I was initially opposed to this, since I believed that IP's had legitimate reasons to stop AWB accounts, and because I had only seen one isolated incident. Unfortunately, this problem was a bit more prevalent than I had initially thought. Just today, for example, another IP had come in and stopped a bunch of bots.

When an IP posts the stop message on a bot's talk page, even if it's reverted, the message will still trigger a "You have new messages" notification, and will force the AWB operator to log into the AWB account to read the message before AWB will work properly. Obviously, this is a huge inconvenience to any AWB operator.

Therefore, I propose that we amend RS:PROTECT to allow indefinite semiprotection for AWB talk pages. This will cut down on excessive and needless AWB spam. It should not adversely effect the AWB functionality that much, since IP's are highly unlikely to be the ones who have to stop AWB accounts anyways. Furthermore, since all AWB edits must be approved, it's unlikely any AWB account is going to go on any kind of rampage.

So, hopefully, this will solve many of the issues that AWB users have encountered. --LiquidTalk 18:03, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I see that Ajr has already indefinitely semiprotected all those pages. That means that this thread is just to rubber-stamp that action and write it into policy. --LiquidTalk 19:09, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Wha di mah bot du 2 u? Seriously, I didn't see why any IP would need to stop AWB and why it was done when I wasn't even editing (since the main function was to change my signature on 1 October and soon to clear out/change file links). Per Liquid. Ryan PM 05:36, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose Pretty sad everyone is going all out blitz on all IPs because of the negative work of a few. Those of us with "Hide bot edits" will miss bots screwing up. Now you take away the IPs ability to stop them, one of the few defenses we had. This proposal is very very bad.--

Degen. Think logically here. Think about out large userbase that constantly patrols RC. They will notice long before an IP does. Most IPs have no idea how to check contribs or page history. There is clear evidence that this is stopping the bots which are making correct edits. If an IP does notice a problem, it's all the more reason for them to make an account. User:Haloolah123/Sig 16:39, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
How many people do you think show bot edits on rc?bad_fetustalk 16:42, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
More people than IPs who probably don't know what RC even means. And it's not that, I know some people like myself look at the contribs of bots they know are running to make sure they aren't messing up. User:Haloolah123/Sig 16:56, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
I would be shocked if there's more than 5 people who always check bot edits as they check recent changes. Seriously, don't just be too lazy to log in. bad_fetustalk 17:00, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
I'd be shocked if any one of those 5 was an IP. User:Haloolah123/Sig 17:02, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
No, I'd also be shocked if any of those were an IP. However, there are way more IP editors than autoconfirmed users, one of 100 IP's checked bot edits, it'd be more than autoconfirmed users. I know for a fact that I edit as an IP when I'm at school. bad_fetustalk 17:08, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per Degen. Also, what happened to agf? bad_fetustalk 16:42, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

We AGF'd. Then people broke that trust. Saying AGF now is the equivalent of expecting a guy who got drunk and killed people to not do the same thing again. Granted the system isn't perfect, but it's less likely to be a problem this way. User:Haloolah123/Sig 16:55, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
The difference is that a drunk man is only one person whereas IP's certainly are not only one person. Also, if you are too lazy to just login and see your talk, I don't think you should have AWB access. bad_fetustalk 16:57, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Logging out and back in can be really annoying. Especially for people like me who forget their huge amounts of passwords for everything. I don't even use AWB anymore, but the point is, I think it's annoying. User:Haloolah123/Sig 16:59, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
Just take a note of your pass somewhere. bad_fetustalk 17:08, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Just saying... The only reason an AWB account would go wrong is for vandalism, which should be unlikely due to there being a level of trust in the users with it, or if the person is violating their agreement for the bot flag, and is letting it run automatically, and it is making some mistakes from the person not reviewing over every edit like they are supposed to.
