We made RuneScape:WikiCapes in 2010 as a way to recognize users for their contributions to the wiki. They were given out somewhat often for the first two years, but the only WikiCape I could find that was given after 2012 is this. Looking at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Wikicape, fewer than 50 have been given out in total. The capes themselves are also a little outdated, using the original skillcape design even though they've been updated ingame and master capes exist (though personally I do like the retro design). Not all the capes are applicable anymore - for example, the cape for welcoming new users is a little obsolete ever since we got User:Wikia to do it years ago. The cape for the wiki post is fully obsolete since we discontinued RS:WP over five years ago. We have a cape for a YouTube channel that was first taken down in 2009 and never fully restored. We haven't had a proposal for a new cape since 2011.
Basically, I'm making this thread to see what people want to do about this, and to draw attention to something that many editors don't know about or have forgotten. Do we want to just kill off the project and archive it? Will people start giving out capes again? At the very least, I propose removing the Wiki Post, YouTube, and welcome capes if people decide we want to keep this project. I don't particularly care what we do with this project as long as we decide to do something. --LiquidTalk 03:48, March 21, 2017 (UTC)
Comment - I'd say refurbish the system a bit to make it more notable, and e.g. create a template to nicely show off all "earnt" wikicapes in userspace. We could make some new ones, too, perhaps even relating to very specific projects (e.g. well done, you transl'd a lot of things; since "image maintenance" is rather broad). I see no reason to delete the obsolete ones; people that were given a cape for active contribution to RSWP should be able to keep it, right? There's also the slim chance that someone decides to read the Wiki Post a bit, notice a still active user who wrote a lot of stuff and give them a wiki cape.08:37, March 21, 2017 (UTC)
Comment - I feel like some of the purpose of wikicapes has been taken by the title (especially as it is arguably more desirable to the wider public), but I do kinda like the idea of handing out wikicapes more regularly for participation in projects, or other more specific capes. @Gaz#7521 14:28, March 21, 2017 (UTC)
- Comment - There's something to this idea, actually. Wikicapes could possibly be used as a little extra bonus/motivational milestone for project participation. Salix has 120 Sprucing, for example. -- 16:39, March 27, 2017 (UTC)
comment - helm you narb. You complained that forum titles were boring, twice! And then you didn't even name this forum "wiki capes 2 eletric boogaloo". How can we take those threads seriously when you don't even take your own advice on them? fetus is my son and I love him. 15:18, March 21, 2017 (UTC)
Keep it - Per Fswe1. Being a wikicape owner myself, I think the cape is a good recognition to the editor who has been actively contributing. The wikian title is similar but less specific on how the person contributes in the wiki. However I do agree the wikicapes are not well known nowadays and needs a bit promotion. --10:43, March 25, 2017 (UTC)
