For me, whenever I link to a userpage on the Special:WikiActivity or in the chat, and they don't have anything on it, for me, it says invalid webpage.1 But to most people, it just wants them to edit this. For an experienced user, this is normal. But to a brand-new user who happened to just stumble across this, might be confused and think its thier. So, they will start typing information about them and after saving it, both users will be confused.

Proposal- Turn the CreateWiki Script back on to create userpages for new users.

This is a very easy solution to solve the problem. Some of the older members of this wiki are probaly thinking, eww this makes it look ugly, and I understand, but you aren't going to the new members of our wiki to be a critic. You are going to thier userpage to Welcome them to our wiki. After time, they will edit it, after learning some tips and tricks, knowing where it properly goes.

1- This link shows the page that brings up when I go to a new user's page (or anypage infact)

Comment - Someone please link me to some documentation for this "CreateWiki script", mediawiki.org doesn't seem to have anything. Also, it's "their". 222 talk 12:05, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

I assume he means User:Wikia creating user (talk) pages for new users. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 13:45, September 12, 2011 (UTC)
No, I think he means when you click on a redlink of a userpage, in Oasis, it automatically brings you to an editing page where you can "create" the person's userpage. It does that for all redlinks, including userpages, which is stupid. I don't know what CreateWiki is but I assume it will automatically create new users' userpages so random people who click a redlink don't on create it on accident.

If that's indeed what it does, Support, but perhaps it should be explained what exactly it does to be certain. Hofmic Talk 16:57, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - You're not talking about this function are you? If so, it's not meant to run after initial installation of the wiki. The script you should be referring to is the MediaWiki messages that govern the Wikia bot. However, it has been decided in the past to never use this bot as being welcomed by a bot which signs the messages with the signature of the last logged in administrator is a no. It might be odd and I don't understand why your browser redirects you to that page, but it's fine as it is. No support here. Rather be welcomed by a user than a bot, whether or not it creates user pages. Ryan PM 17:31, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, regarding the user pages, I knew this can be activated but didn't think about it in my original writing. The only issue with this is if the user does not make an edit, the bot does not activate (you'll just get a edit page prompt if using RC). I'll go and change the default message for userpages now because we don't want people uploading personal images. So in hindsight, I do support this usage of the bot only. Ryan PM 17:08, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

EDIT- Sorry! I meant the Wikia Bot instead of Create Wiki Script. Sorry for the big mistake. Hair 21:27, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Strong Oppose - Per Ryan. Honestly with all the people we have, we welcome people so fast this thing would almost be useless. User:Haloolah123/Sig 21:36, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Okay, now that I understand the proposal. I still oppose. This does happen on certain wikis that I have visited, and I don't really find it to be that useful. People will make userpages if they want to, and there shouldn't really be any links there. User:Haloolah123/Sig 22:11, September 13, 2011 (UTC)
This is on the Profile, not the talk page. A member on the wiki could have made 20 edits and have a couple posts on the talk page but have no profle resulting in what happens above. Hair 21:39, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - But the wikia bot only does talk pages? Or am I mistaken? Hofmic Talk 21:51, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - We can set the Wikia bot to only create userpages for new users without welcoming them. This can be done by adding page-user to MediaWiki:Welcome-enabled. If we were to enable this, the userpage that would be made would look like MediaWiki:Welcome-user-page. User:TyA/sig 22:07, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Changed to oppose - Just don't see the merits of making a new page for every new user, particularly when most won't even use it. By the way, you have to do something about that browser of yours, Hair. IE is not a browser, it's a virus. Go grab firefox or chrome and solve that issue... And numerous others. Hofmic Talk 22:12, September 12, 2011 (UTC)

Does the same on Firefox and my "High-Tech" Virus detector found nothing.
I have Video now. Video of the Problem. Hair 22:19, September 12, 2011 (UTC)
That shouldn't happen. Special:Contact Wikia and link to that video to report the bug (or could be something wrong with your browser). Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 12:32, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support because it isn't needed, per above. Actually, seems fine to me reading below comments.

Comment - I suggest most of the people who have commented above re-read the proposal. He wants the bot to create a userpage for new users, not welcome them on their talk page. Suppa chuppa Talk 01:34, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Let's make 'em a basic userpage, maybe even include a link to our userpage creation guide page. If they don't make a userpage, we'll probably end up making them one with {{user}} if they comment on a page anyway. User:TyA/sig 02:19, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Support - The "they won't even use it" argument is useless as we create new talk pages for them already. I hate clicking a username and being asked to create their userpage. Half the time I post welcomes notices on them. -.- I see no harm here, just less frustration and perhaps a drive for people to edit their userpages. (:

  1. REDIRECT User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 02:24, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

In that case, I support the automatic creation of userpages but most certainly not automated user welcoming. However, before we enable the bot function, we need to agree on a template for the userpages, and none of that "My favourite pages" rubbish. Also, take into account the basic information displayed on the userpage header thingy to avoid redundancies. 222 talk 06:25, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Weak support - Per Brains.

Support - At first I was like "wtf r u doin" but then I realized. --クールネシトーク 19:54, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Oppose - Some people may not want to have a user page, or a user page such as the one automatically created, and it may be inconvenient for them to request it deleted. Judging the fact that most people don't opt to create a user page for themselves, I don't think it's necessary, and it's simply not good etiquette. Smithing (talk | contribs) 20:29, September 13, 2011 (UTC)

Um wut. They probably don't know they exist, and if they participate in discussions, they have to have one. I have absolutely no idea how etiquette comes into this.
  1. REDIRECT User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 01:37, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Wait what? You HAVE to have a userpage to participate in discussions? You most certainly do not. IPs can participate in discussions (and have in the past). User:Haloolah123/Sig 02:09, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
Whenever an IP signs it leaves a link to their contribs, while when a user signs it leaves a link to their userpage. Most of the time, we add {{User}} to their page because it creates a red link. User:TyA/sig 02:15, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
It's not required though, it's more of a recent thing that we've been doing. I don't really know why we do it. ɳex undique 02:18, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
It's not that recent, it was being done October of last year. :P User:TyA/sig 03:13, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
They could clog up the wanted pages, and giving them some sort of userpage would be better than having a bunch of redlinks, right?
  1. REDIRECT User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 06:17, September 14, 2011 (UTC)
User and user talk pages aren't on wanted pages. ʞooɔ 01:23, September 16, 2011 (UTC)
{{User}} is mostly for preventing the link to lead to the edit page, so that users can at least reach the user's talk and contribs page without having the annoyance of the edit page. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 09:31, September 16, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - What do you people think of this as a default userpage? Feel free to edit to as you see fit. User:TyA/sig 00:48, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

Lol, looks fine.
  1. REDIRECT User:Urbancowgurl777/Signature 01:37, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

Better than "My favourite pages are" Wink 222 talk 06:27, September 14, 2011 (UTC)

Request for closure. The discussion ended days ago, and there is pretty clear consensus on what action should be taken.

Closed - User:Wikia will now create userpages for all new users, using Zamorak's suggested default page. Hunter cape (t) Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask 07:38, September 23, 2011 (UTC)
