'''Comment/Suggestion''' To start, I do a lot of clues. So I wanted to help do all of the tt pictures. As I started to do this with this format: [[http://puu.sh/4S4nv]] HTML5(for better minimaps): [[http://puu.sh/4RZno]]. If someone will tell me how you want it, I'll be glad to do them all. {{Signatures/FerrelShadow}} 06:31, October 17, 2013 (UTC)

Forums: Yew Grove > Treasure trail scan pictures

Every picture on Treasure Trails/Guide/Scans is pretty much a constituent of this giant, disgusting, obsolete, inconsistent mess. I could probably list a few hundred more belittling adjectives, but as of late, I'm more intent on actually fixing this problem. Eventually (God knows when), I'll want to replace every image. I'll be having all the jpegs deleted, etc. etc. Everything will be nice and clean and consistent.

The problem, however, lies in the consistency. Before I even think about taking a hundred or so screenshots, I need to make sure we're all happy with how they'll look. What I need to know is how are we going to format the screenshots?

  • Should I be showing my inventory with the clue and a spade? Perhaps some food in there in case of a wizard? Maybe runes as well because everyone likes teleporting?
  • What should I wear? Armour for fighting? Maybe I go topless? Can I wear my Divination cape?????
  • I definitely want a minimap to help describe the location... Where should I put it? How big should it be? Can I wear my Divination cape?????
  • Should I make it look like I'm actively doing the clue scroll? i.e. Screenshot mid dig? Or should I just stand there? Your decision may or may not be dependent on whether or not I am topless.
  • Do we need the arrow? I don't have time to hunt for elite clue scrolls and hope for the best in getting every possible scan location. Do we really need the arrow showing? If so, can I just edit it in?

These are just the questions that I personally find to be the most important. I kind of want them answered badly. Answer them please, but don't think answering all these questions leaves this thread set. I need whatever input I can get for this little project. Leave screenshots of interface layouts or whatever. Anything that helps me understand how the community wants these formatted.

As well as me finally retaking all these pictures, I want whatever is decided (assuming we actually do decide something) to be explicated in our images and media policy.

Please note that as far as I can tell with how well I can predict the future, I'll be doing this no matter what. If there's no consensus, I'll just do it my way. That means this is pretty much your one chance to guide me on how you want them done. That's not to say I'll be taking awful pictures just to spite, it's just that if you don't like how they turn out, you're shit out of luck.

Discussion

If you can't already tell, I'm not doing this until after I've mastered the Divination skill. I'm 6 million experience to go at time of writing, so you have plenty of time to comment and such. MolMan 17:34, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

If anyone cares, my way is just me and the map. Nothing else. Decent sized minimap, arrows edited in after taken. MolMan 17:53, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

My opinion (for Coords, Scan and Compass clues, not just Scan)

  1. No inventory
  2. No arrow
  3. Base clothing
  4. Minimap done like in this image (only square instead of round)
  5. "Static" image, i.e. not digging, just standing on the spot

Just my £0.02 on the matter. Small recharge gem AnselaJonla Slayer-icon 17:48, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - I'd prefer the character to stand on the exact square it should be at, instead of the blinking arrow. Can't really think of any strict preferences other than that, except that including the inventory in every screenshot just seems pointless; there are other sections to describe a proper/efficient inventory setup. Comment - I agree with Ansela on everything. And the player should definitely be on the exact spot. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/Blaze_fire.pnghttp://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg244/blaze_fire12/RuneScape%20Wiki%20Images/12.png 18:38, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - I agree mostly with what's been said above, but I have to disagree about the minimap. When the minimap is simply cut out and left like that, it looks ugly. Plus, I think it'd be better to include more of the surrounding area as well as the compass. Suppa chuppa Talk 21:27, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

The minimap can get pretty damn big in RS3. I can set it up to be large enough to have a good map but without being too large as to obstruct the area. MolMan 21:29, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - This is also something I'm interested in, I've been doing alot of elites lately and I've been collecting images for scan clue locations. The way I've been doing them is:

  1. Using a load out with inventory etc. pushed to the sides to take the image so that it contains no interfaces.
  2. Wearing Basic clothing
  3. Having the arrow, with my character standing as close as possible to 1 square directly North of the arrow. If possible I make my character face standing South.
  4. Using the compass to make "North align" the view in the image.
  5. Being static, except when the location has aggressive monsters.

These are the standards I'd like to see for images. Also I think these things should be discussed:

  1. Having a standard size for scan images e.g. 850x600 or something. In my opinion the page would look much better if all the images were roughly the same size. Practically speaking some of the full-screen images in the boxes on the scan clue page are too hard to see and should be cropped.
  2. Standard size for the minimap and whether it should be square or round.
  3. Whether the images should have a compass next to the minimap.
  4. Redoing some of the base maps which give the summary of scan locations in an area e.g. Brimhaven, Chaos Tunnels, Taverley and Lumbridge Swamp Caves because their maps have changed. I don't mind trying to do this.
  5. Changing the symbols used on these maps so they all use the plain symbol used on the current Brimhaven locations map. I don't think it's necessary to "confirm" locations, I also think that the chance of a wizard appearing is random and not tied to a particular location so this information is unreliable.

