'Insert country here' can you see anybody getting muted for this? I think not, while it IS releasing personal info about yourself.. Again, it's somehow tolerable. {{Signatures/LordNogiet}} 16:45, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Forums: Yew Grove > Request to ban topic on Clan Chat

I have a request to ban the following topic: Asking other RuneScape players for descriptions of their siblings. Earlier today, a wikian announced on the R S Wikia clan chat that his sister had turned 21 years old yesterday, and Jediadam4 began to ask questions about her appearence. This lead to more RuneScape players in the clan chat began to do the same. I do not tolerate this in any way, and this lead to a wikian asking if his sister buys him beer for him. I also believe that this topic should be banned from the Rules of RuneScape, and the rules clearly state:

{{cquote2|There are some unscrupulous people out there, so, to protect your account and your privacy, it makes sense not to give your details to anyone you don't know.

Contact information includes: full name, email address, instant messenger screen names, telephone numbers, your home/work address or age.

You may not ask someone else for personal details, and you must not tell people what your's or anyone else's are.

This is considered rule breaking:

  • To ask someone else, or provide to someone else, the following:
    • Full name
    • Email address
    • Instant messenger screen names
    • Contact details
    • Telephone number
    • Home/School address
    • Age
    • Bank details
  • To post anyone's personal contact details (including your own) on RuneScape's in-game chat or forums

This topic must surely be banned. My proposal is: Ban the topic, block the user who brought up the topic in the first place, and warn the users who were asking for personal details to not break the rules. --Youdead00 23:58, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It's already against the rules. Although age shouldn't be... 99.50.123.199 00:13, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Isn't this all covered under the part of the CC rules that says 'All in-game Rules of RuneScape apply.'? I think it should be common sense just as much as an official rule. Sure we shouldn't ask for address or something of that nature but I believe shouldn't jump on anyone simply stating their age or general questions about someone such as what country they live in, if Jagex rules were followed that closely nearly everyone would be muted at some time or another. And oh yeah 'Jediadam4 began to ask questions about her appearence' - I only said one thing and one thing only for a long time, I remember this quite well. All I said simply was 'is she hawt'. Oppose - "...block the user who brought up the topic in the first place..." Are you referring to the person whose sister turned 21 yesterday? Or Jediadam4? In both cases, all of the users who talked about the sister should be banned, because they did the same thing. Clarification: I do not think that they should be banned. This isn't the first time a wikian has stated his or her age. User:C Teng/sig 00:15, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Also "is she hawt" is not rule-breaking in any way. User:C Teng/sig 00:16, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - "My proposal is: ... block the user who brought up the topic in the first place..." - ...what...??? Block someone for saying their sister just had her birthday? Makes no sense to me. I think you're taking things to the extreme that don't need to be. Prayer Jedi Talk HS Log Tracker Summoning 00:21, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - All the important personal details are already banned by Jagex's rules. Appearance isn't listed by Jagex, either, so technically isn't reportable (probably debatable). I don't think we should ban it, it may lead to things like user1: "I have brown hair" user2: "warning", etc, which is completely OTT (extreme example but you see my point).

Banning the users involved without a warning sounds rather extreme to me. I don't think action should be taken... a warning is anything. Especially as I believe it was more joking than serious. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 00:31, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I wasn't there, but from the situation, no such personal details were given out. Her appearance was asked about, but that doesn't do much to reveal who such is. If any other personal details were given out, the report button could have been used. As for the comment of asking if she could buy someone beer, I agree that it was uncalled for, but it's used as a joke sometimes.

As for banning the people involved in asking about appearance, I don't want that. No such rule exists making it wrong to ask for what someone looks like. So, even if this is enacted, I don't want to see any penalty on those that committed them. ~MuzTalk 00:34, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - The user shouldn't even had mentioned her! I'm not requesting him banned, but simply reminded to never say that again. Also, another user asked if she can buy the user "booze". Youdead00 02:33, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Oh, please. I've seen you giving away all sorts of information you shouldn't have. Seriously, just get used to it. --

Oppose - Per all. Besides, it's not as though it's a really common topic. ~ Fire Surge icon Sentry Telos Talk  03:01, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose I would oppose banning this specifically, although all users should be aware that posting other people's personal information is against the rules. If I said something like "my sister's 21st birthday was yesterday", that would allow anyone else in the cc (i.e. virtual strangers) to work out her date of birth. Would you want your siblings to announce your DOB to the world? That said, a date by itself is not much good - it did not even match it up to her RuneScape user name, and that's if she even plays RuneScape. It probably is reportable, and everyone in the cc must be aware that Jagex's rules always apply in-game - if Jagex gets hold of in-game dialogue (which is easy) then any user must be prepared to be held responsible for anything they have said. Personally I am not that shy about stating my age (or even my brothers' ages) in the cc if people are interested. As for the beer topic, if someone who is of legal drinking age buys alcohol on behalf of someone who is not, then that may be illegal in their jurisdiction, but since RuneScape is international, don't assume that it's illegal for everyone. Jagex's rules (if anything) are stricter than they need to be, and err on the side of caution. In short, the current rules of the cc (which are that Jagex's rules always apply) encompass all the issues raised here. Correct me if I'm wrong.  :-) Leevclarke talk http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb290/leevclarke/RuneScape/Max%20Bulldog/Max_logo_mini.png http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb290/leevclarke/RuneScape/bulldog_puppy.png 03:48, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Giving away personal information is against RuneScape rules, if you have an issue then report the player in question. Banning topics is stupid, it merely makes the topic appear "cooler" because it is banned. Rather than banning topics, use your common sense for once. Oppose - Even though it is already against the rules in the official rules, sometimes things like these can be tolerated as it all depends on who you're talking to. I mean, I'm 18, I'm fully aware of what kind of people lurk the net.. if somebody would asks me, whom I partially know (such as through runescape), I'll decide what I tell her/him even though they are details regarding my life. It's that point of toleration that makes this rule less strict as it seems, and I'm sure loads of people will tell you their age on Runescape if they've known you for abit. It's more of a guideline (to protect younger players) than a law, or a strict rule. As for your request to ban topics on the CC, no', I disagree. Once you realize the 'don't release any details' rule is nothing but a guideline, and should only be taken seriously in extreme situations, such as somebody asking where you live, how old you are and you yourself don't trust it at all.. then you'd realize banning topics on the CC is too strict. {{}}Shiki | 直死の魔眼 12:22, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

"the 'don't release any details' rule is nothing but a guideline" No, it is a rule, one imposed by Jagex. We have no knowledge or control how seriously they will take a breach of their rules under any given circumstances. I have said my own age in the cc a few times, and whilst someone might report me for it, and Jagex may choose to issue a token punishment (though it has never happened to me yet), I am sure this would not be more than a 24 hour mute. However, if I should suffer worse than that, I really have only myself to blame. Everyone has to take the same responsibility for their own actions, and if you want to be on the safe side, stick to the rules!  :-) Leevclarke talk http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb290/leevclarke/RuneScape/Max%20Bulldog/Max_logo_mini.png http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb290/leevclarke/RuneScape/bulldog_puppy.png 15:59, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
