A furnace is interactive scenery used in Smithing and Crafting. It can smelt various ores into metal bars, or craft gold bars into jewellery (e.g. rings, necklaces, bracelets, amulets) with the appropriate mould and Crafting level.
Players can also craft silver bars into holy symbols, tiaras, unholy symbols, or lightning rods depending on their Crafting level and the mould they have in their inventory. Players may also make molten glass by smelting soda ash and a bucket of sand.
Players with Level 43 Magic may choose to use Superheat Item instead of furnaces for smelting, earning both Magic and Smithing experience, although this will prove costly as it requires 1 nature rune and 4 fire runes per bar. Superheat Item does not work for jewellery or melting glass.
Locations[]
Excluding portable furnaces, the closest furnace to a bank is the one in Shilo Village, but this requires the Shilo Village quest to be completed. Following close behind are the Edgeville furnace (requiring the Varrock Easy Tasks to be finished, and you must be on a members server), the Neitiznot furnace (requiring The Fremennik Isles to be completed; the third closest to a bank), and the Port Phasmatys furnace (requiring Priest in Peril to be complete; the fourth closest to a bank). For free players or members who do not have any of these requirements, the Burthorpe furnace is the closest to a bank if accessed from its rear-facing side. You can use it anytime. Lumbridge also has the Combat Training chest next to the furnace and anvil, this is considered the best place to smith.
Free-to-play[]
Location | Squares to bank | Notes |
---|---|---|
Lumbridge |
Combat academy: 20 Second floor: 85 |
This furnace is located north of Lumbridge Castle. The closest is the bank chest at the Combat academy (20 squares) or the second floor of Lumbridge Castle (85 squares). It also has a smithing anvil by it. Members also have access to the Culinaromancer's chest after completing one subquest of Recipe for Disaster and to the Thieves' Guild after completing A Guild of Our Own caper (mini-quest). |
Burthorpe | Rear: 23 Front: 52 |
The furnace is just south of the bank (a one-click bank chest) and adjacent to anvils. This furnace is not the closest furnace to a bank on free worlds if accessed from its rear-facing side. This is the recommended furnace for players who cannot access the ones in Port Phasmatys, Neitiznot, or Edgeville. |
Al Kharid | 30 | This furnace is located just a little north of the bank. |
Falador | West bank: 39 East bank: 54 |
This furnace is located south of the centre of Falador. This is also a recommended furnace, though Al Kharid's furnace is slightly closer to a bank. It is also near an entrance to the Dwarven Mines. |
Wilderness (Level 28) | Please update. | Located in the Wilderness at level 28, it is only useful for the mines in the Wilderness, however players can also be killed by player killers while using this furnace. |
Daemonheim | N/A | Very close to an anvil, and the Smuggler. However, this furnace is only available while training dungeoneering. |

Location | Squares to bank | Notes |
---|---|---|
East Ardougne | North bank: 41 East bank: 64 |
This furnace is close to two banks. |
Burgh de Rott | 31 | This furnace is not a good place to smelt as there are no significant mining areas nearby (except maybe for the Abandoned Mine), and the bank is not accessible until you repair it as part of the In Aid of the Myreque quest. It is useful for smithing quest related items and ores received from Temple Trekking. |
Edgeville | 13 | This furnace is available after completing the Easy Varrock Tasks. In addition, wearing Varrock armour speeds smelting bars here, with a chance of smelting 2 bars at once for faster experience. Contrary to what some people think, the removal of the door does not mean that it can now be used without completing the tasks. |
Enakhra's Temple | Please update. | Requires Enakhra's Lament quest. Very far from a bank. Sometimes used for smelting gold from the nearby gold mine south-west of Nardah. |
Entrana | Please update. | This furnace is mainly used in Crafting to make glass as all the materials are on the island. The closest bank, Draynor is far away. However, there is a deposit box at Port Sarim docks near the ship to Entrana. Alternatively, players who meet the requirements can use the bank in their Player Owned Port. |
Dorgesh-Kaan | Please update. | Death to the Dorgeshuun is required to use the furnace in Dorgesh-Kaan. It can be found in Bartak's house in the southern part of the city. It is a unique open furnace, and can be used only for crafting glass and jewellery. An anvil can be found nearby, but both are somewhat far from the city's bank. |
Keldagrim | Please update. | The Giant Dwarf quest is needed to have been started or completed to enter the city. The furnace is actually the Blast Furnace minigame. Players with a smithing level lower than 60 must pay a fee of 2500 coins (1250 coins with a Ring of charos) to use it for 10 minutes. The upside is it uses half as much coal to make high level metal bars, and there is a nearby NPC selling ores. |
Meiyerditch | Please update. | The Legacy of Seergaze quest must be completed up to a certain point. Extremely far from both a bank or a mine, its use is mainly to create items for the quest. |
Neitiznot | 15 | The second closest furnace to a bank in all RuneScape. Starting The Fremennik Isles is required. Named clay forge. One-click bank chest. Next to an oven, which can be used to cook soda ash for glass-making. This furnace is superior to all other furnaces due to the player being able to see the furnace and the bank chest without the need to move the camera, even in fixed mode. |
Piscatoris Fishing Colony | 22 | Quite close to a bank. Swan Song is required. A very nice furnace because there's nobody usually smelting here, and you can take short breaks to fish. |
Port Phasmatys | 17 | This furnace is the third closest furnace, after Edgeville and Neitiznot, to a bank in RuneScape. It is the preferred option with no requirements. Wearing a Ghostspeak amulet speeds up banking but is not required. |
Prifddinas | 23 | Usable after completing the quest Plague's End. This furnace is located in the Trahaearn Clan area. A bank chest is nearby the Trahaearn herald. This furnace is the closest to an Anvil. |
Rellekka | Please update. | Usable after completing the quest The Fremennik Trials. A bank is a long walk away, but this furnace is the closest to an anvil in all of RuneScape for those who have not completed Plague's End. |
Shilo Village | 11 | The Shilo Village quest is required to enter the village. As of an update on 8 May 2017, the furnace no longer requires a 20 coins entrance fee to use. |
Tyras Camp | Please update. | Requires Regicide quest to be started. A really long walk away from a bank, unless the player uses charter ships to sail to a city with a nearby bank. However, players must pay 3200 coins per one-way trip (1600 after Cabin Fever or with Ring of Charos, or 800 with both). |
TzHaar City | Main Plaza Bank: 39 Fight Kiln Bank: 90 |
Is actually a lava forge but has the same options as furnace. Bank is near, close by the gold mine. |
Zanaris | 47 | The Lost City quest has to be completed to enter this city but it is close to a bank. |
Worker district | 20 | The Jack of Spades quest is required to access Menaphos. The furnace can be used upon completion of the quest, however players require tier 6 Worker district reputation in order to access the nearby bank. |
Ports district | 73 | The Jack of Spades quest is required to access Menaphos. The furnace can be used upon completion of the quest, however players require tier 6 Port district reputation in order to access the nearest bank. |
