In the wiki, we use tradable in our infoboxes and articles. We even have an article called tradable. However, in-game, Jagex uses the spelling, "tradeable". If you use the Price-checker interface and try to check the price of an item that cannot be traded, you will get the message, "That item isn't tradeable". So, the question is whether this is big enough of an issue to warrant that every "tradable" in the wiki gets changed to "tradeable". It should be, considering we use the in-game spelling for our articles and that everything in the wiki should be as accurate as possible (including spelling). Does everyone else feel the same way? If so, then could someone create a bot to make these changes, as this is a pretty huge task. C.ChiamTalk 10:01, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

We can probably get um...that bot who "Removed the no longer used .......... street" something like that. If we can get a bot, I would Support it. Santa hat.png Powers38 おはようヾ(´・ω・`) 10:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Support - It might be too big of a job for a person, so I support Powers idea of using a bot to fix it. ~MuzTalk 11:47, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Based on the "database dump", we have approximately 4,500 mainspace articles with the "tradable" spelling compared to about 135 articles with the "tradeable" spelling.

I would prefer if we just updated the "Usage and spelling" section in our style guide to state that we use "tradeable" instead of "tradable". In my opinion, there is no pressing need to update 4,500 articles just to fix a minor spelling error, with or without a bot.

It would be sufficient to know the actual spelling, and correct the errors whenever we come across them.   az talk   14:23, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Support - With the same logic, is there any reason to not get it done with a bot? If someone can set it up with relative ease, then there's no reason to not allow the bot to get it done as opposed to having thousands of edits that aren't flagged as a bot to spam up the recent changes page... Quest MasterTexan H B K Quest Master 15:36, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Reply - We cannot let a bot to do the replacement automatically. It has to be done either semi-automatically (i.e. via the AWB) or manually. This was discussed earlier in RuneScape talk:Bots. The margin of error in spell-checking bots is significant, as it would not be able to distinguish actual text from links and image links.
Therefore, the user has to use the semi-automated AWB. But, if someone used the AWB to perform the replacements, they would appear in the Recent Changes page anyway.   az talk   16:37, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Support - Ugh it would take forever to do it manually, the pages that would have to be changed are in the thousands! Since this is the in-game spelling it should be changed though. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 16:52, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Comment/Oppose - I dont understand why people continue to bring issues related to our spelling and grammar vs Jagex spelling and grammar to the table. The entire point is to convey the meaning and give more information, whether tradeable or tradeable are used you know what we are trying to say and should not care otherwise. Similar spelling related issues have arisen in the past and were approved, but since the wiki is so large not much progress has been made. So go ahead and start making new articles with tradeable, but dont request that everyone go out of their way to fix something small like this. Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 18:10, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Tebuddy, I was simply checking to see if the community was okay with such a change or if this was something too minor. I did not request that everyone go out of their way to fix this. I asked if a bot could be used to fix this. That's pretty much about it. C.ChiamTalk 01:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Of course, and I am not ragging on you. My point is that apparently a bot cannot be used for this task and we will need to add it to the style guide and once once again enforce something really, really stupid. Do you know how many different spellings there are for british english and english spellings [1]? Are we going to add every single one of these to the style guide? Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 06:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
If you're against the wiki using British spelling over American spelling, don't bring it up here. Create another topic. C.ChiamTalk 06:21, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes but as you can see by going to the links that it appears on most of the pages as "Tradeable". The exceptions are the instances where it was typed outside of the infobox. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 02:14, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Concluding

I have changed every single tradable to tradeable. That was done to about 200 articles, where tradable was written outside of the item infobox. It think it's good that a bot wasn't used because I came across forum archives, user pages, talk pages etc.. where it's not allowed to edit anything. Now I'm 100% certain that there is no more then 5 times the word tradable anywhere on an article.
There is 1 thing to mention tho. There are about 4500 pages where tradable is still inside the code of the infobox. Not on the outside! Because there it just shows Tradeable = Yes/No there.. -(read slow from here)- If you really wanna change it inside the code of the template then we would have to edit the template and give it temporary 2 tables. 1 saying Tradeable and 1 saying Tradable (in the code). Because if you change the infobox code to say tradeable, then you would have to change 4500 pages in the second after that - otherwise they all show; Tradeable = unknown. So if we decide to edit the word tradable inside the code, while we have a double tradeable in the infobox temporary, I can make a bot account where I will make those changes on, like.. 500 a day maybe?
In short : All articles now show the correct spelling of tradeable. The code behind the item infobox template still uses old spelling, but template itself shows new spelling. This template is on ~4500 articles. Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 22:25, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Or, you could change the code inside the infobox to support both the old tradable and the new tradeable... fairly simple code (along the lines of whatever the code is for that section, replace it with {{{tradeable|{{{tradable|rest of code}}}}}} basically, though I haven't looked at the infobox's code. We could then update the code at our leisure, and change the infobox's code to only support tradeable once we're done. Weird gloop.png @Gaz#7521 22:33, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Good work, and now that the major problem is fixed we can make the change within the coding gradually. Zaros tally.PNGBladeQuick chat button.png# 00:46, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok Gaz, if that could work it's great! Someone (you?) who knows how to code this could have a look at this, this, this and this and edit it. :) Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 07:50, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Done. Those four templates now support both tradable and tradeable; the documentation has been updated to include this (except the infobar, it had none). Now to change all 4500 pages using tradable in the code! Weird gloop.png @Gaz#7521 17:27, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

A new bot

Thanks to Gaz we can now replace Tradable with Tradeable, inside the infobox template. As this has to be done to 4500 pages I'd like to make a new account which will be given bot rights by a 'crat. That way these 4500 edits don't show up in recent changes and neither are they being added to my editcount.. lol. The bot will be operated by me. To get bot rights, I have to ask the community for a consensus. So I'll explain how the bot will work;
I will be using AWB, just like I did to replace 200 other cases of tradable with tradeable. Those edits were semi-automatic, which means I watched every page that had to be edited. These 4500 pages will be done fully automatic. There is like no chance that it can go wrong, because I will let AWB search only those pages where the templates are on. And only let it replace |tradable with |tradeable. The "|" is only used in the template. Oh and a last thing, the bot will do 1 edit every 2 minutes. And I will monitor its edits often.
Now if we can agree on this bot, then we can get this spelling fix completely done. So ... comment :) Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 18:05, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Some articles use "| tradable" (with a space between the "|" and "tradable"), so account for that, too. Otherwise, support - images, links and whatnot will (or at least should) not be changed due to the "|". Good idea. Weird gloop.png @Gaz#7521 18:34, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Ye I was taking the space in account, but didn't wanna bore you all with that one. :P (I took capitalized T's in account too earlier) Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 18:42, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Just making sure. You really needn't bother with capilatilsed letters; template parameters are case-sensitive, so "Tradable" is not supported (nor "Tradeable"), only the lowercase versions. Great job anyway =D Weird gloop.png @Gaz#7521 20:02, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Comment - Just wondering, was "untradable" changed to "untradeable"/"non-tradable" changed to "non-tradeable"? It seems like you may have missed that out. C.ChiamTalk 10:12, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
