Ghostly essence is a rare item dropped by various ghosts. Ghostly essence is used to create and recharge the attuned ectoplasmator: 100 essence used on an ectoplasmator to upgrade it (giving 1000 charges), and each essence restores 10 charges to the attuned ectoplasmator (to a maximum of 5009).
It could also very rarely be found in chests in the 2014 Hallowe'en event.
