Forums: Yew Grove > Stop WC Docket No. 17-108
See also: Forum:Stop SOPA

A quick overview of net neutrality and how it's being threatened in the United States, with bits paraphrased from various sources (Ars, PBS):

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our right to communicate freely on the Internet. Title II of the US Communications Act of 1934 is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality, classifying internet service providers as utilities and prohibiting them from blocking or throttling content or websites you want to use. Trump's FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, wants to remove the Title II classification from ISPs (WC Docket No. 17-108) and let them self-regulate, allowing them to slow traffic for websites that do not pay for preferential treatment, censor people from speaking freely online, and otherwise interfere with the open internet.

12 July is the Internet-Wide Day of Action which major companies and organizations are participating in, including Mozilla, Amazon, Twitter, Netflix, and Github. I would like us to show support for net neutrality by:

  • Changing our logo to this version for 24 hours, and
  • Placing notices on the main page and in the rail asking readers to call or comment on the FCC proposal. As adding to the rail requires JavaScript, this thread will need to be closed earlier than usual to account for the time it takes Wikia to review our JS - preferably by this weekend.

This is not an issue that you can ignore just because you live outside the US; the precedent set here will have an impact on how other governments choose to handle net neutrality, just as SOPA/PIPA influenced the passage of similar laws in other countries, including the Sinde Law in Spain and the multinational Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

Support - Net neutrality is something we need to protect. This thread discusses the threats of it in the US, but it is also impacting people around the world too. In the UK, where I live, our prime minister is threatening to introduce extreme surveillance measures - which include weakening encryption of services (including end-to-end encryption), allowing spying of content on the internet, and regulating/censoring what we can actually view. And it was only the end of last year that the Investigatory Powers Act was introduced in the UK, which forced UK internet service providers to keep logs of our browsing histories that the Government can access. While not entirely in the same vain as net neutrality, it is a threat to our internet and ultimately will lead to losing our free access to it. There's already been an open letter & petition about it. If possible, can we add information about this to the rail too for the duration of this event? https://i.imgur.com/xHR7zpA.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/6encXAo.png 12:08, July 3, 2017 (UTC)

Support - The internet is one of the biggest tools fer alternate media coverage, and this stinks of an attempt to stop people from getting access to alternate news sources and forcibly influence political and public opinion through manipulation and censorship Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 16:15, July 3, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose - I might be in the minority here, but I'm totally sick of politics here and would rather we stick to providing a resource on a game. --LiquidTalk 19:51, July 3, 2017 (UTC)

There may not BE a resource or even a game for some people if net neturality dies, Liquid. Watch what you say. https://i.imgur.com/7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 20:50, July 3, 2017 (UTC)

Support logo, soft oppose 'uge notices - All for changing the logo for a day, and maybe a small link, but per some of the discussions on Forum:Stop SOPA, there is no need to go past it... we are a video game wiki, not a news aggregator, and we wouldn't want to turn people away from using our site because of a government's politics - https://i.imgur.com/58AXzQe.png(talk | contribs) 00:11, July 4, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose popups - Changing the logo and other minor stuff is fine, but per Liquid, we should not have intrusive pop-ups or whatever. The matter sounds important (admittedly I cannot be bothered reading up on it - but from what has been said here, I must say I am fine with tighter government control of privacy in favour of (inter)national security, if well regulated of course) and so I wouldn't mind giving it some attention. That said, however, we're the RuneScape Wiki (or Ryan's RuneWiki): a knowlege resource for a game and not a group of political activists. You may proceed to attack my opinion. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 06:15, July 4, 2017 (UTC)

I don't recall a proposal of popups but agree on the idea of being as non-intrusive as possible. Bren 13:45, July 4, 2017 (UTC)
Sorry, I misread "notices on the main page" as "pop-ups" (I don't know how). An inconspicuous main page notice would be ok. 18px-Avatar.png Fswe1 26px-Brassica_Prime_symbol.svg.png 14:41, July 4, 2017 (UTC)
