Forums: Yew Grove > Wikifest Committee

I would like to propose a Wikifest Committee that is officially endowed with the power to organize and run Wikifests. Previous Wikifests were conducted with community discussion, but nowadays discussion takes too long to be practical. Thus, I'd like to put that power into the hands of the Wikifest Committee to avoid that issue. I would nominate Bonzi, Telos, and Steler to be on the committee, since they have experience running the fests. Any user that is on the Wikifest Committee will only stay there for the Wikifest immediately after his or her nomination. This is to allow many more people to have a chance to help run wikifests. To be on the committee for many wikifests, a user has to be nominated and accepted once for each wikifest. This is kind of like the republic system that many countries now have, where the people elect representatives to run the country, instead of doing it themselves. The process for selecting committee members should be completed for the next wikifest should be completed at the end of the current wikifest (so for example, the members for the Summer '10 fest should be selected at the end of the Spring '10 fest).

Anyone that wishes to nominate additional users or debate my proposal can do so below.

Support - As nom. --LiquidTalk 22:30, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

Complex Oppose - I am not completely sure how to word this, but the community should be in charge of the wikifest, thought there should be a few users who are running it to avoid anarchy. I don't want this to be a job people held forever, as everyone should have a chance to do something on the wiki such as this. That's what wiki communities are about, everyone working for a greater good. User:Stelercus/Signature 22:39, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

That's what I believe also. But, unfortunately the community discussion has gotten to be too long. I could modify this proposal so that the community only picks the users to organize each wikifest, and the users on the committee only hold their terms for one Wikifest, unless they are elected again. --LiquidTalk 22:44, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - As much as I appreciate your trust in my abilities, I must agree with Steler. Sorry.

Oppose - AEAE, and if the community has no say, then all editors are not equal. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv341/Rwojy/scoot4.pngscooties 23:21, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I agree with your concerns about AEAE, but my point is that the wikifest has grown so large now that it's impractical to continue the discussion form of organization that we have been using. I'm proposing an organization scheme along the lines of a republic. The committee represents the Congress that makes the decisions for the users, and the members of the Congress are up for re-election (or re-consensus, as I should say) every 3 months. --LiquidTalk 23:26, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

That is somewhat what we have been doing now. Choosing someone to do the fest and planning it. Instead, we can maybe just pick 2 or 3 people instead of 1 to lead it each fest. http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv341/Rwojy/scoot4.pngscooties 23:35, March 9, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose Committees are a great way to stop things from getting accomplished. Each fest we will see who wants to step and get involved and let them go about it, it will turn out fine. So we missed one fest, its not a big deal.--Degenret01 00:33, March 10, 2010 (UTC)

Neutral, leaning towards Support - I do see a problem with how the wikifests are organised now. With the sheer size of our community, it has in effect became sort of impractical to get everyone's opinion and have a long discussion where nothing gets included. Instead, there should be sort of "suggestions", where users can suggest an idea and the committee can consider it. These wikifests are not really "major changes to the wiki", and if someone doesn't like them, they don't have to come and can organise their own unofficial wikifest or suggest changes to the committee. Although, the opposition above has fairly good points, so I'll stay neutral for now. Chicken7 >talk 07:26, March 10, 2010 (UTC)

Slight Oppose - I like the idea, but I think it's better if we decide who's going to organise a Wikifest when we're discussing the Wikifest. Seems more practical to me. Ancient talisman Oil4 Talk 09:36, March 10, 2010 (UTC)

Oppose - Per all. It's kinda unfair.

Support, on a few conditions - For each 'Fest, a group of volunteers should get together to plan each individual Fest. --
