Forums: Yew Grove > RSChatBot Functions

Ahoy :) As brought up by Cook Me Plox regarding the RSChatBot, he suggested debating whether these functions that it provides should be enabled or not:

  1. !tell command (Is used to send tells to people while offline/online to save the use of talk pages)
  2. !remind command (A simple reminder)

Debate continue. Custodian crownCblair91User crown (9 more options)  Choose OptionUser Cblair91Talk to Cblair91Contributions Cblair91Achievements Cblair91Sandbox Cblair91Slayer LogSqueel of Fortune LogDaily Challenge LogMy Pages 03:51, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Discussion

Comment - I think Tell should be enabled, since sometimes, people (including me) just want to tell another user a simple message (like a link to a photo or a notice/reminder) that doesn't really warrent creating an entire new section for the talk page. Infact, I think this can (potentially) reduce talk pages getting filled up quickly for some users. Not sure what the reminder is nor how is it different than "tell" to comment about that though...

Comment - I wonder how it is that Evilbot has these functions in IRC and everyone likes them, uses them and misses them when Evilbot's down, yet there are apparently those that find them disruptive when in S:C. It's baffling. User:Cqm/Signature

I don't think that's a fair comparison. A lot of people who go in IRC never/rarely go in Chat, and a lot of people who go in Chat never/rarely go in IRC. Generally speaking, the culture of IRC is much further removed from the day-to-day operation of the wiki than Chat is.

Being removed from the 'day-to-day operation of the wiki' means that IRCers are capable of not abusing a chat bot? Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 10:29, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
I wasn't suggesting that at all. I meant that because the culture is more removed from the day-to-day operation of the wiki, things that are less relevant to it are generally seen as more acceptable then they would be in Chat.

What does this have to do with anything Haidro (talk) 11:37, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
Just do it? What ridiculous bureaucracy is S:C running that you need permissions for those basic commands Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 12:09, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
There's obviously a varied response in regards to these commands, so we can't simply add them without giving other people a say in it. Haidro (talk) 13:19, November 30, 2013 (UTC)
I thought they were already enabled... User:Cqm/Signature
Because this thread now exists, we should probably remove them until consensus is reached. Haidro (talk) 11:13, December 1, 2013 (UTC)
I see no harm in them existing for the duration of this thread unless someone has proof they cause disruption that isn't caused by a user abusing them. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - I was the one who told Sactage to go ahead and enable them. I think that they're nice commands to have, and if someone doesn't want to use them, they don't need to. I fail to see how someone using the commands properly would cause any issue whatsoever, besides the whole "People are going to abuse and spam this. It might not have happened yet, but it's gonna." However, if someone is making the bot spam, they should be the ones responsible for the spam, and not the bot. User:TyA/sig 14:20, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Whatever - I personally dislike people using !tell to give me a message, but that's just me. I haven't seen anyone being stupid with it yet except for me a couple of times. As for !remind, TIL that exists. MolMan 14:29, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

*Huggles Evilbot* - `tell is awesome, shame you chat folks haven't found that out yet. --LiquidTalk 15:32, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Go ahead - I warn you one of these days RSChatBot will become self aware and kill us all. -- Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 16:50, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

!tell RSChatBot Update for you! - User:Jr Mime/Signature 16:53, November 30, 2013 (UTC)

Supprot - yup, can't see anything wrong with this. Abusers will get the blame, not the bot. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 17:26, December 1, 2013 (UTC)

comment: There is an !ignore function that mods can use if people abuse these features. If people abuse them, they can get restricted. The !tell and !remind cause no harm in that chat otherwise. Also the original intention of them was for it to be sent in PM and not global chat. This is STILL being worked on.
