The full crate is a quest item used in Dealing with Scabaras to make distressed bronze items for Simon Templeton. Players have two options for getting the distressed items, either making the oxidised equipment individually and putting it into the empty crate, or adding all the bronze items to the crate, making the full crate, adding one bucket of ugthanki dung, and then giving it to the archaeologists for three hours to stew. Then it can be taken to Simon Templeton to continue with the quest.
You can empty the full crate to get back the bronze equipment and an empty crate.
