections to a change. Current color scheme is fine to me. The proposed one is ok as well. How much of a chore would it be to implement? --Deltaslug (talk) 04:17, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

Not much of a chore, thanks to theme designer. --Iiii I I I 17:05, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

Support - I think it looks very chic.  Good job!  One thing I think still needs significant modification, though, is the logo; it just doesn't appear 'balanced' enough, per se, to me.  Maiyli78 (talk) 09:29, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

Support - Don't forget to (provide an) update (for) our Facebook and Twitter. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 14:00, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

My theme idea - For whatever reason we seem to like blanket backgrounds that cover the whole page with scenery. So I tried something different :3= Magikal Goothix treez. The background is fixed so they will always be there, and they're pretty big. And magical. Background here; wordmark here. The theme is gray and green and I made the window-dealy semi-transparent. The text is a little light but that's for you css folk to mess with. I can change anything if necessary. Not sure if people will like it not, so if it sucks, at least I had fun making it. :3= User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 19:28, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

Perhaps we should open submissions for themes as Enigma suggested above if people are interested in coming up with their own proposals? It would be a shame if themes put forward here get covered over with other comments from users. Ronan Talk 19:58, July 24, 2014 (UTC)
I'd be open to that. There seems to be rough consensus for the mainpage alterations or very little objection to it at the very least so we could hopefully narrow it down to logo, theme and favicon updates - favicon because it used the font of the existing logo - or even split those three into separate threads again. Until the end of August seems like a reasonable timeline for everyone to try out making a theme if they want to and we can follow the guidelines set out in Forum:Propose a new theme which seems to be the last time a permanent site-wide theme was approved. User:Cqm/Signature
I'd rather just have people with experience in web/graphical design do this instead of making it open submission. I don't feel like voting on a bunch of slapped together shit. This will turn theme change into a huge mess. I'd rather just have 5 or so professionally designed themes made and then us be forced to pick one as is. With being open to this much input and change, we're not going to get anywhere, and the wiki will forever look like literal feces. MolMan 00:39, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
I'm not exactly feeling much of a community vibe from that comment. This is how our system has worked in the past -- users who are interested in submitting their theme should be allowed to do so. Choosing who is and isn't allowed to submit an idea isn't really what we're about. We vote on the theme we prefer. The likelihood is we won't choose one that looks like literal feces. Ronan Talk 01:28, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
Given how this is a thing that goings to affect literally all of the wiki, I'd rather it be dealt with in a professional manner. We don't need horrible themes distracting from good themes just because someone likes a niche that gets filled by the bad themes. MolMan 01:36, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
I personally think that the quicker we get rid of this poop theme the better. If we can muster consensus for this one I don't see the point in opening submissions if it just ultimately slows down the process. I also agree that professionalism is a key factor here and a few haphazardly thrown together themes will detract from the overall idea. However, if others want to present professional themes, I have no objection. --LiquidTalk 02:03, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
"I'm not exactly feeling much of a community vibe from that comment." - Ronan, we vote on themes, which isn't very community-like imo. Random people come in and suggest themes, random people vote on them. Consensus doesn't get us anywhere either though. I don't think the themes should be such a big deal. For holidays we just change the them to whoever comes up with theirs first. For something visual, everyone is going to have a different opinion and it's not very feasible to vote on it or get community consensus on it. It might be better to just make a theme whenever you feel like it and see how people in chat/irc/the vicinity like it, within reason. "Hurr 'within reason' is subjective!" - Admins are the ones who have to change the theme so hopefully they will have done their homework before putting their name into the image history. I don't really know where I'm going with this anymore. But I hate the blue. :3= User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 02:29, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
I think the main problem with a 'professional' theme is that we have a distinct lack of professional web designers lying around. Even if we did, ThemeDesigner is has like 6 things to input to make the theme all you really need is an eye for matching colours. User:Cqm/Signature 15:51, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
Fetus is literally all i's. Thus he should design the theme. MolMan 15:54, July 25, 2014 (UTC)
Whichever theme we choose, I think the stuff where we put our text (so the grey parts in Fergie's design) should be white for visibility's sake. Or something similar to white anyway (IMO Ferg's grey is a tad too dark, but a lighter shade would be fine). 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 12:31, July 27, 2014 (UTC)

No Support - Personally I think a small refresh would be better than a redesign. The current colour scheme is quite nice and fits well with RuneScape. I really like adding the quest number to the title, the typography change is something I don't think we've ever considered site-wide and the infobox is clean and fresh although the borders could potentially use a slightly darker shade. Good ideas :) User:Cqm/Signature
Has some good elements to it, aye. I wouldn't have the links underlined though. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 11:25, July 28, 2014 (UTC)
I posted the image, thought I should probably create an account if I'm going to contribute... The fonts are Arial and Times New Roman, so they wouldn't have to be embedded or anything, and I think blue would work nicely for the links because it'd make them stand out more than they currently do. (BTW How do you comment on these discussions, I'm just editing the page lol) Sen Ogino (talk) 16:27, July 28, 2014 (UTC)
It's a good point about the links; brown does sort of blend into brown especially with the lack of underlining unless you happen to hover over them. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - I'm just a humble foreign admin of the Spanish RuneScape Wiki, and as such my opinion might not weight the same as others; anyways, I'm interested in this topic and I'll share a simple opinion.

