I want to pull opinions on adding the additional asterisk to all links for the addition of a much needed Policies subnav containing in the order of: Copyrights, AGF, NPOV, UCS, UTP, IMAGE, and SOW like I have here. While this workaround has existed for months now, we haven't taken the liberty of it. Should we do so, I want to see what people think about it (and then implementing it soon).

As you can see by what WoWWiki has done with their notification, I'd like to replicate SiteWideMessages that Wikia uses occasionally to all users on the toolbar since we can't have access to that extension.

So what I am proposing is that we update MediaWiki:Communitymessages-notice-msg to have some more info on it below four dashes since normal wiki-syntax appears to work on it (presumably using a template so that people other than admins can edit it, but that's another issue) and adding the Policies subnav that no one will edit. I say that because it's been worked so it's easy on the eyes should it be implemented.

Support - Although I will see none of this (Monobook ftw) it will really help get messages out and improve navigation. Full Slayer Helmet! Evil1888 Talk A's L Dragon Platebody! 07:19, March 11, 2011 (UTC)

Support - But it should be sysop only. Other users can't edit the page that notifies everyone anyway, so it would be quite useless to enable this. It just makes abuse easier, as it's not checked often. It is a good idea to make those messages available though. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 22:19, March 11, 2011 (UTC)

Not what I meant. As done with the Community-corner, we could include a template like the ET uses that doesn't require administrators to edit. The only difference is an admin is needed to edit the Community-corner MW page to refresh the 48 hour window for the notification message to appear. Most things that seem needed to be done to the MediaWiki namespace are requests and not the actual person requesting it can do it themselves, otherwise they would edit said pages. Then how would the non-admin trigger the message to be shown for everyone? It would still require a request. Making it editable for everyone would just make vandalism and silly notices happen more often. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:55, March 12, 2011 (UTC)
Alright. But I'm still hard pressed for the custodians to be able to edit the interface (MediaWiki). Ryan PM 16:06, March 23, 2011 (UTC)

Support - It's another good way to get the information out to the masses. 222 talk 10:01, March 21, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Good comunication is the building block of any great community.

Oppose adding policies - They don't need a whole drop-down, if anything they could have 1 link under community but I don't really think that is even really needed. We don't want to put stuff in the sidebar (well topbar) that isn't necessary, which I believe policies aren't. If we can find another category that we need to have I would think about adding it, but policies just aren't one of the things we need there. When I originally saw it during the beta, I wanted it to have policies so that users couldn't play dumb on certain issues. The additional links adds relatively no load time. However, like I've said before, adding more than an additional header will cause an awful display like that at the Cannabis (Weed) Wiki or more than seven drop-downs (eight if you include the "Edit this menu" option). I agree any more than 1 more would be bad as it wouldn't fit well, but people that play dumb saying they haven't seen the policies would still say the same thing as they can just say "Oh, I didn't look at any of them" or something like that. Not many people play dumb anyway, not nearly enough to warrant it having it's own dropdown. The rc doesn't really need to be there as people can just add a link with the bottom bar if they are going to look at it, so we could just put a policies link in that spot. Notice of intent - If no further discussion takes place in the next three days, I will close this and implement the changes. Suppa chuppa Talk 06:27, April 2, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - Changes have been implemented. Suppa chuppa Talk 21:13, April 5, 2011 (UTC)

Postscript - The policies navbar was later removed after discussions with the nominator, supporters and closer. Please see this page for more information. ʞooɔ 04:14, April 6, 2011 (UTC)
