'''Oppose''' - I oppose any use of this feature and I think, like personal images, videos should be deleted upon upload. YT vids will more than suffice should a video be needed in an article. {{Signatures/Karlis}} 01:25, November 8, 2012 (UTC)

Revision as of 02:45, 8 November 2012

Forums: Yew Grove > Video

With the latest code release on Wikia, Special:Videos was added. I figured a good place to discuss the new addition could be here, and possibly modify our media policy towards videos (currently found at RS:IMAGES#Video) if we so choose.

What do we want to do about it? Do we want to look into the possibility of creating video guides for our YouTube channel, and then placing them on the wiki with this new tool? Use it for the BtS videos for the relevant pages? Or do we want to have it removed all together?

Edit - Wikia has stated they'll disable it if we decide to go that course.

No videos - tey'r bad. MolMan 21:15, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - If we had good guides made by competent video editor[s], it could be extremely useful. However, it would be a heck of a lot of work for those people, when they could just put it on their own YouTube channel and monetise it. If someone is willing to do it, and has at least some experience with making videos/game commentaries, possibly. Weird gloop @Gaz#7521 21:22, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - The vast majority of videos we might use in content-space (main, beta, update, etc.) can be found on youtube. I'm unaware of any other official recognised sources we might use that do otherwise. With this in mind, I'm happy with the current youtube extension we have enabled. With the current rise in BTS videos, especially those appearing in news posts, I'm willing to adapt the relevant policy to allow us to use official jagex made videos as sources as long as it's done with some degree of common sense. the only real benefit I can see is making the code on pages a little easier to follow, although I don't know what parameters these videos will/won't support aside from the obvious resizing.

Allowing 'personal' videos to be hosted here is likely to confuse users with regards to RS:NOT#HOST, regardless of whether the video is actually uploaded to the wiki or not.

Where all are videos currently being used in the main space? User:TyA/sig 21:37, November 7, 2012 (UTC)
might was a word I missed. User:TyA/sig 21:44, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose any use of this feature - To sum it up quickly regarding mainspace videos: Different qualities, would quickly be outdated, different opinions on which video editor is better, people would get lazy and stop making them, etc. Per every other video YG that's never passed. Regarding using them for things like the BTS, don't we already embed those? We just don't upload them. I don't see a reason to change this - making it a file would just be way too much work. I like the way you said it. You're my new reason. MolMan 23:32, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Fergie pretty much summed up everything I was going to say Template:Signatures/Ciphrius Kane 23:30, November 7, 2012 (UTC)

Questions:

a) Can the Video feature be used by all registered users, much like the File namespace?
b) How much easier is it to add a video from the RuneScape YouTube channel with Wikia Video than with the youtube tag?
c) Resource usage? Does a video that isn't playing only display a thumbnail of itself?
d) Would Wikia Video be useful to quickly embed short videos? I can foresee this being useful for tidbits of information that are more easily shown in a video, such as the optimal inventory position for a high-alch, or a collection of safespot positions, or a short video guide for a single quest puzzle, or I don't know what else (video makers please fill me in).

a) All logged in users can use it.
b) To add a video with Wikia Video, you'll need to go to Special:Video, click add new video, and then paste a link to the video. With the youtube tags, you can just use the video link.
c) An example of a video can be found at w:c:zammy:Video. It displays a thumbnail (plus a view counter). User:TyA/sig 00:19, November 8, 2012 (UTC)
a) Good.
b) Meh.
c) Thanks for the example. After viewing it, I went to its page again, refreshed it, cleared my cache, refreshed it again and it still said 0 views. I also don't see where to edit which YouTube video is targeted by a given File, which could be useful to change if a user directs a link to a video that gets taken down then uploaded to another account, or directs a link to a video that's an advertisement for a product or whatever (but under a legitimate name, like 'RuneScape LiveStream'). Are there any "video link revisions" for this Video stuff?  a proofreader ▸  00:44, November 8, 2012 (UTC)
To change the video, you'll need to go to the file page and click the upload new version button (same as for images). This will take you to a different special page where you paste the video link for the new version. The revisions can be reverted in the same way as images, but this turns it into just the image of the thumbnail, not a functioning video. w:c:zammy:File:The Tra La La Song Music Video - Full Version is an example file page where all of those have been done. Oppose - I can't support such a bad implementation. Maybe in the future.  a proofreader ▸  01:39, November 8, 2012 (UTC)
