:Even more strange: If you look up the trends for simply "Runescape", the largest searches are being done in Finnish, Lithuanian, and Dutch, with English coming in at #4. And the USA is listed as country #9, with the Netherland and Canada ranking well above the USA for searches. That really seems a bit odd to me. --[[User:Robert Horning|Robert Horning]] 19:59, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

I say all that mess with titles and keywords and links was worth it. Let's look at how we are now:

Search "Runescape"

Google - 4th result
Bing - 17th result (World map)
Yahoo - 7th result
Ask - 12th result (not counting paid advertisements)
Dogpile - 9th result

Search "Runescape guide"

Google - 14th result
Bing - 30th result (Hunter)
Yahoo - 8th result (not counting the result with the "Dangerous downloads" warning, which I doubt anyone would click on)
Ask - Not found.
Dogpile - 21st result

Search "Runescape wiki"

Google - 1st result
Bing - 1st result
Yahoo - 1st result
Ask - 1st result
Dogpile - 2nd result

Along the way, I spotted this FAIL of an ad:

Comment - Lol @ the add. And i did notice that every Runescape item or monster i googled took me to the Wiki.Dragon platebody.pngCeno FlameTalk Contribs # SignDragon chainbody.png 22:29, November 17, 2009 (UTC)

@ the ad: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Also, the first one seems good, but we need to do something about "Runescape guide" to get us higher up. http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3921/thehimmemote.pngGone. 01:59, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

I agree, though it's a really good improvement to last time. That's a big one people would search for if they're just looking for a guide to RuneScape in general. We need to go deeper... The big question: How do those search engines determine what comes first? We need to find that out and game the system. How did we get the 4th result "runescape"? Because "RuneScape" is our main keyword? Well, the RSW is pretty much nothing but a scource of information; a guide. See where I'm going? — Enigma 05:21, November 18, 2009 (UTC)
Comment - think those results are good, but obviously "guide" would be better higher up. We get high with RuneScape because it is listed on a lot (maybe the majority) of our articles, in the text. But on an item article, we're not going to say "Abyssal Whip" guide, etc. It isn't really something we can do. By the way, I was surprised we got number 1 for "runescape wiki". I was sure Wikipedia would win that battle. And LOL at that ad Lol Cheers, Chicken7 >talk 06:05, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - For some reason, the Google results for "RuneScape" are different for me. There are like three RWT sites before us... -.- ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  08:13, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Gota love that ad Twig Talk https://i.imgur.com/772kZGs.png 08:16, November 18, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Google's ranking for "RuneScape Fansite" list us as 34th. We should throw out the word "Fansite" a bit more ;)

Comment - Google was how I found the RuneScape wiki (And was accidental), also, there are google searches for editors as well. Ruud (talk)(Suggest me naems) 06:40, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Comment I like to use the word "help" in my searches. That places us fifth, but behind 4 big ones (Sals Tip.it Zybez RuneHQ).--Degenret01 07:23, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Comment - according to the box that pops up for me about most common searches on Google when you type in RuneScape, it goes "RuneScape.com" "RuneScape wiki" "RuneScape cheats" "RuneScape private servers" "RuneScape quest help" "RuneScape hacks" "RuneScape autotyper" "RuneScape cursors" "RuneScape help". For RuneScape Quest help (where we want to be) we are not included at all, with Google giving the Runescape Quest Help Wiki with its 0 pages of content priority over us. Comment - Google can be a little annoying at times... Google gives different results in different PCs. I once searched for something in my main PC and found the item at rank #1, but when I went back to my laptop and searched it again, it went down a few ranks. Surprised, I went back to the PC and searched again, and lo and behold, still at rank #1. I think Google sometimes rank results based on our previous searches but I am not too sure about this.

