Hey guys.

I don't know how much attention you pay to our twitter or to me recently in the various chats we have (CC, IRC, S:C), but myself and Rich Farmbrough are heading to RuneFest this year for the wiki, using the two tickets Jagex gave to all fansites on the fansite forum. Aside from just letting everyone know we will be there and to feel free to come find and hang out with us, I do also have some points to consider.

  • All fansites get to use a stand in the community management area of the event for an hour during the day. Our slot is at 6pm (yes, I know its late, that's just what they gave us) - it is optional but I probably will go. Right now, all I have planned to do is to load the wiki's front page or something and answer questions/chat with anyone who comes along to say hi.
    • If there are any suggestions for anything we could do during the time then that will be great - bear in mind it must be feasible for me to do, and I only really have until Thursday to buy anything I need to buy (and I would need to be able to carry that around London).
    • If anyone else from the wiki is going then it would be great if you came along to this too - no obligation to stay the whole hour.
  • Jagex are hosting a session for all fansite staff at the event to ask any questions to community management and to suggest how CM can better help us. If you have any questions or suggestions for this, please let me know and I'll ask them.
    • I don't know if they'll let anyone else into this session - I imagine not.

I (and probably Rich) will be heading to the Night Before event, so feel free to come along to that with us too if you're around (there are no tickets and its free so you can pop along even if you're not going to RuneFest itself). On the day I'll be tweeting stuff on our twitter so by all means follow that for information or tweet at it (or to @Gaz_Lloyd) if you want to contact me during the day.

I think you should bring a hard copy of Special:Top/community with you, showcased on a gigantic 60" poster. MolMan 17:09, October 26, 2013 (UTC)

Not enough bots on there to be an accurate representation of the game sry Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 17:12, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
I'd say 6 (7 counting cook) is accurate enough, if you factor in OSRS.Adventurer's log Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon 17:28, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
8*. I'm a bot: look at the random letters and number in my name. Obviously I did that to make reporting me harder. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 19:01, October 26, 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the situation will be with monitors up there, but along with the main page it would be nice to showcase our Facebook and Twatter. Interesting/little known facts from our articles would be a good thing to display too. Ronan Talk 19:11, October 26, 2013 (UTC)

Maybe some of the scripts hidden away on articles like PHAS or the warbands timer? User:Cqm/Signature
Too mundane. Display something no other site has. DPL (and here comes my bias) is one of the coolest tools we have in our arsenal. We don't even make use of its full potential. I think rather than explaining a little clock, we should showcase one of our most powerful tools. I'm even willing to make a number of examples to show what we could do if we really wanted, and an explanation of how it's being practically used (like money making guide or GEMW pages) could impress a few faces. Show 'em what the RuneScape wiki is really made of. I also suggest showing User:The Mol Man/Fishing and having everyone at RuneFest vandalize it. MolMan 20:52, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
People are going to be there for RuneScape, not scripts. Lesser known facts and trivia that other sites don't offer will be a lot more interesting for bystanders than examples of PHAS or DPL and will do more to show off our actual content. Ronan Talk 21:00, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
So? We're given a short time slot to show them what makes us us. Obscure facts are cool at first, but they lose their appeal once they're out there. It may be an assembly for RuneScape, but once we're up there, all attention belongs to the Wiki, and we should make the best use of that that we can. I'm not saying they have to be shown a script or some parser or whatnot, but let's not waste our time with trivia. MolMan 21:13, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
Ah, I see -- User:The Mol Man/Fishing is making the best use of the attention given to us? People enjoy trivia. That's a fact (excuse the pun). I'm not quite as confident they'll enjoy an exhibition of DPL as much. Ronan Talk 21:46, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
That was a joke, shut up. I know full well that people enjoy trivia, but we can do much better than that; we should do much better than that. How would we get the trivia? Have pre-opened pages? Click Special:Random until we get something worth saying? I know we have some interesting trivia, but as an exhibit, it's really lame. FlayFlay, I know you know we can showcase something better. With that said... Gaz, you should stick around in Special:Chat and IRC, ask people if they'd like to talk to some of the people that make up wiki. Maybe if I'm on you can bring up RecentChanges showing 50 edits by me all with the edit summary "Hello, RuneFest2013!" MolMan 22:16, October 26, 2013 (UTC)
I'll jump into IRC and S:C definitely - maybe even the CC. Shame we can't use some DPL to pull trivia from pages very easily... Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 14:53, October 27, 2013 (UTC)
Errr, I can kinda do that... MolMan 15:03, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

It was more a suggestion of pointing out things that possibly aren't so well known to our users and aren't found anywhere else. User:Cqm/Signature

I'll be attending RuneFest also, so I'll probably pop by the community stand and whatever. --

I need to go to RuneFest one of these days... http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 16:29, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

I'd say to give away a few real Christmas crackers and show off some of our best pages, like comparing other fansite's quest guides (RuneHQs terrible guides, Sal's outdatedness, etc (word?)) to ours. Also, show examples of some of the best members of the community, and the contributions they've done. Cook and his combat simulator come to mind. Perhaps show live examples of the community interacting with each other.* Maybe even show statistics on how much pages are updated and how many people come to the website every month. That's all I can think of, for now.

(*)This is probably a terrible idea in every sense of the word. User:King kolton9/Signature 17:38, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

It isn't Christmas. Competitive comparisons would make us look pathetic and petty. Cook Me Plox sucks. Live examples of the community interacting would be be the nail in our coffin. Dishing out statistics are the surest way of losing people's attention.
Other than that, sounds good. Ronan Talk 18:25, October 27, 2013 (UTC)
Did I say it was Christmas? No. The partyhat is a famous item. Did I say showing the community live would probably end badly? Yes. Cook does not suck. Being completely negative is a better way of losing someone's attention. Comparing wouldn't make us look bad, it'd only affirm our quality. Other than that, spot on.User:King kolton9/Signature 18:30, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - As a final note on trivia, I should still have a list of some of our best tidbits. They received a very positive reception when we posted them over Twatter. We should definitely keep that option open. Ronan Talk 18:25, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

No trivia. Pls. ʞooɔ 06:50, October 28, 2013 (UTC)
You don't know the power of tidbits. Ronan Talk 12:24, October 28, 2013 (UTC)
Do you fully understand the situation? It's not like your twat where everyone will see a short little update post. People are going to be walking by and it's Gaz's responsibility to grab and keep their attention. If the best he can do is trivia, it's going to look weak and lame. If we are just going to share content that people have easy access to any time, we should at least make it some of our best and quality content. Money making guides come to mind. It'd certainly be more interesting to see Gaz using various methods we have for a short time live than it would for him to spout random trivia. Seriously... trivia? Are you even trying? MolMan 12:28, October 28, 2013 (UTC)

Do we have any idea yet what the other fansites will be doing? Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 18:48, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

Sites like RuneZone will be selling or giving apparel out during their time slot (there are a total of eight fansites going with the RSW). I know that RZ will be doing their radio straight from RuneFest, but if it's anything like the last RuneFest, I assume that RuneSlayer will be livestreaming with Qik again. Ryan PM 19:20, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - You should place emphasis on who really is the owner of the wiki rather than a specific user. When displaying the wiki, ensure that people know that Jagex staff members really love to use this wiki for all kinds of information (and that they use an ad-block on all their computers). Regarding the session, make sure to give some time towards swaying them to make accounts on the fansites that are in the session.

For example, they could have a Jagex Ltd. account with Wikia Inc. if it's vetted to be a Authenticated user. I know that at least one content developer has a personal account and we know what IP they use when they edit from their offices, but it would be nice to have an official account from them as Mod Hohbein did back in 2009 on Tip.it. Also, if possible, see if they will allow you to record the session or if they will place notes form the session up on Fansite Staff. That's all I can think of at this current moment. Ryan PM 19:20, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

For all intents and purposes, we have no owner; that's the point. MolMan 11:23, October 28, 2013 (UTC)
yeah but I have a runescape wiki tshirt Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 16:48, October 28, 2013 (UTC)
I'll mention making accounts on the fansites, that's a good point. I don't really have anything else at the moment to ask (well, maybe better clan tools but that's more a content development thing, not community management). Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 16:48, October 28, 2013 (UTC)

Make sure there are no injokes or stuff like that, we need to emphasise that we're open and that anyone can join us easily. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 23:00, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

So, apparently Mod John A, Mod Ollie and Mod Raven and probably others will be handing out signed concept art at RuneFest. If anyone happens to be lucky enough to obtain any, it would be great if you could upload it :). Adventurer's log Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon 10:12, November 2, 2013 (UTC)

That would violate RS:OWN, specically the part about signing your contributions. We can't talk Jagex into making an official Wikia account and then ban them for violating policy. That's not nice! MolMan 23:23, November 2, 2013 (UTC)
I'm sure we'd have a YG discussion about that XD http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 03:57, November 3, 2013 (UTC)

Post RuneFest Comments

First off, there were some problems with the fansite stuff at RuneFest - that is, it didn't happen. See the copy of my post to the thread in the fansite forum:

RuneFest was great, thanks for invite!

The only downsides I had was the the 'CM area' was nebulous and not at all labelled. I presumed it was the area near the gaming area with the sofas, but that was only because mods Jane and Slayer seemed to be hanging about in that area. I really have no idea if it actually was or not. Between that, the entry being delayed (I got in at 10:45) for whatever reason, and not being notified of the change of time for our (RuneScape Wiki's) time in the CM area (from 6-7 to 11-12) we basically had no one there.

I don't know if the proposed meeting with CM and fansites took place but due the mentioned lack of labelling both myself and Rich (searching separately) didn't manage to find it at all, which really sucks. If there was one and someone has a transcript/recording/summary to share, that would be grand.

Other than that we really enjoyed RuneFest, it was fantastic!

Cheers, Gaz

So yeah, it kinda went less well than I was hoping for us. Otherwise RF itself was great.

I did get some concept art: two copies of signed early version Bandos (which has already been uploaded); signed Moia (this one); signed butcher demon; a version of this; player-owned ports adventurers; rolled-up player-owned ports key NPCs; and rolled-up Armadyl. If any of these are needed I can scan them in. They would also make great competition prizes should we hold one and give physical prizes.

I'm sure a few of you saw the live tweets I put out - apologies for the few that came out badly. After that I proofread them before tweeting, but typing fast and accurately on an iPod Touch is hard. Should there be a next time I'll use my iPad or something. Other than the few bad ones it seems to have gotten a positive reception, which is really nice.

Toss any further comments below. Cheers. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 15:54, November 3, 2013 (UTC)

Scan all the things, they'll be better quality than what we have now. Adventurer's log Wahisietel (Talk) Quest map icon 18:30, November 3, 2013 (UTC)
Here you go, do with them as you want. I can't say they're amazing quality but hey. If you really want me to I can scan again in 600 or 1200 dpi rather than the 300 I used, but they would take days to upload - 300 took like 4 hours for them all. The unedited folder contains just that - the raw output from my scanner before I cropped, rotated and compressed them. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 20:20, November 4, 2013 (UTC)

So we didn't even get to participate in the fansite part of RuneFest? Gaz, your post was too nice. I like how, not only did no one reply to your post on the fansite forums, but the thread was unstickied and continues to fall down as new posts are made on other threads. User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 03:17, November 6, 2013 (UTC)

If that link was supposed to go to the thread, it didnt work. It just sent me to the main page of the forums. Anyways, i think its pretty trashy that they did that. Megadog14Talk 21:01, November 6, 2013 (UTC)

They're private forums the same as the FMod forums. If you're not allowed into them you can't see the threads and it defaults to the forum main page. As far as I remember there's 3 admins here that can see them, it would appear Gaz is a recent addition bringing that number up to 4. User:Cqm/Signature
I think it's more than that. At least five people have access to it (Cook, Gaz, Joey, Me, Urban). No recent additions in over a year. Ryan PM 23:43, November 6, 2013 (UTC)
Forum:Fansite Staff Representation was a little over a year ago and there were 3 when that was closed. We're back in the same position of not many people really knowing who has access to it. User:Cqm/Signature
Okay, here is the final list of the others that have or had access in late November/December 2012: A proofreader (not sure if she ever accepted invite), Coel, and Spine (not sure if he ever accepted invite). 6 out of 8 have posted on FS, but two never have. Now everyone knows all of those with access to Fansite Staff. Although, I think only two or three of us get emails from the Fansite Inbox. Do we need a project page for this? Ryan PM 11:23, November 7, 2013 (UTC)
Went ahead and made it as a subpage of RS:OFF. Didn't realize Proof left. Ryan PM 11:55, November 7, 2013 (UTC)

I've had some replies from other fansite staff (specifically RuneHQ, Lunagang and FrancoScape) on the thread and they agreed that they either didn't try to go or couldn't find the Fansite/CM meeting, and the meeting area was pretty bad. It doesn't seem to have happened. There have been no replies from Jagex, but I'm not surprised by that. Unless anyone has anything else to add, this thread should be closed in a few days. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 14:35, November 11, 2013 (UTC)

I've been away from the game and the wikia for a very, very long time - but I felt I had to respond when I read this. It is very good to hear that Jagex made this offer and that you were able to represent the wikia, Gaz and Rich. I hope it was an amazing time.
