Introduction
This guide describes the most effective non-members methods to train the Woodcutting skill. Woodcutting is a gathering skill which, for free-to-play players, involves obtaining logs by chopping trees. Only 5 different types of tree are available to non-members: trees, oak trees, willow trees, maple trees and yew trees. Hatchets are tools required to chop trees. As players level up their Woodcutting skill they are able to gain experience and logs more frequently while woodcutting. They are also able to use hatchets which cut at a faster rate. The experience rate estimates in this guide assume that players are using the best possible hatchet available for their Woodcutting level and do not incorporate the use any experience boosting items or bonus experience.

In addition to Woodcutting level requirements, hatchets require certain Attack levels to be wielded. However, players are able to use a hatchet without equipping it, as hatchets held in the inventory or tool belt are automatically used to chop. To save inventory space, players are strongly advised to add their hatchet to their tool belt or equip it. Once a hatchet is added to the tool belt it cannot be removed, but players can add a higher level hatchet to their tool belt if the hatchet currently stored in the tool belt is inferior to the one being added. Players can add hatchets which they do not currently have a high enough Woodcutting level to use to their tool belt. If the hatchet stored in a player's tool belt requires a higher Woodcutting level to use than the player currently possesses, the hatchet will function as the best available hatchet at the player's current Woodcutting level.

Urns can be used to gain additional Woodcutting experience while training. When held in the inventory, urns are filled as the player cuts trees. Only gains in base experience count towards filling an urn. Full urns can be teleported away to receive additional experience, equivalent to 20% of the Woodcutting experience gained while filling the urn. Only one urn is filled at a time, though players may own up to a total of 10 full urns. If a player owns 10 full Woodcutting urns they must teleport at least 1 away before they can fill more urns. Urns are only tradeable in their (nr), non-runed, forms. In order to use a woodcutting urn the player must add an earth rune to it; this makes the urn untradeable.

At level 30 Woodcutting players should begin training on willow trees. For non-members willow trees continue to give more experience per hour than any other type of tree available up until level 99 Woodcutting. Around 24,000 experience can be gained per hour training at willow trees with level 30 Woodcutting and up to 57,000 experience per hour can be gained at level 99 Woodcutting. One of the best locations to cut willow trees is just south-west of the bank in Draynor Village, where a large group of willow trees can be found near the coast. Other locations include south of Port Sarim jail and just west of the lake south of Taverley. Players can gain more experience per hour by dropping the willow logs that they cut, rather than banking them. Players using the Evolution of Combat mode can drop willow logs as they are cut by adding willow logs to their action bar and then right-clicking this icon to drop the logs. As opposed to dropping logs directly from the inventory, dropping logs via the action bar does not interrupt woodcutting.

This article is about non-members methods of training the Woodcutting skill. For members' methods of training Woodcutting, see Pay-to-play Woodcutting training.

Introduction

This guide describes the most effective non-members methods to train the Woodcutting skill. The experience rate estimates in this guide do not incorporate the use any experience boosting items or bonus experience and assume that players are using the best possible hatchet available for their Woodcutting level. They can also cut more varieties of trees.

Useful equipment

Hatchets

Rune hatchet detail

Hatchets can be purchased from the Grand Exchange, obtained as monster drops or smithed with the required Smithing level. Hatchets up to Adamant may also be bought from Bob's Brilliant Axes in Lumbridge.

Nature's sentinel outfit

Nature's sentinel outfit equipped

Parts of the Sentinel outfits were obtainable from Treasure Hunter from 9 March to 13 March 2017. The oaken, willow and maple sentinel outfits consist of head slot, body slot, leg slot, hand slot and feet slot items. When wearing a complete version of any of these three outfits, players gain the following bonuses:

Players who own all pieces of the oaken, willow and maple sentinel outfits could combine these outfits' components to form the Nature's sentinel outfit. This outfit gives superior benefits to those given by the other sentinel outfits:

  • 7% increased success chance while Woodcutting (as opposed to 5% with the other sentinel outfits).
  • 20 daily teleports (as opposed to 5 with the other sentinel outfits):

    • Active Evil Tree

Methods

Summary

See here to calculate how many logs may be obtained during training.

Level Method Woodcutting experience per hour
1-15 Regular trees 9,700
15-30 Oak trees 19,000
30-99+ Willow trees 24,000-57,000

Levels 1-15: regular trees

Logs detail

At level 1 Woodcutting, players should begin training on regular trees. Between level 1 and 15 Woodcutting, players can gain experience at a rate equivalent to 9,700 experience per hour cutting regular trees. However, as only 2,416 experience is needed to achieve level 15 Woodcutting, a player starting with no Woodcutting experience can expect to achieve level 15 after around 15 minutes of training. Regular trees are located throughout RuneScape, but are the only type of tree that is cut down after only one log has been obtained from it. To avoid having to wait for trees to respawn while training, players should train in locations with many regular trees available (such as the dead tree forest south of Draynor Manor, the south-west of the Grand Exchange in Varrock, west of the Cooks' Guild).

Levels 15-30: oak trees

At level 15 Woodcutting players can start training on oak trees. Between level 15 and 30 Woodcutting, players can gain experience at a rate equivalent to 19,000 experience per hour at oak trees. As a total of around 10,950 Woodcutting experience is needed to advance from level 15 to 30 Woodcutting, players should be able to achieve these levels in approximately 35 minutes. Oak trees are found in many locations throughout RuneScape, but an example of a good place to cut them is just south-west of Varrock's west bank (south of the Grand Exchange and just east of Gertrude's house). Here players will find 3 oak trees located close to the bank, with a further 3 oak trees located south of the first group.

Levels 30-99+: willow trees

Willow logs detail

If the action bar is close to the bottom of the client's display area but not snapped to the bottom, then it is quite easy to drop willow logs by alternating right and left clicks without moving the mouse. As opposed to dropping logs directly from the inventory, dropping logs via the action bar does not interrupt woodcutting.