Yes, Google does indeed rank results partly based on previous searches. This has even more effect when you're logged in to iGoogle, since they are certain it is the same person using it. As for getting "guide" on our pages, look runescape guide runescape quest helpat this code: <span style="visibility: hidden; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0;">runescape guide runescape quest help</span>. That code is included between the words "look" and "at". On 99% of browsers, its completely invisible, but Google will still count it as part of the page text. In response to the failed ad: ROFLMAO (the stuff that's good on sandwiches, but makes you laugh). I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 04:58, November 21, 2009 (UTC)

Can someone try this out to see if I'm right? Search in a PC you rarely use (i.e. work, school, etc.) and compare the Google rank in a PC you use often... do you get different ranks for the same item?   az talk   11:10, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

"runescape help" did not change from one old crappy slow work desktop pc to my pretty nice home desktop pc.--Degenret01 12:30, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Lol ad. On topic, I think it might be a changing from .ca to .com to .co.uk to whatever you use. Hello71 02:47, November 21, 2009 (UTC) oops

I think WoW Wiki did that. They purchased the domain "http://www.wowwiki.com/" But the thing is you have to purchase it. It costs money every month. If someone is willing to do that, though, it can be great help sometimes. — Enigma 14:35, November 23, 2009 (UTC)
They've always used that domain because they weren't apart of Wikia at first. Andrew talk 21:23, November 23, 2009 (UTC)

A different angle - This is based on what Alexa.com says about the wiki compared to other fansites using the peak amount of players each month. It uses all the default setting, which is described by Alexa as a "Percent of global Internet users who visit [the address]". RuneScape Wikia falls under the "Wikia" site, though Alexa also says that 3.1% of people on Wikia go to the RuneScape wikia so the percentage has been calculated for the RuneScape wiki. These figures are not trustworthy, however it is a good overview.

Fansite Peak percentage
RuneScape Wiki 0.013
Zybez 0.011
RuneHQ 0.015
Tip.it 0.014
Sal's Realm 0.009

Using Alexa, this places the wiki as the 3rd most visited RuneScape fansite. RuneHQ is very unstable however, with very large fluctuation meaning that for most of the time it seems that wiki is more visited, making us #2.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Evil yanks (talk) on 09:31, 24 November 2009.

Comment - I also went to the Dutch, French and German Googles (.nl, .fr, .de respectively) and this was the result:

Dutch: English RSW at 4th, Dutch at 11th O_o

French: French RSW at 14th, English at 15th

German: German RSW at 11th, English at 13th.

Zybez seems to be very popular in Germany... Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 17:47, November 24, 2009 (UTC)

Thus proving my theory that those over at Zybez are Nazis. But did anyone listen? No. http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3921/thehimmemote.pngGone. 14:48, November 26, 2009 (UTC)

i think that the titlebar of Runescape Wiki needs to be changed. Skills, quests, guides, and more may serve the majority of a player's needs, but more indirect focus should be placed on various other subjects of Runescape, such as minigames. --Fruit.Smoothie 01:23, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

Searching "RuneScape Minigames" got us at third. "RuneScape Distractions and Diversions" got us first. "RuneScape Treasure Trails" got us third. "RuneScape Achievement Diary" got us first. "RuneScape Bestiary" got us third. "RuneScape monsters" got us 14th, I think. We should try to improve our monster search. "RuneScape locations" got us third. "RuneScape items" got us at 53rd, but there were a bunch of RWT sites, so we might have been on the second page without them. So, two words we should try to improve on are "monsters" and "items". ~MuzTalk 02:19, November 28, 2009 (UTC)
Since the Wiki is editable by everybody, the quest guides are up the first. So my advice is: When a new quest is out, for example, Mournings End Part III, add it to MediaWiki:Pagetitle and MediaWiki:Pagetitle-view-mainpage. Éverybody is looking for a quest guide, and the RSW will land at the top. Mark (Talk) • (Contribs) 13:58, November 28, 2009 (UTC)

This one's nice. This is the Google Trends trend of searches for the RSW:

http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss8/Oli4burggraa/rswgoogletrends.png

A lot of spikes. Also, as can be seen on the page itself ([1]), a lot of people from New Zealand have searched for us. Strange. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 19:47, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

Even more strange: If you look up the trends for simply "Runescape", the largest searches are being done in Finnish, Lithuanian, and Dutch, with English coming in at #4. And the USA is listed as country #9, with the Netherland and Canada ranking well above the USA for searches. That really seems a bit odd to me. --Robert Horning 19:59, December 6, 2009 (UTC)