I think the best way to update the scan images would be to create a project explaining the standards for scan clue images with some instructions on how to edit them. This project could be linked to the page for scan clues so people doing clues would notice it and be more likely to contribute. This could be better than Mol simply replacing all the existing images because:

  1. Several of the areas in game have been updated, meaning that the scan locations are likely to have been shifted compared to what they were before. For example the new Lumbridge Swamp Caves bares little resemblance to how it was laid out before.
  2. We can collect information about locations that are not listed at the moment. We could also gain images for locations that only have an imprecise written description at the moment. Magic logs detailIsobelJTalk page 21:34, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Sadly, community projects never work. You get a couple people doing stuff, but it's not going to get the job done. MolMan 22:38, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Basic clothes showing only, character static (if possible), the arrow has to be shown (not edited in), aligned north, no interfaces in view. I don't think that minimap sizes or image sizes are important, it can depend on the nature of the particular image. Overall, Isobel's reasoning seems sensible. 5-x Talk 22:00, September 11, 2013 (UTC)

Arrows are not happening. Sorry. MolMan 22:03, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Well, the point is, they are essential. Seeing the surroundings of the place to dig is good, but not fully helpful. This makes sweeping all clue locations at once impossible, I know, but it wasn't a bot-like task from the start, sorry. Others have been adding new screenshots with arrows already and I don't see a reason not do continue this. No support for arrow-less images. 5-x Talk 22:18, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
The arrow is moot when the player is standing on the exact square. And it's happening regardless. MolMan 22:20, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Regardless of what? I thought this was about discussing/shaping some rough scan screenshot guidelines and achieving consensus? And how are you going to capture the areas that have been changed without the arrow present? 5-x Talk 22:28, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Stand on the spot. Works well enough for coords where we don't have these fancy schmancy new-fangled "arrows" to use. Small recharge gem AnselaJonla Slayer-icon 22:30, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
I know a character standing on the spot hides the arrow. Here's the problem though, how can one tell the exact spot of an area that has been modified, in a scan clue, while not doing a treasure trail? 5-x Talk 22:36, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
If there's no graphical update, what reason is there to believe it was changed? MolMan 22:38, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
I'm not. I'm doing everything I can do accurately and setting a standard. I'm taking all these pictures regardless of the consensus here. The consensus here is just to help give the community a chance to decide how. If you want the arrows that badly, you can retake them later. MolMan 22:30, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
You asked if we really need the arrows showing, and I simply said yes. In my opinion, the entire task is not urgent enough to warrant skipping the arrows and capturing screenshots of all those locations just like that. Lack of time to hunt treasure trails for locations is irrelevant here, as nothing is compelling you to. A small group of editors actively doing elites would replace most, if not all, images fairly quickly. And the view with an arrow is what people actually doing those scans will see. 5-x Talk 22:47, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Then you can organize such a project on your own time. You are greatly exaggerating the importance of the arrow in a quality picture. It is truly minimal. If the arrow means that much to you, take it yourself. I'm not going to hold back on improving this page because you want some extra yellow. MolMan 22:48, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
Anyways, I should have made clear that I am doing arrows, but you objected to them being edited in. I have no idea why and argued against having arrows for that reason. Arrows are a consistent graphic and no one should have any problem with me adding them in myself. MolMan 23:57, September 11, 2013 (UTC)
This piece of information was not there at the time I made my above comments. I guess arrows edited in could be some form of a compromise. 5-x Talk 11:33, September 15, 2013 (UTC)
It kind of was... In my opening paragraphs... But whatever. I'm glad you agree on that compromise. MolMan 12:08, September 15, 2013 (UTC)

Comment I support having them edited in, I didn't realise you were suggesting this - I thought you meant no arrows at all. I have some screenshots of the arrow as it is now, as it has had a slight graphical update compared to the arrow in most of the current images. If you want I could send you these so you can use the "real" arrows to edit in. If I remember correctly the arrows simply appear over the top of everything else (both on the minimap and in the game) so putting an edited arrow over the top of an arrow-less screenshot, at the right height, would look exactly like an image taken while doing a clue. I know editing in arrows is more work but I think it would make the images look more realistic, and I would be happy to work on some of the images so you don't have to do them all yourself. Magic logs detailIsobelJTalk page 09:38, September 12, 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear on that. Yes, I'll be taking the pictures without the arrow in game and adding them in afterwards. I do believe the arrows I have saved to my computer are up to date, but if they're not, you can give me yours; that'd be great. You are correct that they appear over top of everything. Editing them in is not more work compared to getting them there "legitimately"; even compared to nothing, it's just a couple copy pastas. If you'd like to help that'd be wonderful, but I ask you wait until after this thread. Consensus and whatnot. It's good to hear someone's willing to help. I may be cynical in thinking a community project wouldn't get any attention, but I'm not wrong. MolMan 12:36, September 12, 2013 (UTC)
This is the arrow that I have that appears in game. This one is the one that appear on the minimap. In the screenshots I have it seems that the minimap arrow appears under the player's white square. In all the screenshots I have at the moment the white square is not on the exact spot of the scan location, so next time I do an elite I will get an image showing this. I'll be away the next 2/3 days but after that I should soon get a new image of the minimap arrow. I won't do anything to the location images until the thread is closed though Magic logs detailIsobelJTalk page 16:05, September 12, 2013 (UTC)
Another minimap arrow showing where the white square is when the player stands on the exact spot for the scan. Magic logs detailIsobelJTalk page 20:15, September 15, 2013 (UTC)