Due to my lack of skills in web design, and our limited quantity of collaborators, we tecnically "copy" all of your CSS, JS and theme designs; thus, to follow our non-written policy, this change will affect our wiki too (this is mayor reason why I'm interested in this discussion). However, some thing in our theme are original; these were created by my own, and I'm proud enought of them to suggest them in your future theme. Example:

  • The wiki logo (this one), based on the new RS3 logo and font, and the Sword of Edicts to keep the 'sword' tradition.
  • The Wiki News design, that uses the collapsible function to show/hide details of the news; and also includes date and forum thread info about the news.
  • The poll archives, to save space in the main page and keep the history of results from the wiki polls.

I loved the Iiii_I_I_I's design, with the exception of the colours - I'll always support the brown theme. Some people say poop; I say rustic, classic and 'Scaper.

tl;dr: Liked fetus' idea, except for the colours. Check the Spanish RuneScape WIki for some cool ideas of my own. --See ya':

I really like that logo; if we could make something like that I'd like it much better than Iiii's logo. -- Cycloneblaze (user - talk - contribs) 15:59, July 28, 2014 (UTC)
I like the logo as well but I'm worried about directly copying the current RuneScape logo. Jagex might overlook its use on es, but we're one of the most visited RuneScape fansites and I'd rather not deal with the hassle of copyright conflict. --Iiii I I I 19:33, July 28, 2014 (UTC)
Don't worry; as long as you give the appropiate copyright disclaimers, there's no problem. Also, a LOT of RS fansites uses their official logo; and with the customizations, it'll look great. --See ya':
Ajente02_Firma.JPG 02:26, July 29, 2014 (UTC)
Copyright disclaimers are possibly not enough, I'm not familiar with how american copyright law works with respect to trademarks. Either way, I don't think there's anything wrong with something a bit more original and unique. I know we're a fansite at the end of the day, but I think a well-designed logo that isn't just a re-hash of an old RS logo would stand us in good stead for the future. User:Cqm/Signature

Support I do like the theme in general, and I especially like the 6 front page tiles. I do also like the way the logo looks. but the parts I don't like are the weirdly left-aligned the at the top of the front page looks weird. Also, the gradients on the main page boxes are really hard to see. Perhaps they could be made a bit more visible (bigger contrast etc). Finally, I don't really like the specific hue of blue used in the buttons. It looks a bit too metallic imo. But I guess everybody will want a slightly different colour anyway. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 16:36, July 28, 2014 (UTC)

The left-aligned "The" was just an alternate option. I've replaced it with the centered logo (without the swords, though, because they'll be blurry when they're scaled up). --Iiii I I I 19:07, July 30, 2014 (UTC)

Suggesthun - We've been using the default wiki font ever since this wiki started. How about we switch to a nicer font? We can just use Special:Upload and MediaWiki:Common.css/Webfonts.css to install the fonts. It'd be nice if we keep it fairly general yet unique, and use a font that reads quite easily (so nothing too flamboyant, cursive, swirly, or any of that). We could just use a standard websafe font, or anything that isn't Arial. I think that's what most people see in lieu of Helvetica not being supported by default for most readers anyway. User:Cqm/Signature
Did you buy Brandon Grotesque? It doesn't allow free licensing... User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 07:15, July 30, 2014 (UTC)
I was actually thinking of a serif font - possibly something from here, since they're all free and open source webfonts. --Iiii I I I 17:18, July 30, 2014 (UTC)

Question - So I have another theme idea in the works. I think we should discuss how we should go about selecting which theme to display. Not sure if I should make a new thread for the discussion... But as it is, consensus is going to be hard to reach if our arguments are "it looks nice" and "it doesn't look nice". ._. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 17:40, July 30, 2014 (UTC)

I think this is rapidly getting out of hand and is going to be a mess to close if we ever get consensus for anything. I'd like to summarise this, close it and split it into threads for a new mainpage design, a new logo and a new theme. It should make life a little easier although there's problems with matching themes to logos and re-doing the mainpage css when the theme changes. User:Cqm/Signature
This. Do this. --Farming-icon Ms ZuZu Talk Quest icon fixed 02:26, July 31, 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like that would be clearer yeah, but I do think we need to be able to match the different parts. If we choose a logo for one theme, and the theme is chosen to be something else, it won't fit well. Anyway, if we're going to have this split up, there should also be a place to discuss the font. Not necessarily a seperate thread, but a part of one would be good. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 21:30, July 31, 2014 (UTC)
How about one for theme/logo/graphical changes submissions; one for mainpage design; one for font. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 22:20, July 31, 2014 (UTC)
Sounds good to me :) I'll try and close this later today unless someone objects/has a better idea and then open up the 3 proposed threads. User:Cqm/Signature

Oppose - Not crazy about the colour scheme, logo or background. It just doesn't look Runescape-y enough. --Farming-icon Ms ZuZu Talk Quest icon fixed 02:26, July 31, 2014 (UTC)

Oppose - I don't like the idea trying to get it close to the default Oasis theme. We're a well established wiki, not a small new one. I think having default-esque design is just misleading. Ozank Cx 08:59, August 2, 2014 (UTC)

Closed - Due to the this forum getting out of hand, it has been split into three, unimaginatively named, new forums which can handle a more specific proposal and hopefully get some of the good ideas above implemented: Forum:New Theme, Forum:New Mainpage and Forum:New Font. I'd like to find a place to host the smaller changes that have been proposed too, but they don't seem suited to a full forum thread, so I'll tackle those at a later date in a different way.

The changes proposed so far:
