Wikia has been working hard on making some amazing mobile experiences for folks. Since the Runescape community is so awesome, we selected the community for an exciting experiment. We recently launched a unique Game Guide app specifically for Runescape. You can download either the Android or the iOS version below!

If you've given the app a shot, we would love to hear your feedback. Let us know what you think, leave us a review, and feel free to share the app with other fans. Also, remember that admins can update the app easily via Special:GameGuidesContent. This is just an experiment, but we hope it's a great one, and we can't wait to here what you think!

Comment - Why is this different from a regular browser? Also i'd like to hear why you want permission to run at startup. Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 10:59, November 25, 2013 (UTC)

The idea is that instead of having to the load the whole interface, it's already on the device, so the only thing that has to be loaded is the content of articles and images. That's particularly relevant when clicking through multiple pages -- instead of having to reload everything, it just has to load the content of the new article and slip it in.
Of course, it wouldn't be too hard for Wikia to do that on the mobile web if they actually wanted to, and having apps gives them more excuses to neglect WikiaMobile.

Actually the normal game guides app, this app, the MyWikia app and the wikiamobile skin are all technically using the same skin. Excluding the whole interface outer part the inner part is pretty much exactly the same and suffers from all the drawbacks and bugs we fixed in standard wikiamobile. User:Cqm/Signature

This is really, really cool. I love the home page of the app. However, there are a few issues:

For pages with huge infoboxes (such as a monster with Template:Infobox monster), it tends to break the page if I'm viewing the page in portrait. It's better in landscape. It also breaks with pages with the switch infobox (such as Man) and to be honest, I'm not surprised. And finally, item pages that use a GEMW graph break (eg. Anti-dragon shield)

I love the searching interface. It looks like redirects work very, very well (typing Level 90 shields will result in Shadow Realm shield as the first result), and what I've noticed is that the app isn't slow (this could just be my internet though).

For suggestions, perhaps a random page button would be nice? And there's a previous-page button, but no button to go back forwards? Haidro (talk) 11:11, November 25, 2013 (UTC)

This is for iOS, by the way. Haidro (talk) 11:14, November 25, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - The application icon is grainy. I find myself trying to tap the "1 VIDEOS" thinking it'll take me to it and just takes me to the about page (File:24 June news video.ogg). I think more can be done with the left side menu than: Home, About, Send Feedback, More Games. How about adding the Exchange Namespace to that side menu or allowing it to be viewed with the app?

Better styling needs to be in place because I can see how poorly it handles transparent images and why something should be done to mitigate infobox tragedies. If possible, make it where we can provide our own MediaWiki:GameGuides.css page to make everything so much nicer. Ryan PM 17:58, November 25, 2013 (UTC)

Also, if there are links to those outside of the wiki (like to RuneScape.com), at least let them be clickable and send us to the default browser on the device. Another note, I'm noticing it takes awhile for the application to update itself on when a page is added or removed from a category as well as the application needs to ignore "The_" and use the next word to alphabetize itself when listing content.
I would also like to have a bit more leeway with this application (probably not going to happen) to decide what image appears when listing links to articles and, as before, the styling used. I'm not sure how the application would handle JavaScript unfortunately (which is required to run the Exchange NS properly/to see graph). Ryan PM 18:11, November 25, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - It appears we need to find a better way to fix all the problems we fixed with MediaWiki:Handheld.css. Switch infobox is something I hadn't noticed before (perhaps it might benefit from using verbatim'd pages instead of js), but we see the same issues with navboxes looking rather ugly (wikipedia seems to hide navboxes in their mobile skin, Athena), gecharts leftovers, the garbage from {{coins}} and so on. We seem to have catered a little too exclusively towards desktop browsers, or perhaps skins we have proper control over. User:Cqm/Signature

Comment - The app isn't new at all. In fact, nothing has changed. This has just separated RuneScape from the main app. Any page with GE data on it is still unreadable unless you enjoy scrolling for extended periods of time, and images with transparency still don't display correctly. Temujin 09:19, November 28, 2013 (UTC)

The search is very unlikely to be the same as the standard game guides app - it uses the new api that's still technically under development and was only deployed to test wikis in the past week or so. There may be other differences too, but I'd need to check for any specifics.
The GEData issue is common to Wikiamobile (the skin used for mobile browsing and for the apps). We just haven't found a way to fix it for the apps yet. User:Cqm/Signature

Quick Follow-Up: - Hey everyone! I just wanted to thank you all for your feedback. This experiment benefits from all your input, your thoughts here, and reviews on the marketplace! I may not respond to each of you, but I just want to be sure you know your feedback and marketplace reviews are immensely helpful. Jorge (profile)•(talk) 21:07, December 3, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Mira84 asked if we could find a bigger main image for Special:Promote, the current can be found at RuneScape:Promote. Something around 1000px he said would be ideal and as my upload log is a little lacking for a reason I thought I'd try appealing to the more proficient image takers we have around. Any thoughts? User:Cqm/Signature

Seems since I last messed with Promote, they've changed how they downsize everything when importing it to Wikia.com. 1920x1080 or 1280x720 would be our best shots at one. Ryan PM 19:24, December 7, 2013 (UTC)

Awaiting Response - I still want to hear why the android app requests permission to startup on boot Slayer helmet (c)Immo Voted Worst Wikian 2013 Slayer cape (t) 12:02, December 8, 2013 (UTC)

I forgot to send in the email regarding why it wanted that permission, hopefully I'll get some response in a couple of days. I'd be surprised if I got a proper answer though, it's something only the devs working on the app would know and anything information coming from devs always takes a while. I've seen it take 2-3 weeks before now, sometimes longer. User:Cqm/Signature

Closed - Discussion has died, and there doesn't seem like much else to say.
