There is a solution to this, and I am working on it. The basic idea is to sort threads based on the date they were closed. This, however, requires the addition of two new parameters to Template:Forumheader: date (when it was closed) and user (who closed it). So, even if maintenance edits are made to the old threads, the old threads do not "re-surface".

When a thread is closed/archived, admins only need to do this:
<<Forumheader|Yew Grove|archive=true|date=~~~~~|user=CLOSED BY WHOM>>

For example:
<<Forumheader|Yew Grove|archive=true|date=08:00, December 31, 2010 (UTC)|user=Azliq7>>

For the old threads, I have compiled a list of dates and users. The addition of these two parameters can be done automatically. If there are no objections, I plan to use AzBot to add in these two parameters... maybe in a day week or two. User:Azliq7 02:55, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Sure why not. 222 talk 02:57, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Soupport - Though, if I may ask, why does it require the name of the closer? http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu33/Psycho_Robot/Sigs%20and%20Avatars/kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar 03:15, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Most likely to allow the closer's name to appear on the last author column instead of a bot or editor performing maintenance. (Support) - Riblet15 03:27, December 31, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks for clarifying. User:Azliq7 03:39, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Would it be possible to use ~~~~ in the name parameter as it is easier than typing your username. 222 talk 03:43, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Nope, you would have to type out your name. I haven't tried it out. I'm guessing the signature might appear in the third column. User:Azliq7 05:26, December 31, 2010 (UTC)
Isn't there some way to use the explode parser? I'm not sure how it works, but I believe tehre's a function where you do {{:explode|{{{3}}}|all kinds of crazy jibberish}} that returns certain segments of the string input for {{{3}}} as useable {{{n}}} or maybe {{#var:blahblah}}. http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu33/Psycho_Robot/Sigs%20and%20Avatars/kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar 08:59, December 31, 2010 (UTC)
I don't know if how that would work with DPL though. DPL grabs the value directly from the page by looking for text within the template. I will try it though. User:Azliq7 17:08, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I don't really see why this had to go here, since it's not discussing whether or not we should edit archives, but instead for a change on how things are sorted. User:TyA/sig 03:46, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

It's kinda related to the previous discussion, which I missed... see the archive above. User:Azliq7 05:26, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Neutral - I don't see what good organising by closing date does and an old thread 're-surfacing' does what bad? You really shouldn't rely on a table on Forum:Yew Grove. But if you're willing to do all this work for that table; by all means, go ahead. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 10:50, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Imagine this: some person starts editing after months of inactivity and would like to see what's going on with the wiki. The person wants to read the latest threads which have been recently archived... but can't find them because some bot just did some random maintenance task on very old threads.
What's the point of having a table if users cannot rely on that table to show them what they want? {{Rolling eyes}} User:Azliq7 17:08, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

Hiya. I'm a conservative (which amounts to being a Republican by some interpretations, though I don't consider myself this), and I'm the one who added the parameter in the first place. Your friend, User:Stelercus/Signature 00:52, January 2, 2011 (UTC)
I don't mind extra work when there is a purpose to it. I see a good purpose to this one. The archive parameter, on the other hand, seemed useless to me. --LiquidTalk 15:59, January 2, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Per everyone. Although while not entirely on subject, it would be nice to add categories for active discussions so that non-Yew Grove pages do not appear on a certain list/module of "Active discussions" for the YG. However this is barely related to this particular thread, anyway once this is through the appropriate rules regarding AWB/Bot editing should be changed if they have not already been done. Comment/Notice of intent/whatever it is called - The changes should be completed hopefully before the weekend is over. User:Azliq7 23:49, January 6, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - Task completed, with the exception of a few threads closed recently. User:Azliq7 10:03, January 7, 2011 (UTC)
